Moran Auction

Agreed. Looking for a stand/display box for the coal now! Stacy, you are one of the good ones.

Opening the box, I was almost giddy. Stacy, you've done a great deed. Let's hope one day soon I can forge that steel with confidence and purpose.

WOOHOOO!!!!!
I got my box today and it was just AWESOME! I can't thank Stacy enough for thinking of his fellow friends. Very few people would have been as generous. Thanks again Stacy!

jealous here.
wish i coulda got in on it.

I'll look in the photo file and pull up some more.

I wanted to post some more info on the handle and blade tracings. If you look in the "Moran 50 Years" book you will find knives made in these shapes. These were the 'extras' from when Bill was making those 50 knives (back in the early 1990's).The small teardrop shaped one is from a plank of Curly Hickory that bill drew out five handles on. He cut out two, used one to make the knife in the book, and set the other and the plank aside - until I became the owner. It was the first (and only, for all I can tell) time Bill used Curly Hickory. The other blanks were different wood types that Bill cut out to experiment. That box full of handle cutouts will be the ones that I use on the blades that Bill forged during that period, which I bought. The nine blades appear to be ones that Bill forged ,but didn't pick to make a knife for the series.

I have finished out one blade ,so far. It is the blade style used on the cover photo.Basically,a modified ST-24,with a Persian grind. The next one I am working on is a ST-24 fighter. I will probably have some photos by Sunday evening.
I am going to recreate the nine blades into knives as Bill made them for the 50th anniversary series.

On a personal note, I am touched (OK IG and Higgy, We all know I'm a bit 'teched in the haid'.) by the kind words and thoughts from you guys. I hope it make for a great Christmas for a long time.I'd like to think that Bill is getting a big kick out of all this!

9260 is like 5160 but has silicon (thus the '92'),which makes it ductile. This is and asset when forging.Forge it between 1600 and 2000.
Harden by heating to 1525 and hold until evenly heated (2-5min depending on blade size), quench in oil, temper twice at 350-425.I would suggest 400 for most blades.
Stacy

thanks i was wandering abut the heat treat too and that sounds much better then get it non mag and quench then heat to straw to temper :foot:
im glad to have a kiln sometimes

Hey Stacy, I got my box today. The mail lady brought it to the driveway and was woundering what was in the box since she knew I made knives for a living. I told her it was just coal and she looked at me kind of funny. To my surprize there were the drawings, the piece of 9260, a block of curley maple and last but not least a nice lump of coal. Like others I plan on making a display box for the coal.

As you know I've been putting my shop back together for it seems like forever now. Actually I just finished up my last bench and the plan for today was to get the forge hooked up and do alittle forging. I had taken a piece of steel out with me but I'll use what you had sent. Would you believe the piece of steel I had taken out with me was a piece of 9260 from an old coil spring?

Anyway, Thanks a bunch for the nice surprize! Ray

Raymond was the last to get his box,so they all got there! Enjoy them, fellas.
Merry Christmas - Stacy
