Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Okay i got the paint off the blade, and now I have sanded it down a little bit. I like the look, but I am curious to see what a apple cider vinegar patina would look like on it? Also do you think it is smooth enough to try a etch?

You might not see the etch if it's not smooth, depends how deep you make it. Try a Dremel if you have one then finish it off with sandpaper. If not, sandpaper works too, just be prepared to take a long time.

I agree. That amount of pitting will make an etch less distinct. I rely on a sanding attachment on a drill and an angle grinder to get the surface more smooth before etching. I've tried it by hand but I dont get it down as far as I want and it takes hours. For the haft, after staining you can paint on some polyurethane sealant.

On the haft, I have it sanded and smothed, I put a little bit of fire to it. Now i need to buy some stain, and after I stain it the color I want, is there something else I need to put on the haft after the stain?

that's what an apple cider vinegar patina will look like. Mine went straight from the stripper to the vinegar with no sanding or smoothing in between, so that's what it will look like

Okay Thanks everyone, I have two more questions now. 1. So i put a patina on my blade, and I want to put a etch on my blade, so I put the design on and then spray paint the rest, and then add to the etchant, and then after, remove the spray paint with sanding or with paintstripper, my question is Will this effect the patina?
2. Then my second question is I want to put a burn into the handle saying " Almon Valley ______", the last word either being militia or outlaw or confederate, Which word should I chose, and should I do the words wrapped around the handle from left to right, or go up the handle from bottom to top? Thanks everyone.

snowball I always do patina last because yes removing the paint will remove the patina, too. Remove the paint with stripper. I would burn the words vertically.

Thanks pullrich, I guess I wont be running by radio shack today to get that metal etchant, I will just worry bout getting the words burnt into the haft, thanks man.

Well I made a few modifications to my Norse hawk. Noting nearly as cool as a lot of the other ones that were posted here, but practical none the less. I used it today to carve out a handle for my primitive Sayoc-Winkler axe that I’m making.

I've been working on a Rifleman's Hawk, and DAMN that thing is rough and pitted! I had intended to get it all nice and smooth and then blue it, but I'm tired of working on it. I've got the handle stained a nice red chesnut but I might have to go to paint or something on the head.

You can get an angle grinder and attachment for under $50 and grind/sand it smooth. Can also find round sander attachments that go on the end of a standard household drill. That's my strategy, anyway.

Yeah, I'm using round 80 grit discs in a drill and I can't get down deep enough for some of the pits. (Sorry, should have mentioned what I was using.) The worst area is right in the middle of the blade just past where it flares out to take the handle. I'm afraid at some point I'm gonna take the blade down to paper-thickness.

It does get sharp, though. I just shaved some hair off my leg with it.

Hmm I wonder if you got the super-pit hawk. An angle grinder may be your weapon of choice. Today I ground off steel from this hawk head to get the profile I wanted, and then used a 220 grit sandpaper wheel to put on the initial finish.

Went through this entire thread looking at the different mods. Some very talented people here. I have a Trail Hawk on the way, and of course, will have to mod it. I more so looked at the photos than actual reading. Is there a good article around here for the entire etching process? Sure would appreciate any feedback.
