Mirror edges

I finish on the .5 micron lapping sheets for the EPA, but I use them over a piece of leather set on top of a benchstone or thick book. I find that, properly done, the mirror begins to appear once I get to 3-5 micron sheets. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the good info so far! I just ordered 10 new belts from econabrasives 600-12,000:eek:! I just gotta see how they work! :D

I use paper sharpening wheels, mounted on an 8'' v/s grinder. No problem with a mirror edge after a little practice..... I've thought about getting an Edge Pro, but it looks like too much work!

Off topic: How sharp is the blade from theapostlep? Hair whittling, tree topping or something in between. Maybe three finger sticky like Murray Carter?

I get decent results from the paper wheels too. It wasn't until I had an edge from theapostlep that I saw a whole new edge finish. This edge is just like looking in the mirror.

This is right on the money! You've got to clean up the last grit with the next grit over the full surface of the edge. If you get too far up the grit scale without doing so, you'll never get those scratches out. Great advice for david, Sadden!

I still struggle with this. How do you know when to move to the next grit without using a microscope?

Uniform grind. Make sure the entire edge has the exact same scratch pattern. Then move on. I'm learning too!

I get very close to a full mirror polish using (believe it or not) a belt turned inside out with a little bit of green compound.

The belt is very used (don't want to grind my platen since I use it with wood/micarta) and it's cloth. I imagine that the cloth is a big factor.

for mirror edge, on my grinder abitually I use leather belt with green paste (cromo). In this way you can remove easily signs of sharpening belt (400 grit).

heres a few i have pictures of. i use dmt and shapton as well as some other stuff. but the scandi grind was with wet dry sandpaper and green chrome

If I need to reprofile, I use the WE until about 400-600 grit. After that, the paper wheel strop will get me a mirror edge in literally less than 2 minutes.

Theres some new formulations of CBN designed specifically for linen on a belt sander. One bottle will outlast any sandpaper belt. And linen itself lasts a long time.

One bottle of CBN will do alot of knives. Alot alot.
