Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Stain. Or you flame blacken it and multiple coats of BLO. You can also put steel wool in vinegar and let it oxidize then use it as a stain.

Could someone have an idea for universally available agent for darkening the shaft? I have my hawk modding going and I'm not sure what to use.

Here is one I just finished with black wood stain. Minwax ebony. They look great in brown too.

Nice looking hawk!
I was thinking of leaving the paint in the deeper spots but I will sand the whole thing. I tried some patina yesterday but it looked bit unnatural with the paint.
This is painful project, I have only little spare time to pimp the hawk but the project is in my head all the time. :D

i'm thinking of getting a rifleman's hawk to mod, probably going to grind it into a sleeker, more elegant design, closer to the design of ragnar's ax in vikings. i am also going to get the 30" war hammer haft to give me more length to work with. whether i will cut that down or leave it as is is yet to be decided. any suggestions?
I am posting a pic of ragnar's ax to give the main idea.

I've had a CS Rifleman's Hawk since early 1994. It's a bit heavy and balances out about right on a 24" handle.

My contribution to the thread is a modified Rifleman's hawk.

Trimmed hammer poll
Trimmed beard
Shaved the hump off the top
Satin polished
Cold Blued
Properly fitted
Stained and BLO haft

First post! Thanks for all the inspiration guys. Here's my first modified trail hawk. It was a such a fun project, that I've already ordered a second to customize for my wife. I'm picturing something pink with hearts. ;) Anyway, after the basics I re-profiled the head added filework, filled the screw hole, wrapped the helve, and made a leather mask.
