Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

Just finishing a rehandle with some osage from my back yard. Couple pieces of raw wood are the same material.

Fantastic, is that some manner of Rag Micarta? Really suits the frame. Is it your knife or a client's?

Double Bomb shield too  Quite a job inletting that...

that's different, I like it, nice work Jeff J jsdistin what's it called

Thanks guys! It’s some vintage rag micarta, it’s not mine unfortunately, the bomb shield is leftover from a recover of a forum knife I did just prior, I had to do the routing freehand on it which isn’t my favorite thing to do but usually turns out decent.

Yea, that’s going to make someone pretty happy!

Apparently snow + wood + knives = rehandle projects. Here is my last one, Imperial Barlow in osage. Most of the brown is actually burn marks from my saw. Also lengthened the nail nick on the pen. It was a nailbreaker, so moving the pull to the end and thinning the backspring have made it very usable.

You must be right.... this isn't a re-handle, just a re-do of a handle. My 23 CK in mesquite was always too dark for my tastes, and the finish looked too glossy... almost plastic. I think GEC might have "stabilized" mine a bit, because of a couple of cracks in the handles. I decided to take matters into my own hands, and sanded them down to as close as I could get to what I think is the original color of the mesquite. I then put a couple of light coats of Tru Oil on them. After the second coat dried, I dusted it off with some scotchbrite, and this is the result. I like it quite a bit better, and I'm curious to see how it ages. Two coats might not be enough, but I can always do it again... :D

Hey guys
Nice, is it white bone, ivory, something else?
The handle material is Super Tusk, a synthetic ivory replacement by Elforyn (same folks who make Juma). Back in December they did a contest on Instagram where they supplied makers with materials and the winner was whoevers project got the most votes. The point of all that is that customs thought the Super Tusk was real ivory and took too long getting it to me for me to be in the contest!

It does look pretty real.

Last week I carried my Svord Peasent that I smoothed out & changed the blade shape on a few years ago, now I know Peasents are a bit "Marmite" folks seem to love them or hate them, as they come from Svord I probably hate them! But they are a great basis for modding & making better, & great steel.
I had another one (bought to modify after the first & never got round to doing anything with it) so started on it, finished it yesterday & the results are below.

The first Svord slipjoint?
Mostly happy how it turned out, the snap & feel of opening is good with medium pull.
Thin brass liners & brass fob/lanyard hole. The back spring isn't as good as it could have been with a small flat spot (last image), when making it I didn't measure anything just made everything to fit everything else, the spring shape is a bit of guesswork making it without tension then it changing shape when tentioned, I could grind the spine down a tad to get a perfect shape but don't want to change the spring tension so will leave it as it's not so obvious in real life. The spring sits a tiny bit higher when open, again it looks worse in the second image partly because the wood handle is rounded & again not so noticeable in real life, mental note " must try harder"..............
Hope you like it.

Been years since I've tinkered with folders, but did a few things this last week.

First up, I rounded off the uncomfortable bits on the pommel of my Opinel, and recoated in polyurethane. :)

Might resand it, stain it and seal again. Or might not. ;)

Then, I kinda unmodified the main blade in this Rough Rider doctors knife. When I got it was the earlier time in my life when I was experimenting with using wharncliffe blades... (later stopping, then going back again after several years)

I'd modified both pen blades in this to wharnies.

Which is almost as pointless as two pen blades... not sure why I did both. I'd also ground both to convex no secondary bevel edges, something else I was using a lot then. (This was around 2006, 2007 ish...)

I just made the main blade back into a pen, and dropped the kick to get the tip below the liners. The convex I left. Dont use that much anymore, but can't see a problem with it either.

Also Finally did something with the blades in this Schmachtenberg Bros. sleeveboard I got last summer.

Before;

20200629_222836.jpg

Squared the ragged end off the broken main, and rounded the back corner off so its not sharp to hold anymore.

Sharpened the pen blade too, and dropped its tip so its below the liners. Could have left it a higher tip, and dropped the kick, but that would have made it impossible to open without cutting a relief in the scale/liner, and I didn't want to do that on this one, wanted the frame shape left alone.
