Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

This is what I've come up.. on paint! lol

As you can see the spike's been removed and the handle shortened, I couldn't add the other ideas as my photoshop/paint skills are weak.

I'm thinking of a blade strip and polish, then a deep blue aswell. And a textured handle, lanyard hole and some rustic leather work to keep it safe.

I'll keep all updated! :)

I personally am curious how this turns out. There's a guy on Youtube (whom I can't remember right now though) that welded the spike into a hammer poll.

Ordered one yesterday so it should be here next week the latest!

I'm affraid welding and smithing is beyond my capabilities atm, but I'm pretty confident I can pull this one off. Check out this modifed spike hawk I found on google! https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=s...rds.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D235494;816;612

It pretty much has all the head modifications I'd like to do! looks great too so if I manage a clean job like that and get the handle done to my tastes I'll be very happy! :)

I have been thinking about doing this with a bearded look, for less weight backpacking.

Just spent a good hour looking through this thread. Inspiring work ya'll. I haven't touched my trailhawk since I got it about a year ago. Needs to be sharpened. Maybe I'll start there.... ;)

Got lot's of great ideas from this forum.

Hello, everyone! I have a few questions about this whole modding process. (Pardon me if the questions have already been answered, I just don't have too much time to read the entire thread)
1. How are the heads removed and replaced onto the hafts?
2. How does one acheive the tight, wound paracord wrap on the hafts?
3. Are the heads epoxied on or what?
4. What is the preferred method of sharpening a stawk hawk? (pun intended:p)

Thanks for all the help!

Parker

The heads are held on with friction. Remove the grub screw and tap the bottom of the handle on the ground and the head will come loose and fall down. The friction keeping the head on is due to the top of the handle being thicker!

Real simple. :)

if you can look past the grubby-ness of this picture it should explain it

most hawks and hatchets I've had and seen don't have this little feature and i chose to leave it out when putting it back together, i use a file to sharpen hawks, but imagine there's as much difference of option and preference involved as how to sharpen a knife

I'd recommend youtube for a video on para cord wrapping, advise against any kind fo expoxy to hodl it on (the ahdle breakign is kind fo a feature of hatchets and hawks in my view, it saves your arm and handles are easy to replace,

Thanks for the help guys, I think there may be a rifleman's hawk from amazon with my name on it! Here's what I have planned so far:
1.MAYBE reshape the hammer a little bit
2.Strip paint from head and polish
3.Strip handle stain and apply ebony stain
4.Paracord wrap
5.Sharpen

Any foreseeable problems?

UPDATE:CS Trail hawk inbound!!!! ETA is friday!!

UPDATE 2:My original plan was to buy a rifleman's hawk because they are about 5 bucks cheaper, But I don't like the hammer on it at all and I think it's a touch to big for me so I opted for the trail hawk on which I love the hammer! So no stub rounding, guys.:D

Also, how do you strike through text?

Realized I never posted pics of my latest hawk.
Sanded and sharpened head, boiled vinegar patina, debured and fitted the eye to the handle, file work on the ridge. Sanded and stained the handle with antique American walnut (5 coats) post-shrunk para cord handle and over strike wrap. OD Green Kydex belt hanger with 1.5" welded ring loop, locking Kydex mask.

Sounds good, can't wait to see it

Like the file work a lot, nice job!

All I've done to mine is remove the paint, strip the handle then reshape it slightly.

It cuts like a heavy machete! Seriously impressive cutter for a shovel. Doesn't split big/tough wood very well due to the handle tube in the middle of the blade getting in the way, but for camp fires n bbqs it's great.
