Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Shootie, Shootie, S h o o t i e.

The haft will be coated with interior/exterior poly, so there will be no hint of a lemony fresh lifestyle choice. Sheesh...you are fixated on the lemon aspect of this modject bro: wazsupwitdat?

i have to admit, i was really looking forward to lemony-fresh zombies myself.

:D

I guess this falls under "if you're gonna make a mess, at least leave a nice smell behind" which must -- somehow -- be a result of allowing women to serve in the military. ;)

Part 3: Q's New Trunk Hawk

I ran into a bit of a problem applying the polyurethane clear coat to the handle...this is an issue which I've occaisionally run into in the past too. For the last 4 hawks I've mod'ed I have used this interior/exterior spray-on polyurethane which I procured from my helpful hardware guy down at Ace...

However, in my rush to get two (2) coats on the haft on Sunday night I did something wrong, and I was left with a sticky mess that (as of Monday night) had not dried. This poly has worked very well in the past and I think it was too damp and/or too cold when I applied the poly on Sunday. As I've done in the past when this occurs, I wiped the haft dry with a clean cotton cloth and I'll let it dry for a several days before I apply a final coat of the poly.

To be continued...

you can hit it with a hair dryer.

vec
I would think that using the hair dryer on it would be far more effective than hitting it with the hair dryer...:)
humidity and low temps don't mix with that stuff. I have found that if the outside temp is marginal, warming the can with hot water for about 5 minutes helps the dry time. YMMV.

My hawk is coming along extremely well with the file work (dremel work actually) and the bluing looking rally great. Now all i need to do is some work on the shaft and it is done other than a sheath.

Did the trailhawks always have that pronounced hammer? I thought I rembered it being more crude looking before?

I though I'd take a moment to collect some of the Trail Hawk Mods from this thread that I like the best. Here they are!

Were there any mods you didn't like, Q? :)...

Right! I liked all of them!...but I only included the Trail Hawk mods in my pics. Of them all I think the Trail Hawk/CS Shovel "Cow Mod" was the coolest...definately the most deranged...but the coolest in my book...hands down.

However...perhaps the most beautiful...and dare I say..."THE BESTEST MOD"...(to date) were the Trail Hawk heads that GunSnob Parkerized, poll polished, and added a convex edge to the blade end...truly this was magnificant work...

Thanks for posting those Q ,they gave me some good ideas for my hawk.

That spade and hawk with the cow pattern works surprisingly well.

I love the photo of the SAA with the hawk ,Burningcort. I have my first handgun ,a late 1800's S&W DA revolver in .44 Russian and I plan to have some leather gear made for the gun ,hawk and my bowie.

Well thanks to Unsub I have started on the hawk mods. So far I have stripped the paint, ground and sanded it smooth, reprofiled it and blued it.
I am going to do some leather work on the handle and if it works out, rawhide for overstrike protection.
Oh yeah and sharpen it...:p

It might just be the angle, but the top edge of your hawk's head seems to be bowed inwards/flared out at the edge--like the bottom edge, but not as radically. I like it.

Your hawk is looking really good Branson. The flared edge is a nice touch but I never would have noticed it on my own.

gunsnob is my hero, i'm thinking of sending more business his way. the hawks i've moded were all similar in design and give out as gifts to this point. i wanna try some different stuff and maybe get some sheath designs that are original turned into reality.
