My first attempt at putting new covers on a knife. This is an older Camillus scout knife. When I bought it, one scale was missing and the can opener was rusted shut. Rosewood scales.

Re-ground skinner to a drop point...
removed mirror polish to an as ground finish...
Cherry red dye bath to add a little color...

I finally pulled the trigger on a yella comp Buck 301, and when it came in I was a little disappointed. Even with three springs, the blades were all jammed together, and none of the three had much snap. Worst of all, the main clip had the least snap of any of them. Looks like the spring is not tall (full) enough, as it barely lifts a sixteenth out of the frame when at its most depressed point, therefore no snap.

To help remedy these shortcomings, I cleaned, oiled and worked the blades until I had some closure, but it still needed more. In addition, the spey blade point and edge stuck up a full eighth of an inch above the frame when closed. So out came the belt sander. I worked the spey blade down to a drop point/pen blade, filed the kick, then added swedges to each of the blades. Drawn swedges for the clip and modified spey, plus a cut swedge on the sheepfoot, which I also lowered the spine on to make it more slender. See what you think!

My finishing is not very slick, but the mods have helped with the snap and general usage of the knife. I'm happy now.

Jeff, I like those mods. That Sheepfoot must've been a very odd high rider My 303's is under the Clip, but maybe the smaller knife is arranged differently?

Agree with you about Sitflyer's drop-point work, real improvement and a lot of finishing skill.

This is my only foray into modding production knives sparked by Jason Baker's display of a similar factory built one. I had Don Seals remove the spey and sheepsfoot and associated spring and center liner out of this Case sowbelly.

I like it a lot better as a single blade knife.

Neither had I. I had bought a bunch of exotic wood handle slabs a while back, and this was one of them. It just looks great once it's sanded and polished.

Ok, since thread is still going, here is another photo. From the old, CA, Buck factory custom shop . Set of Camillus made knives with addition of stag handles from CS. Mamba, I have done a little of that on my EDCs also.. 300

P.S. Truth be known, I prefer stag with smaller more 'popcorn' like fissures. But, I didn't have them done.

Several years ago, I picked up a Voos, or Vess, two blade jack. It was missing a pin, and pretty well dirty. I contacted STR about it, and he forwarded me to Bob Picklesimer. Bob cleaned up the blade, put a pin in, and sharpened it. Looked really good. I know, I know, I need pics.

I picked up a Remington barlow earlier this year, with the hopes of sending it to Bob. The pen blade is a little nubbin. I sent it to Bob to have new scales put on, and to get the pen blade removed, along with one of the springs, to make it a single blade barlow. Bob got it today, and here is the choice of scales he had.

I went with the green bone. I know a lot of people here love red bone, but I could not pass up this green bone.

Here's one thats only SLIGHTLY modified, I put a satin finish on the bolsters and the shield. It doesn't show scratches as easily.
