Manix 2: Best Folder On Earth.

If you like it so much as a "hard use" knife then why buy three more 154CM versions and pine for a ZDP-189 sprint? It seems to me that the other Manix II sprint runs (CTS-XHP, S90V, S30V), which you state you won't buy, are more suitable for hard use than 154CM (which is still a fine steel in its own right).

Probably because the 154CM version is hollow ground with a thicker blade stock and the other's are full flat grind. I think.

I love my Manix 2. My knife cost me around $85 and I find it hard to decide to carry it or my $500 Strider SMF. The Manix 2 is just a great knife. I have the pink just because it was sprint. I just ordered the Orange and I can't wait for December. I really wish I had the blue but I don't see them for sale very often anymore. Can't go wrong with the Manix 2.

Plus what Rob and Monk said, I think ZZ is saying that 154CM is a good hard use steel. The ZDP or BG42 would be the only "non-hard use" version he would like.

Yep. Thanks, I am not the most eloquent of posters, especially when describing something I truly like, I guess its the undying kid in me around knives and fire.

To Nose, I don't know enough about the XHP to get really hot over it yet, I know 154cm and love it no complaints there, my thing about getting three is in case the M2 goes the way of the original and becomes an overnight 200 dollar knife.

So I would also like to see a sprint in M4 after doing some homework that steel is a beast, same with 3V.

BG42 is just my favorite steel, period. Hell I would plunk down hard earned cash on a BG 42 spork if it had a BOS treat.

My first post!!!
I've been a Spyderco fan for a long time! But I've been using Kershaw knives mostly and recently I lost my favorite EDC folder Kershaw Scallion. So I decided to buy myself a good knife, really good knife! After some research, I choose two knives Spyderco Manix 2 and Zero Tolerance ZT0350 and can not decide between them, but the knife store did not have ZT in stock so I bought Spyderco Manix 2! The absence of ZT was the sign!! I received my Manix 2 today, what can I say it is the best! The attention to every detail and level of craftsmanship is outstanding, blade is extremely sharp, new silky smooth locking system is really good and easy to use! So this is great knife for a good price! BEST FOLDER ON EARTH!

So far, I've got two Manix 2s. One satin / standard blade. the other is all-black. I'm carrying the all-black Manix 2 this weekend. Count me as one who likes the Manix 2 very much. Rock-solid, very robust knife. I've got 2 others on "pre-order." Don't know if I'll ever see them, though. :(

Don't wanna ruffle any members but it ain't the best for me. I however am on the opinion that the Manix 2 is getting there.

However I'm not sure it deserves the title of Manix, the old version is hella good and the new one is not at par I feel.

Mr Sal, have you ever considered using steel rods instead of ball bearings for this design? That way you'll get the contribution of lock capacity from the liners and backspacers instead of the current design which loads onto the backspacer. However maintaining the perpendicularness of the rod during lock operation needs some engineering.

Ti M4 Millie for the best folder in the world.

I don't know enough about the XHP to get really hot over it yet

There seem to be few tests of CTS-XHP, but D-2 tool steel is well known. In fact, Dozier has made D-2 legendary. CTS-XHP could be described as a powdered version of D-2, so it should be outstanding. I really like my Manix 2 in CTS-XHP.

Here is a link with comments from Bob Dozier and Mike Steward (at BRK&T) regarding CTS-XHP http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=723004
Powerfully comments from those two. Add in Spyderco's testing and Sal's observations and there should be little question as to the value of this steel.

Sounds either like the upcoming Sage 3 "bolt action" lock (bar inline with blade) or the Benchmade Axis lock (bar transverse with blade)? :D

I agree that the Manix 2 may not be "the best" but it is certainly (in my opinion) one of the best....imagine all the free cash we'd have if there ever were just one "best"? :D

I really think that the manix two deserves the toughest lock, its spyderco's "hard use folder" right. make it with the RIL. SAL BUILD IT IT WILL SELL. come on now, a ril manix with say natural G10 on one side and a FFG s30v blade. perfection

What makes you think the RIL is stronger than the BB lock? If you want absolute strength then the compression lock is the way to go although the BB lock is right there with it. Sal tests his locks to destruction a lot so I'm sure he is the most qualified to put a strong lock on the Manix 2 which he did.

I dont have the same faith in the BBL as you (I do own one). I do believe that the RIL is a stronger design. and simpler, which I beleive to be a good thing. and I also think that if Sal built a manix with a frame lock, it would sell out for a long time. But hey, we are all free to our own opinions and I am glad that you enjoy your BBL.

I won't call the Manix 2 the best folder by any stretch but it's a great folder. My only complaint about it is that it carries pretty wide, even for a Spyderco. I'd prefer a different lock but that won't stop me from owning a couple at any given time :)

To be totally hones JNewell I always felt that the Manix line deserved the same respect as the Millie. I always imagined if the Manix was upgraded, not to the Manix 2 we see today, but simply as the old Manix with a Tri-ad lock. Why Tri-ad some might say, I liked the old lockback like how Spyderco do so well and the Tri-ad is the next logical step for upgrading the lock.

The old Manix was intimidating (to me) but the current is... kinda pretty. I like BB locks don't get me wrong, the Poliwog's BB lock is my favorite, but the new tiny bb locks don't rock my boat as much.

I need to see this bolt action lock.... now something to interest me for a while, have not been intrigued in quite a while :)

My opinion is the lock strength is fine, I don't care if it failed in someones test designed to make locks fail. Its a 3.5" (or so) bladed folding knife, anyone batoning with that or cutting using the spine of the knife, has no business owning a nice knife, buy a double sided hatchet for that stuff.

My Manix 2 has cut everything I put in front of it and has yet to be sharpened, that's apples, boxes, mail, rope, plastic fencing and even the Turkey.

It still has no wobbles, no play, a solid lock up and fits my hands like Sal took a mold.

I'm not a big fan of the lock, but got this user for $35. And I'm on the list for an orange flavor. I'm beginning to prefer thinner EDC knives (Endura, etc.) but I can understand how folks prefer this one if they are looking for a more robust folder.

THAT would be a thing to behold: the old Manix, same blade (4mm) with Tri-Ad lock.
I like the M2, but I love the M1.

I would think that a compression lock would exceed either, but at some point (and I mean this good-naturedly) it just doesn't matter to 99.9% of us 99.9% of the time? :)

I've always preferred a big, sturdy folder. I've never been one to shell out a ton of money for an EDC folder either. I usually try to stay below the $75 range. However, I did spring for a Manix 2 last weekend and have been carrying it since. I love it! Glad I made the purchase! Is it the best folder? I don't know. But it's certainly the best I have right now!!
