Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Thank you Sir, you are too kind.

A Shooter's Seal of Approval (SSOA) is nothing! You need a QSOA...so send a head to me for complete examination, evaluation and exhaustive testing...special no charge testing deal for you bro!!!

IMHO, of all the Trail Hawk mods that have been posted to this topic...and there have been some very VERY good mods posted...this mod by johnbar is hands down the best. My $0.02 YMMV IMHO.

Heartily seconded, those are beautifully done.

I have people knocking down my door for my seal of approval. The problem is the amount of fish that damn thing consumes...

The Q Hawk is holding up nicely, by the way Brother..

Cut her off, and sanded her down. I love the thing ALOT more now.:D

Wow, I'm diggin' on that fixed blade knife you have there.

What kind is it?

Hello guys, newbie here so I hope I don't get flamed for haveing a riflemans hawk instead of the trail ...but anyway I did these a couple of years ago and thought I'd share them,

Also, I got board one day and decided to customize my Craftsman carpenters hatchet, sorry no before pics, but this is the result...

I cut out a big chunk of the blade with a dremmel tool to give it this shape.

Here's with a homemade sheath I put together...

Hey, don't worry, I own a rifleman's hawk too! AND I'm a newbie :D I just got inspiration from this forum to customize my hawk as well! And to start off I had a question...

Where do you get that leather from that you wrap your hawk with? I'd rather use that than just paracord.

Hey guys, I love everything being done in this thread... you guys are good.

I have a quick question regarding the edge of my trail hawk... I need to re-profile it some because it is somewhat blunt-ish...(bought it that way, sharpened it bit but still needs work.) In other words it's not scary sharp. The problem is, I'm afraid that if I re-profile it, I'd be losing some/most of the heat treat? I will only be doing it with a file but what scares me is I'm wondering if the heat treat ever really extended beyond the tip of the edge... am I making any sense?

Anyways, I'm sure I'm not the first person here trying to put a killer edge on the CS... ;)

Would it work?

I know what you mean. It won't be a problem. Go for it.

I had to chip at a bunch of ice with my trail hawk which totally fubared the edge deep. I fixed it up and the edge quality was no different. I can safely say that if the head is differentially hardened (which I doubt) the hard region is large enough that you can't possibly accidentally file past it in one day.

Thanks for the quick reply.... I've been having at her for the past 30-ish minutes with some of my really rough sharpening stones... I think reprofiling it with files might be overkill at this point... The hawk is very sharp now so I'm happy... it could always be sharper but for the purpose, it's not needed. I'll save my files for when it gets really ugly, but I'm happy to know I could go for it.

Thanks!

After a vinegar soak and etch, my Norse Hawk seemed to show a temper line about a third of the way up the bit, so I think they are differentially heat treated. I would expect the Trail Hawk to be similar, so I don't think you have to worry.

-I hope this isn't too late to help ya....

If I remember correctly, it is just leather boot lace that I picked up new for a couple of bucks. I got it in a few differant colors from light to dark, it's very strong and was pretty long. (can't remember exact length) I've also seen leather cord sold at craft stores as well.

Makes for a good knife lanyard too.

Have fun hawk modding!!:)

Rust Blue your Hawk and never look back. Easy to do and wears like iron should. Takes several coats but it is tuff. The old way of bluing.

l've decided my next mod job will be with a CS Norse Hawk.

Anyone put a longish handle on one, say 25" - 30" ?
