Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

I had some work done on these 2 #48s.

I had the main blades swapped as I wanted the narrower blade on the jack as I wanted it to be less noticeable when using the pen. I also figured the larger clip on the single blade #48 would make it easier to pinch open. As you can see I also had the covers changed. The jack is no Lignum Vitae and the single blade is black canvas micarta.

Very nice 2D! I like what you did with them. Very simple transformation, but clean and elegant.

Nice work.

Thanks Glenn. These are how I would have liked GEC to make them. I realize that the Scagel #48s are basically the single blade version I had made. The jack to me looks better with the narrower blade too.

Amen on both points. Those look fantastic.

Here's a Buck that I shaved 2oz off of...that's a 26% weight reduction. It carries about the same as my GEC 2351 now.

Wow, love that Buck. Is it thin enough to ride in the pocket now?

Kinda reminds me a little bit of that one by Kershaw, I think...

Thanks Glenn! Yah, the pocket melt treatment makes in comfy to carry in jeans pocket.

Sitflyer,

A question on taking off so much of the bolsters. It is my understanding that most cutlers taper the pivot hole only to a certain depth. Do you re taper the hole and re-peen? Or does Buck taper the hole so deep that it is of no concern?

Its why I have never taken much off my knives. Thanks for the info!

Kevin

You are absolutely correct in your assumption. This is pretty much a total disassemble and re build. Rocker pin peined to the frame... Blade re insertion is one of the last steps, after re tapering the holes. There is a lot more to it than meets the eye ;)

I've done a few production knife makeovers.Just finished a couple of Soddies.Stag with a G-10 bolster, filework, and i took the deep belly out of the blade.

Duane - your modded Buck is just a stunning knife! I really like the slim profile, what an outstanding piece!

Don - when seeing this beauty, it´s hard to believe, that it has been once an ordinary Soddie. The stag is great looking and the job with the G10 at pivot pin is a great idea. The filework is great too. The brass inlays between the two handle materials make it to a real gentleman´s / sunday knife.

Great modified knives, everyone. I really like this thread :) Keep 'em going!

Some fantastic mods have been posted! Here are a couple of Bucks I have modded.

I love those horn bolsters! Very unique use of materials.

Here's a couple I just finished:

Queen TL-29 Before
JQ1.jpg

after - elongated and bottom bolsters added, modified SD blade, antique green pick bone

Kabar barlow - before

after - Marigold bone

Here's a Case Wharncliffe Trapper I worked on. I etched the blades, jigged the bone more and dyed it darker. It
was fun trying anyway..lol
