Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Oh and lest i forget to give credit where it is due, the heads were finished by gunsnob and might i add quality work, i am colaborating with him on a sheath as well. looking forward to reviews on that.

this is pretty much finished product, the small wrapping under the head has a sub wrapping of steel tripwire GI issue for re-inforcement, will add cable cynch and end stop with glow plug so lanyard can be adjusted.

Sweetness+++!!! :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup:

I was almost going to talk myself out of buying one of these. I looked over all the pictures on this thread and am now going to place an order. Hopefully I'll be able to post some modded pics soon.

All right guys, I have had this idea since Q started this addictive Trail hawk modding craze. I just now got it all finished in my spare time. I think I am the first to post a pic of a rust browned head. My pictures aren't great and the brown does not look as deep as it is, but I love this look. I just stripped the head, degreased it, browned it, soaked it in baking soda solution to stop brown, and oiled it with boiled linseed oil. The pits that they left under the paint make the brown look even more authentic. I am gonna get all their traditional hawks now and do the same.

I have to thank you guys for the burning the handle idea though, I saw that here first. Stained it walnut after I burned it. Still thinking if I am gonna soak it in oil or polyurethane it or something.

Trying to figure out if I want a rawhide grip too. Still thinking......

What do you think?

outstanding work, brother messer'.

really lovely.

i've had it suggested that i shoud try some decorative turkish knots on my hawks - maybe when i do the faux wood handles - but they might be very nice for you to do in leather on yours.

in the PI last year, a lot of the natives had a rubber wrap on there aliwah in a pattern similar to the burns on your hawk (pictured);

maybe an opposing leather wrap to your burns, in an opposing helical pattern, maybe with plaited leather bands ...all sorts of goodies you can do....

show us whatcha got, bruthah.

What process did you use for the browning?

Vec- that's an interesting idea. I've done a fair bit of marlinspike, it'd probably look great with a thin manila and a good turk's head down near the handle bottom.

i agree - some buddy smarter than me made the original suggestion - wish i could take credit for it -har!

go for it, brother - there is so much talent here, who knows what mods could happen with a little bit of twine or leather string.

here's some new head finishes.

check out the Trail Hawk in the back - i chopped its cheeks off for weight savings and she is awesome.

i just love it when that happens....

What did you use to apply the paracord?

you talkin' to me, brother...?

(if so -) i just do a special way of tying it - it stays tight even when applied dry, and it comes off easily if you need a little extra camp line, etc.

i wrap under the heads to provide overstrike protection mainly, ...with something that has a second and third purpose, essentially.

i don't like specialization.

HTH.

VERY NICE! :thumbup:

hey all I'm pretty new to the forums but i'm very interested in modding my trail hawk that my bro-in-law bought for me. I'm heading to iraq and wanted to get ideas for what I should do to it. Basically I need something that is going to stand up to desert abuse and want it to match my camo pattern as well (Air Force ABU). I really like the mag pouch idea that was posted very early on in the topic. I'll start posting pictures of it once i start getting the materials together.

sounds great.

make sure and post those pics.

i just finally tracked down some Air Force Tiger Stripe in 1000 Denier Nylon that i can't wait to do a couple hawks in.

Yeah. I've been having a tough time finding material that is in the new Air Force pattern. It's suprisingly tough to find a mag pouch in it...plenty in ACU which I guess I can settle for if nothing else.
