Most over-rated production knife brand?

Is overrated the same as over-priced? Overrated seems to imply that the knife does not preform well at its stated task(s)... while overpriced is something akin to believing that the knife is worth the asking price. I can see why some might think a Randall Made Knife is over priced, but not sure about overrated--they rate pretty high with those who use them. And then, even overpriced works out to be a subjective thing. Very likely, most of the knives we love are "overpriced" by someone else's criteria; overrated... well, some knives do not preform well despite manufacturer claims... those kinds of knives would be overrated by my estimation. Like the SOG Trident I bought years ago. Not casting stones--just trying to keep the criteria clear in my own head.

Benchmade for me.There's just no justification for a few omega springs on a bolt and premium steel and charging hundreds for the really nice designs...total rip-off.

I'd have to disagree. Randall has a pretty solid & storied History.

I can agree to disagree for sure and respect others choices. Imho Randall can make a solid knife and have a storied rep. But 440b can only eek out so much performance. Usable for sure, built to last for sure. But I am sorry they are not magic if performance is my only objective and I have 300-500 hundred dollar budget... 440B is not even *my conversation I don't care who makes it. Or 01 for that matter. There was a time they were cutting edge but that time has past now they have top notch craftsmanship with average/good steel. For their many fans that is more than enough to demand the price. But that is why I think they are hype...

I gotcha. This thread, if run long enough, will mention every brand known to Man and we all have are views.:) Good thing their are a lot of brands and knives to choose from.

That's right on all counts! And agree 100%.

Probably CRK no offense to Chris because I love and Own 4 sebenzas but Michael Walker should have made a version of his liner lock without putting scales overtop and called it a Walker Scale Lock. Not sure how the frame lock or RIL even got its own name I guess the name sounds stronger. Actually it is a liner lock that usually has a big chunk missing and needs to be heat treated to last.

This seems to be an incomplete and over-simplified contrast between Walker Liner Lock and the Reeve Integral Lock. For starters, the very act of gripping a frame lock knife reinforces and stabilizes the lock. You get no such action with a liner lock. This simple difference is huge. If you want to call out CRK for other things, that's fine but I just don't understand your reasoning in this example.

now aint that a loaded question if I ever heard of one lol so subjective :D

Buttt any 3.5" folder that weights over 5oz :D :D :D

Emersons are the most over rated knives ever. I bought into the hype for years and had many.

Microtech because of their customer service and warranty has to be up there.

I'd have to go with Microtech.
Some really cool designs........but that incredibly ridiculous hardware is completely pointless.
Also, and even worse, is the non existent customer service.
Joe

Yeah Emersons are expensive. I've never paid full street price for one and sold most off. But they're worth it to me when I get a deal. Never owned a CRK. If Chris Reeve left the company who's signing the birth cards?

Well when I first started into knives I played this game with the best. I did it with Spyderco I thought they were overrated and Benchmade was the best. Wow did I feel like a fool once I bought a Spyderco, the knives are amazing, the customer service is second to none, and the owner has to be one of the coolest down to earth people you could talk too.
So after Spyderco my attention turned too CRK's. I thought they looked plain, boring, and over priced. Bought a CRK and it is one of my favorite and most carried knives.
So for me now I have honestly not singled out a company I have found over rated. I may not like some of the models but that's about it.

Emerson gets my vote but, if Mr. E would upgrade some stuff to match the price point I wouldn't feel that way. His knives have great ergonomics and the Grinds are just cool as well as the wave. The kicker to that though is the flimsy liner lock and some fit and finish. If they could fix that then I would be more inclined to buy from the brand. I have had several of his over the years but generally sell or give them away for one reason or another.

I agree I have a lefty 7 in the drawer right now with the liner lock all the way to the wrong side pushing against the blade so much it sits against the frame and is scoring it up. I need to send it in I guess. Now if Mr.E would put a thick liner in his regular folders like his custom folders they would be a lot better and get rid of those ugly phillip head screws also. Other than that I like a lot of Emersons designs.

1. I love me a liner lock. One of my favorite locking mechanisms for EDC.

2. I don't think that it would be possible to be more over rated then Medford knives

3. I think CRK is slightly overpriced. Their materials are not earth shattering, but their build quality and repeatability are excellent. The warranty service is also excellent. Consider that for your lifetime you can send your knife to CRK to be sharpened, have the lock tuned, and he scales blasted for free (other than cost of shipping).

Emerson didn't invent that blade shape. He got it, with permission, from Phill Harsfield.

Boom. I'll jump on that train... Emerson is way high priced for their quality/fit and finishes etc. fwiw I have a 600+ Emerson so I can talk based on experience

I own several customs but I loath the idea that any knife can cost more than $500-600. I mean this price should cover any labor and any materials (except precious metals and gemstones) once the price gets over that you get ripped off (often willingly :) you pay for the "cool factor," pixie dust and unicorn tears.
