Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

******PHASE 1: COMPLETE!!*****

Well, I decided to deviate from my original plan a bit. I will still be adding a paracord wrap.

Yep, I chopped it. I wasn't expecting it to be that big out of the box (yea yea yea that's what she said very funny)

What do you guys think about leaving the stain like this? I kind of like how you can still tell it's perfectly natural just by looking at it. I'll probably be re-spraying the head. It was humid tonight in florida (Surprising Right?:p) so it took ages for it to dry, I got impatient and prematurely picked it up. Will post more in the morning when I reassemble it.

UPDATE: She's puuuuuurrdy. Doesn't throw as well though:thumbdn:

Finished it up Friday night. I'm not sure why but the front face of the shovel has some blemishes in the patina (even though I wiped it all down with alcohol).
Stripped the "head", sanded it and the handle, gave the handle 3 coats of black rustoleum, forced mustard patina, 25' charcoal gray paracord handle wrap.

what stain is that?
1 coat of Minwax Ebony. Got it at ace. I think I'm gonna restart this one from scratch because I didn't use any seal on the haft or head so they both got all jacked up after a few throws plus the stain didn't dry properly.

Bone stock right now but not for long (just picked up some stripper and PCB etchant yesterday):

From the Blade Forums FAQs.

"Yes, we know you found a great price on the Ninja Disembowel 4000 at SuperPriceMART. We don't care. We'd prefer you support the dealers who support BladeForums.com.
As such, we don't allow deal spotting because otherwise the forums would be a quagmire of "deals" (real or imagined) posted everywhere, or unscrupulous people posting "deals" for non paying dealers. So don't do it."

My current "edc".

Finally took my cam with into the woods

Modded CS trail hawk + a Marttiini outdoor knife (for 50 bucks this thing is a sturdy beast of a full integral knife)

Got some more but I have to play them to the gallery before

I started this project last year after Christmas. I wanted to give a good friend a gift that I spent a lot of time working on... this certainly fit the bill. I used the flapper wheel/dremel to even out the surface and a cordless drill to make a hole for the star pattern on the opposite side of the set screw. After that I never picked up another power tool until I used the belt sander to bevel the cutting edge. I did all the sanding by hand down to 600 grit.

Naturally, I had to make two (one for him and one for me) so the project was bogged down with double the work. I would sit down and work for decent amounts of time, get tired and bored with the sanding, and not pick it up back up for a month. I didn't document the process because there were enough posts with the before portion of what I started with.

Here is mine, I didn't get a picture of his before I gave it to him.

The details:
CS Spike Hawk
Vine pattern File work
Star pattern file work in set screw hole and opposite side
Acid etch "Poseidon's Trident" (his was etched with his family crest)
Hand sanded to 600
Cold blued finish
Burned and cherry stained haft

Some awesome looking hawks in here. You guys jave inspired me to start a project of my own. I'm going to pick a couple and I'll report back with what I come up with.

Think I might need some blue coat..

How does the blueing hold up when you start using the hawk??

I've never used it but I've seen a few tutorials and it looks simple enough.

Your spike hawk looks brill mate!

The cold blue was the easiest part of the whole process. Be sure to completely degrease before application.

When it wears I will just blue again, but I like the look of worn bluing.

Here's another one of mine together with an Opinel No. 12. Handle burnt and oiled. Paint rubbed off, head slightly modified. Some paracord.

I'm new to this forum thing-but I joined because I've been looking into ways to
make my own tomahawk handles for some cold steel hawks that i own out of something
tougher than wood. Micarta seems to be something that might fit that criteria. There's no information that I could find on this being used in this manner-and I've done quite a but of googling.
Before I go investing money and time into this I'd really like to know if this is the
case. Anyone have the answer to this? Tips or suggestions?

Could someone have an idea for universally available agent for darkening the shaft? I have my hawk modding going and I'm not sure what to use.
