Mike Alsdorf Knives

2Dead and Big Dave you've got yourselves great looking knives, I love everything in them, another wonderful knives from Mike Alsdrof.
Mike

Thanks guys. I used to wish that Mike's Wharncliffe blade on the trapper was a full length blade. But, now I like how he designed it. By making it a little shorter it can recess further in the handle for a slimmer package. That makes sense and the blade is plenty long for everything I use it for.

Take care,
Dave

I'm still admiring these Wharncliffe trappers! The dye on the jigged bone is looking really good but so is the micarta. Does the black one have a different radius on the handle or is it the reflection in the handle material?

Congrats Dave. Mike makes one heck of a great knife and his new designs look fantastic. Looks like a great match to keep your two blade company. ;)

Does anyone know if Mike Alsdorf will be at the Blade Show ?

I just spoke with Mike but didn't ask about Blade. He's in the shop today. He usually responds to emails and PMs in the evening.

By the way, 2Dead and Big Dave should probably get commission for posting those photos! I hope you guys don't mind your knives having a fraternal twin.

Yea, I was wondering the same thing about the thickness of the black scales on the Wharncliffe trapper. They do look thicker in the photo. That's a real nice looking knife.

The red bone trapper I have is less than 9mm thick. The photo with the ruler is misleading. It looks like the right side of the bone trapper was ground down further than the other side. That's just an illusion due to the angle of the photo. Both the left and right side are ground the same.

When I spoke with Mike recently he said he doesn't do many shows.

Jake be sure to get a Sypderco Sharpmaker for your Alsdorf. I would also suggest getting the Ultra Fine triagles (sold seperately). That's what I use and they keep my Alsdorf's hair popping sharp with little effort since Mike's grind is set at a perfect 20 degrees.

For reprofiling on other knives I simply lay a DMT (diamond stone) on the Sharpmaker's stones and go through the motions to get a consistent angle. You have to be careful regarding safety, but once the edge is set it's easy to maintain with the Sharpmaker. I also have the Sharpmaker Diamond Triangle designed for the Sharpmaker. But, I prefer the DMT diamond stones since my DMT kit came with 4 stones from coarse to fine.

Later,
Dave

Sorry, I missed this part. I think it's slightly rounder than Dave's. It looks to be about 10mm at the center.

Not the best of pics but I hope you get the idea. The ruler is slightly raised due to the towel.

I bump into Mike occasionally at local shows and that was the case a couple of weeks ago. We were sitting around a table shooting the bull and Mike had out some of his wares. I noticed myself going back to this particular Slimline which was a bit odd for me as I am not a big fan personally of Shadow patterns. I left that day without the knife but it kept invading my thoughts over a couple of weeks. I figured it was sold but I called Mike to ask about it. He still had it so we met and now it is mine. Sorry about the pictures Mike. Black never works out for me in pictures. A sweet little lightweight. Nice length with slimness. F&F is as good as it gets.

Well, Brad, strangely enough I kind of like that one. ;)

:p

Great lookin knife there Brad and I agree with Trand those liners really set the knife off and make it special. I think you made the right call going back for that one

Mike's knives are incredible. I carry my doctor's knife to the office almost every day.

I would love to see Mike start making some larger knives.

This is still one of my favorite Alsdorf knives so far. It's just got the right amount of everything to me. About the only thing that would improve it in my eyes would be a nice long pull instead of the common pull.
