Mnandi: My latest Obsession

sorry to say I have a china knockoff of this knife and sure is no close in fit and finish to the real one but my pockets are empty of cash :-( and I can affort a RELA one.
perhaps some day........

Why would you do such a thing? How could you possibly support the dark side? This is just terrible news and makes me sad.

Lone_wolfe, you cease to amaze me with your awesomeness! Thanks for posting the pic up here until i could! Such a beautiful knife you sold me! I do love yours too! Exclusive left and right hand only owned by you, thats awesome!!

You're going to have to work hard to break that clip, and I believe it's covered under warranty. Here's a pic to hold you until you get your photobucket account up and post your own pics. I'm so glad you're happy with your little treasure! :)

Some time ago (when I was into watches), I started a thread for the sole purpose of cataloging the travels of a "pass around" watch. I thought it would be cool to do the same with a Mnandi and the active participants on this thread. We would take possession of the knife, hold onto it for a period of time (to be decided by the group), and take a photo of the knife with something specific to the area we live. ie; landmark, road sign, famous eatery...you get the point. It worked out well, and was a great deal of fun with the watch....so I thought it would be equally amusing with a knife. Let me know if the group is on board, and I'll work on supplying the Mnandi to use. It'll require the integrity of the participants for this to work. Don't want a regular participant going MIA over a Mnandi. It won't be a Mammoth Mnandi (that temptation may be too great :)), and the participants need to have a 100% positive sales feedback on this forum unless one of us "heavy hitters" can vouch for the person. I vouch for Jeff (NYCMD).

Let me know what you think and I'll work on supplying the Mnandi.

I think I remember the watch across the world thread some years back on WUS. That was an awesome thread and fun to follow. I think it would be a cool idea to try with a Mnandi...

And by thme way, how could you not be into watches anymore??? I just received a brand new Omega Planet Ocean 8500 a week ago  Don't think I will ever loose interest in watches, although I have slowed down. I know what I like now so I buy slowly and, keep most everything...

I imported / distributed for a Swiss company for 8 years, and have been restoring vintage Accutron 214s (Spaceview) for nearly 10 years. To me, watches = work. I can't wear a watch now, hate anything being on my wrist. Owned just about every Swiss watch made.....name it, I owned it. I miss only a couple, but have gotten over it. Became disenchanted with watches when I learned about the back end (dirty side) of manufacturing, distribution, and sales. Watches at least have some substance to justify value. Unlike the worthless, most over valued (perceived value) rock known as the "diamond".

The thread was started on TZ. Someone at WUS snatched up the idea and did one there.

This sounds an awful lot like a little watch known as Flat Stanley.

Sounds like a great idea; I'm in.

My first Mnandi arrived, just tried to post to Flikr and link (and my first attempt to post a pic)
Did not work :(

Anyway, very impressed, already want another one!

Pull the photo up in Flickr...find the "share" drop down. Then select the BBCode and size you want to use. Right click and save the text, then paste in the forum post. Should work....give it a try.

I just subscribed to bladeforums (after my last post) figgured it was the right thing to do and would allow for easier postings.

CLICK IT!

Now, how to post these full size as opposed to thumbs?

I'm in if this happens.

Okay ..... not to move this thread in a different direction, however I LOVE the Mnandi ...... BUT I hate when this happens. I am sure we all have favorite dealers who just seem to get the perfect stock in. How they do it is a mystery .... but therein lies the beauty. However, there are some dealers I am really starting to have a problem with. Saw a Mnandi yesterday that I fell in love with. Here are a couple pics from the site (I have removed the dealer's logo .... because I can never remember the rules and don't want to offend anyone):

I remember when I bought another Mnandi from this dealer. Turned out that, while the Mnandi that arrived did have the correct blade steel (Spirograph Damascus) in that case and correct inlay (Bocote), the grain and coloring of the Bocote was TOTALLY different than the knife depicted. That did work out okay in the end, since I really liked the Damascus much better than in the one pictured on the site. Now, back to the Mnandi I saw yesterday. Thought to myself, I better send an email .... just in case! You guessed it .... response was that the knife they had did have a Ladder Damascus blade, but the grain and coloring of the inlay (again Bocote) was totally different .... more the typical straight line grain). Talk about a letdown. Anyway, not sure now much future business they will be getting from me if I have to keep sending emails to make sure of exactly what I am buying. On a side note ...... if anyone does own this beauty pictured above ..... keep me in mind if you want to set her free!!

I'm totally in for the Mnandi round the country (or whatever we wind up calling this).
One thing tho....I want a face to face handoff with you.
We can each take pics together with the Mnandi, perhaps over adult beverages?

Beautiful matched pairs!
They way you have them positioned reminds me of paired sabers or dueling pistols.
Lovely grain, I'm really digging how well matched they are.
I may have missed it, do the birth dates line up? Are they definitely from the same batch of Rosewood?

As some of you know, my main collecting love is Sebs with unique graphics. I really like having something beautiful that no one else has. Just a neat feeling. I can look at some of these Mammoth barks and know there's not another one just like it anywhere. I've done the same thing here, but in a different way. I believe I have the honor of being the custodian of the only matched left-right pair of Honduran Rosewood Mnandis in existance. So let me share that neat feeling with you here...

Thanks to Garrett Weidman and Ganagati for making this possible for me.

Thank you! I'm going to have more fun with pics later, especially after my Walnut lefty gets back from the mothership. Then I'll have 2 left-right pairs to play with. As to matching birthdays, not as close as I was thinking they were, by months. They look like the same lot of Rosewood, but may not be.

They did two runs that I know of - and considering the fact that one card is hand written and the other isn't...and the large discrepancy in dates, they are likely from different runs. That's not to say, though, that they aren't from the same batch.
