Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

Couple projects lately: one on an Imperial stockman with some issues that I wanted to experiment on... I wanted to add a half stop, I wanted to try copper for pins, I wanted to dye some micarta, and I wanted to try to make it flush in all three positions...

Overall, I was pretty successful.... the half stop is great, I was able to get it flush all around. The copper pins kept wanting to deform and pull through. so I had to do a comparatively huge counterbore and REALLY flare the heads of the pin on the pivot to keep it tight... the dye job, eh, probably will not try that again. I'm thinking about modding the sheepfoot and spey blades and putting some really nice yellow heart I have laying around between the bolsters and making a sort of serpentine 1/2 Congress. I'll post pics if I do that one.

Last, a Rambler that will not be appropriate for the traditional forum when complete.... these guys are really interesting to open up though!

Really cool! I think the stockman came out great, and it's pretty neat to see inside that vic. I always wondered how they got their springs to be hidden.

I generally like to tinker around and modify knives that I think fit the bill for being affordable or worth modifying, so it should be no surprise that some of my favorite posts around here are ones that are titled "Thanks Glennbad!" or something like that. If alright with y'all, I'd like to see pics of any knives that you've sent off and had modified, or ones that you have modified for somebody else.

I would cut a little bit of a recurve into the blade from where it changes angles down to the tip. Then you can cut a nice swedge in that part.

thanks! gotta work carefully on the next part, i think i removed a bit too much

I really like what you've done with it. Can anyone fill me in on the purpose of the 'razor' blade shape? I've never really liked it. It looks like something you'd see in a prison knife to avoid the knife being used to stab, if you can wrap your head around that.

thanks! the razor blade shape is designed for one arm use. in theory some folks with one arm, would catch it on either their pant leg or perhaps a bit of wood on the table, just to snag it open. this was in the old days prior to autos were invented i suppose, since some states like NYC only allow owning an auto if you are one armed.

Oh, so it's basically an Emerson Wave (excuse my modern background) but for a slipjoint. It looks a lot more appealing now that I know that. Thanks!

right, sort of emerson wave but circa the past? idk the time frame of when it was innovated

Good job for your first attempt Jack. I would have probably gone a bit deeper with the recurve, but it looks good where you stopped.

As I read The History of the Northfield & Tidioute Brands, I was inspired to keep working. Rome was not built in a day, and neither is this mod. There is work to be done

much better now. Introducing GEC 15 Medium clip :D
