Moran Auction

Man....I'm at work, and my wife got the mail and said I got a package that "sounds like metal" (she's used to me getting packages of steel by now). When I double checked, it was indeed from our good Mr. Apelt. Now I have to last the rest of the day at work....this is worse than Christmas eve! :D

Thanks again Stacy, for your generousity, true character, and for making me feel like a kid again.

Edit to add: I'm home now and can't thank you enough Stacy. The extras are greatly appreciated as are the tracings. Now I have some idea of what shape I'm forging to! I'm still looking for pictures of finished knives by Mr. Moran.

Thanks again...

Purchase or borrow a copy of "Master of the Forge" (knife world books, http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-b...he+forge&.autodone=http://www.knifeworld.com/ ). It has lots of Bill's history, and philosophy. There are detailed photos and material descriptions of many of his knives. Many styles, too. My copy is one of my pride and joys. The fly page has personal salutations to me from B.R. Hughes, Bill Moran, Houston Price, and Johny Perry.

Looks like a fantastic book. Even though I shouldn't spend the $$ right now, I have to get a copy. Thanks a bunch for the pointer!

Thanks so very much for everything you've done Stacy  When my box arrived , I was blown away by the time & effort (and Cash) that it must have taken for you to put all this together. Almost brought a tear to my eye while reading the eulogy. One of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me Stacy , I cant thank you enough . The Steel,Maple Blk.,& Patterns will be put to good use & the eulogy will go into a frame,Never to be Forgotten My Friend Thank You so very, very much!

I received the package today. It's funny -- intellectually, I know that what you sent me, Stacy, is a few coarse tracings of some knife blades, a chunk of coal, a block of wood, and a piece of steel. Nothing more.
-and yet...
I can't help but be awestruck. I know that Mr. Moran was no more than a man, but somehow, Stacy, your act of generosity conveys everything I've ever heard tell of him in a manner the components in the box seem to transcend. It personifies this man in a way that seems both surreal and completely fitting -- both, at the same time. I'm honored, stunned, amazed, and even feeling a bit guilty about whether or not a hacker like myself can even be worthy of this.

I'll never forget this.

Thank you, Stacy.

Matt,
You should only feel guilty if what you make from that looks like a spatula!:D

Was able to pick up my little stash of goodies that my friend picked up for me from the auction. One of the things my buddy picked up for me was a small tackle box with some of Bills gear......nothing special....some plastic bobbers, hooks, spinners, spoons, rubber worms...etc. untill I started poking around in the bottom of the box and I found 3 or 4 pieces of brass hammerd to shape. Like pheobe spoons kinda. No marks...but ya know Bill made them.;)

Gentlemen you are so lucky to have a piece of history. I am envious.

I have an unfinished blade by the grinding master Mr. Engnath. It would be awesome to have an unfinished blade by the master of the forge to stand by it's side.
I can only hope to catch one at a decent price on the secondary market.

Stacy, that was a very generous thing you did. I salute you.

Santa stopped by my place yesterday. This "gift" from Stacy will go on record as being one of the best that I have ever received.

I will surely take my time and study how I may create something with these materials that would make Old Bill proud.

Thanks you Stacy....... You, just like Bill, are one of a kind.

Sincerely,

Robert

Well, then, I guess we BOTH know how this one will turn out, don't we?;) :D

For the record, Ashokan helped me a ton... in fact, watching Jake Powning the first night uninterrupted was incredibly insightful for me. I wish I could follow you as easily, Mace... but DAMN are you fast!

--Bill Moran's stuff might end up in a sort of a shrine at my domicile... at least for a bit, until I really feel confidant enough to do his memory any sort of justice.

I find it very interesting how a simple block of wood and a chunk of steel can prevoke such thought and inspiration. I think Bill would really have gotten a kick out of it.
Matt, I think you are the perfect person to have gotten this wonderfull little care package from Stacy. It's made you think, and thats good.
I have some of the same steel and wood and I look at it quite the same as all of you do..........now if I can only look at the rest of the steel and wood in my shop in the same manner................
Mace

Mace,

I have a feeling that Bill would have bought a whole big pile extra if he would have known. Just to spread the inspiration as far as possible. Still waiting like a kid at christmas, sometimes it hard to be rural, PO is not always fast!

--Carl

Heck Carl,
It isn't exacty a rural thing! I live on the fringes of Houston and I haven't receieved anything yet but this local post office is SLOW!!! I am used to "less than stellar" delivery out of these folks.

Craig

Yeah, doesn't bother me if my junk mail is slow, but get something you want coming and you get antsy!

--Carl

Yay!!! Mailman came today with a box. Thanks Stacy, this is wonderful. I will contemplate this steel and wood for a while now to get the right feel for this piece of steel.

--Carl

Got my package from Stacy today. I'm in awe and cannot thank him enough. This is a very heartfelt thank you Stacy for your generousity. I was lucky to have been able to meet Mr. Moran, tour his shop and attend the first Moran hammer-in. The knifemaking community is the greatest.
Scott

Hey Stacy,
Thanks for sending me those tracings. Got them today.
Mace

Stacy, You are the best! I recieved my Moran package today. You are so thoughful to put this all together for us! Those tracings are so cool. I hope to make a knife from it all that would do him proud. Thanks my friend.

I received my package today as well! Thank you once again, Stacy! Now...what to do, what to do.

Craig

Oh! One other thing...I have never been so excited to get a lump of coal for
Christmas in all my life! :D
