I have to add this every time one of the Mantis militia pops up because it always gives me a good laugh.

You know, there was an app that came out when the iphone had just been released that cost something like $500. All it did was make a little ruby-like thing appear on the homescreen. Now the people who bought that app could say, "well if you didn't buy the app then you don't know that it's not well worth it," but I think anyone with half a brain can see the logical fallacy in that. Mantis knives are the same thing. Just because people weren't dumb enough to waste their money on them doesn't mean that their opinions aren't valid.

That sir, was painful to watch. I wonder if Peters really did the heat treat? I doubt it.

Mantis Knives. LOL

Defending Mantis knives. ROTFL

Mantis Knivs = Garbage

I don't need to waste any money on one to know that. About 10 seconds of handling one of these abortions at a gun/knife show made me realize that these are a gimmicky copy of what a knife should be. Mall Ninja material at best. Even Mall Ninjas should be ashamed.

440V? Riiiiiiight. Chinese 440V? Again, LOL. Chinese 440V is made out of melted down refrigerators and ovens.

Here watch this, I can make a list too. This is my version of CPM S125V...

C - 3.5%
Cr - 14%
Mo -2.3%
V -13%

This list makes it real right? I make this stuff in my garage.

This is frikkin' funny but it does happen often here. Noob comes into the forum asking for opinions. Opinions are posted. Noob gets butthurt. Thread goes to heck.

I've only seen it happen when they bought a junk knife and want to hear about what a great knife they bought. The fact that he "recently heard about their knives" but is so strongly defending a company that has such a bad reputation and everyone on this forum has such an overwhelming negative opinion about is very suspicious.

here's a video I know poor quality and it has Jared.......
BTW the cyclops is not any more of a fashion statement then a crkt minimalist.
Chipped Karambit, how many cuts through hemp rope that is how thick?
and what knife?

Let me guess you wanted a video with a time stamp and me in a lab coat??

sorry not hemp rope my bad. it was 3/16ths sisel. Either way that doesnt changed the fact that mantis failed.

argue all you want but the fact of the matter is that mantis does not use CPM440v. the knife i tested sounded like a tonka truck toy. rough tony or some shit.
I used my uncles spyderco gunting.
You can say they arent the same shape or size or grind or sharpness or whatever the hell you want to go for since your a mantis fanatic. But the difference was like a spork in a cut test against Elmax. And hell that tonka truck tony knife was better shaped for it but failed. I ended up having to put gloves on in order to continue test. That thing is torture to hold and use. Its torture to look at, its torture to anyone who buys it because they cant give it away. (we played baseball with it lol!!!!)

You asked. I provided evidence. You have your answer. delusion or not the facts have been presented

They dont use BG or 440v. Are you telling me that this
mantis_t_5.jpg

Is the same steel as an old sebenza? Same quality by ur arguements as a sebenza at 10% the cost? How come no one has stumbled on this gold mine? Wait, pyrite you say?!?!?!

btw, I make knives and I know how to list steels see!!!
C 1.9
Si 0.70
MN 0.30
Cr 20.00
Mo 1.
V 4.00
W 0.60

Wow my 5160 instantly became m390!! its a miracle!! lulz

And a side note for the OP

You should go by a death dealer 2000. look it up on youtube that seems up your ally. Its S110V

To be honest, it isn't as large as I'd thought, that's good. :D

The visible bladeplay in the video, however, illustrates precisely the quality of manufacture that I would have expected from a Mantis made knife, and that's bad. ;)

Little details like that are precisely why those of us who have never owned a Mantis can speak to the quality (or lack thereof) without having any need for personal experience. :)

OK I will not purchase a Mantis knife happy?
BTW the Death Dealer 2000 is pretty funny!
I'll just stick to Benchmade, Condor, Buck, Cold Steel, CRKT, and Aranyik.
Oh right no one owns a Aranyik knife......better not buy them then.
Also this thread has gone to hell!!!
one more thing the knife that chipped karambit posted is a monacoe with BG-42
and has no one commented on their lifetime warranty?

So I'm not subscribing or looking to get into the argument but I'll say I did pick up a mantis model last month. Their "coin". Overall if I had to do it again I wouldn't drop the $50 as it was one of those buys without to much research on the company. I looked at their other knives before purchasing the Coin and can certainly say its not a style for myself or others but there's of course a market for guys out there that would see their work as "cool" and not to costly.

I believe a lot of markets out there started this way and eventually improved their products over time.

As for the coin, it came razor sharp, it is small and easily deployed in a concealed manner. I picked it up as I can't afford to drop 200-300 on the Warren Thomas model which is what this is based on. At one point I started to become disgruntled w it and decided if I was going to carry it I'd need to test it.

I threw it with decent force against a concrete a concrete wall, stomped on it and cut through a few 1" ropes w it. Not w ease but it survived and for a small pocket coin it survived w no real damage. I plan on having some sort of finish put over it to remove the name and make it look more like a poker chip.

Again, after researching them a bit I likely wouldn't have bought it for $50 but overall I am happy w it. The rest of their stuff is just to far out there for me.

Why ask??? seriously why ask if you don't want to hear what people have to say??????
maybe they never own a mantis but there is guys here that have dealt with knives , touch , brought, traded thousands of them and can tell just by looking at one if it is good or bad.
buywhat ever the f... you want IS YOUR MONEY YOUR GOD GIVING LIFE, YOUR CHOICE , BE HAPPY , ENJOY BUT THIS WHAT YOU DOING NOW IS VERY CHILDISH .

what i'm doing is childish?
you guys have posted about 80, more then 80 posts about how bad mantis knives are, and only 10 of you own a mantis knife.
also rio says that they can tell quality by looking at it.......

How's this for someone who has ACTUAL experience with Mantis? I purchased many Mantis knives before I knew what a good knife was. I have to give Mantis some credit because without purchasing those knives I would have never (though maybe eventually) ended up at BladeForums. Upon arrival at BladeForums my eyes were opened up to the world of knives, so I made a few purchases. A Manix2 was purchased, a Leek was purchased and a Benchmade 755 was purchased. Those knives showed me that the Mantis knives I have are garbage and I've never looked back.

I still own these Mantis knives and will list them off for you, I can provide a picture if you really just don't believe me. Anyhow, I own the MT-9C Tough Tony, TA-2CM The Principal, MF-1B Gris, MF-4CM Chaos II, BK-1B Privateer, MU-6 Cyclops. Not one of these knives arrived sharp, I don't mean they didn't arrive hair whittling sharp, I mean I couldn't hack through a sheet of paper. None of them are very comfortable, ergonomics must not be a word Jared West is familiar with. The Cyclops doesn't even function like it should. If I wear it and give it a pull to engage the blade, the blade doesn't come out far enough to lock so I then have to use a second hand to lock the blade. The Tough Tony has a handle that is meant for a 2nd grader as far as size goes. I would never let a second grader handle it though because the lock fails just by putting pressure on the blade spine, not a spine whack, I mean when I push on the spine it disengages. It also hurts to hold for any length of time. The Gris could be an acceptable knife, I wrapped the handle with paracord and if it came with any kind of an edge I would probably use it, it's not that awful of a design. The only knife that I've purchased of Mantis that I actually thought was a cool new idea was the Principal. I don't think it was executed well but a fixed blade with the "tire tread" rubber insert actually provides a positive grip and I have not seen many if any fixed blades besides it that has grippy rubber as a handle insert/scale. It's pretty much G10 or micarta, and maybe theres a reason for that... The Chaos II is just a terribly designed hunk of metal, I really can't speak much about it because after I got it I regretted it and its never been out of the box since. The Privateer is another poor execution knife. It's extremely tiny, I though the choils were so it could fit like brass knuckles for punching or whatever, but the choils are so small that the only way I could use it is to have it up between my first two joints as opposed to knuckles which fit between your 2nd and 3rd joint. I think I briefly covered them all... now, can I get back to playing with my real knives?

For the record, Mantis will never again be purchased by me or anyone I know looking to buy knives.

Ok. Wow, this video was entertaining in all the wrong ways. is this guy wearing newscaster makeup?

when that lady said she bought that little novelty knife for her relatives so they could cut themselves lose from being entangled in shrubs and defend themselves, I assume from dangerous wildlife in the woods?? And then to build a shelter with it in the woods.........man o man. That little novelty knife wouldnt last a day in the swamp. It should be advertised as a dangerous letter opener.

Then watching her try to put it back...all I kept thinking was this lady is gonna slice her neck. Good thing they gave her an unsharpened prop. At least I hope they did?

I don't own any because I know garbage when I see it. I also don't order the set of 50 pocket knives that the home shopping network offers. I have had the opportunity to handle some mantis knives at various gun shows and flea markets, they are terrible quality and I would be afraid to put them to any actual use because I'm not going to use a knife that I'm almost positive will break and possibly cut/stab me. All the people here are doing is giving you their opinion on mantis knives which is what you asked for and if you were legitimately looking for feedback on a company that you've never heard of why are you so defensive about it?

To each his own. My Boss & I are the only guys that carry knives at work. Him an Old Timer and me usually a small Spydie, mini-grip or Copperlock. If I pulled out something like the knife below he'd likely think I've lost it.
I am sure someone has and would have no problem paying $160 for one but I don't care for it.

answer the question why? or proof that you here to troll

I have an Aranyik. The grind on it sucked and it wasn't very sharp when I got it. The handle was coated in what I think was hardware store polyurethane. However, I paid next to nothing for it(about 20 bucks). It cleaned up nice and gave me some more practice sharpening bigger stuff and making handles. The difference between Aranyik and Mantis, and why I don't have ill feelings towards Aranyik, is that Aranyik is honest about what they are making and the materials they use and it's intended purpose. Even with the lousy grind and amateur handle that thing hacked some vegetation without a problem which is what it was made for. I don't know if I'd recommend one to someone else over something from Condor or Tramontina, but I am happy enough with what I got.

P.S. I bet you really thought you were gonna stump somebody by name dropping Aranyik, though what agricultural blades and machetes have to do with Mantis ill-conceived folders I don't know.
