Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

@ jrtodd46, I really like that alot. Bummed I missed Dan's rendezvous when he posted it in the "for sale" section.

I really like yours and great job Evan!!!

Decided to try "polishing a turd" this weekend. Always thought I could make something of this small Steel Warrior saddlehorn. Not too proud of my peening but I'll do better next time I guess. My only major complaint is the Spey seems to have a little bit of vertical blade play that was not there before. Which really bugs me because i was so careful not to mix up the back springs and to not touch the interface between the tang and spring. I'm thinking maybe the ever so slight eat away of steel by the acid dip and stonewash may just have done it. What say you more experienced mod-ers? Any other ideas of what may have gone wrong?

I find that if you don't match the pin diameters the same or fatter, it can induce some slop into the joint. This can be further amplified by if the pins are smaller on the springs. All those things can add up to weak snap or slop in the joints. Don't know if that is what happened here, but all I can offer.

On the plus side, I like what you did with the mod. Always good to show before pics, so we can see what they look like before.

Keep up the good work!

I have been on a TL-29 modding kick lately. Both of these are Camillus. The top one arrived caked in rust and took lots of time and love to get to this stage. I took it apart, and cleaned everything up, and put some scrap ebony on as new handles. I modified the utility blade into a Wharncliffe ground for whittling.

The bottom one was converted to a single blade EDC knife. I got some gorgeous bloodwood with a deep natural red color to use as a handle. I screwed up the bolsters a bit, but it turned out okay.

I like replacing the pins with nickel silver, which takes a nice shine, and look good on dark woods. On lighter woods I use brass.

Very nice mods. I like the mini wharn blade. Good stuff!

Thanks for that, definitely something I did not consider. But come to think of it the pins did not put up the fight I was expecting when I did the final assembly. Most of the modding I have done in the past has been SAKs, and for those I alway bump up to a 1/8 inch pivot. They're a fight to get in, but never ended up with a the play I got in this Spey.

I think it's either what Glenn said, or you pinned then too tight. That can cause the spring not to sit quite right.

I love the trapper an the TLs, great mods. 311 it's trial and error so the next one should be better, this one is not too bad anyway.

Are there any resources on getting started in this? i.e. the best way to remove pins, peening, etc? This all seems right in my wheelhouse, but I don't really know where to start.

Yes Sean, Esnyx did a tutorial thread here on modifying a TL-29 with simple tools a short time ago. Although I do things differently than him, it is a very nice tutorial and it was nice of him to take the time to do it. Check it out. :)

Great work, Mark! I can see your finished work getting better with each one you do! Has your wife/girlfriend (or both, LOL) complained yet about all the time you are spending in the shop?

Thanks so much for the compliment Glenn! Coming from you that says a lot, as I feel your work is simply the best I've seen. As far as my girlfriend and working in the shop goes, she is all............;):D

I am always incredibly impressed with the workmanship I see displayed here! I have done minor mods on knives, but not to the extent that I see you guys accomplishing! I am (anxiously!) awaiting my Vintage Knives Moose from Glenn. I had always wanted to have one with jigged bone scales and the shield on the same side as the clip-point blade. Once it's back in my hands, I will most definitely post pics of it! It will be replacing my 1988 Winchester 2880 1/2.

My hat is most definitely off to you guys and your skills!

Ron

Mark - I can see your re-handles getting nicer and nicer. I suppose practice does make perfect.:)

I would love to see some darker brownish-red bone re-handles in the future, that would be perfect on a Barlow re-handle. :)

Looking forward to seeing your re-handled knife. Glenn is the man, you will be very happy when you get it back.

Thank you Primble, that means a lot to me. I will do just that as I have two or three to work on and post some pictures. :)
