Most Overrated Folder

I'm afraid I can't stay engaged with you if this is going to turn personal. Have a nice evening and TTFN.

What was this thread about again ?

:p

I'm sticking to my statement that no folder is overrated. People buy what they want for different reasons.
As long as they're happy with what they buy thats all that matters.

I did not mean to offend you. Some of your posts seemed sarcastic, and if they were not, then I apologize. However, I would like you to answer the question, getting closer to what?

Actually your right, best to let it be. We have hijacked the thread after all. If you'd like to continue this friendly discussion over email, feel free.
Take care Buddy

speaking about overrated I have to say XM ,
were is simply to much noise around it , bought it, played with it for a while ,sold it .
and don't miss it .

I said it before and I'll say it again. The ONLY way I would buy an XM at secondary market prices is if I didn't know any better. Unfortunately, I do know better. So no XMs for me . . . or at least none I can speak about openly.

On the other hand, it's like Ken says. If it makes you happy to buy an XM at secondary market prices, who am I to say you shouldn't?

In my opinion "knowing better" has nothing to do with it. For me at least. It would be a different if I couldn't resell it, but we all know we can. Now, if you asked me, would I spend the money on a hinderer if I had to keep it, I would tell you no, and agree with you that it isn't worth more then what Rick says its worth.

However, it is a fine knife, and I am willing to keep my cash tied up in it until I decide to sell. You could do the same thing, and even make money. How is that knowing better?

I get it. So basically you "rent" Hinderers knowing that you're not going to keep them and you'll be able to sell them for at least what you paid for them. I don't see anything wrong with that strategy. The HOGs have been using it for years. It's just not for me.

Anything Emerson. Yea, I said it.

I don't think that Emersons are over rated; they're just far over priced. I got a 2012 Roadhouse for $125 off of a forum, and that is the only way I'd ever buy a knife like that. There is not a snowball's chance in hell that I would spend $220 on a new Roadhouse. Emerson's knives are good, but they are not worth how much they sell for brand new. Maybe if they had CPM-S30V steel, a better detent, and nicer looking handles I would consider spending that much.

For $220 I can get a brand new ZT 0560 or 0300 from Kershawguy, a Benchmade 760, or a Spyderco Southard. Those have premium steel, a titanium frame lock, machined scales, they rarely have bladeplay issues, and they have amazing pivot systems.

Well said.

Wouldn't the fact that its overpriced mean that it is overrated?

Unfortunately when a Thread is started that basically asks for negative responses it brings out this type of dialogue among us. We all have our favorites and some we are not especially fond of, that is okay. I'd rather see a healthy discussion on the positive attributes of a particular brand or knife.

If the question was asked in a car (flash light, gun, tent, etc) forum what is the most overrated car the same type of comments would ensue I'm sure.

Each to his own and you don't have to justify your knife to anyone.

And I, for one, appreciate the give and take. It's threads like these that got me into looking at customs as an alternative to high-price production knives. Needless to say, that investigation has been nothing short of a revelation. But had it not been for someone standing up at some point and saying that there's more to the knife universe than my small mind had managed to wrap itself around, I would never have gotten out of my comfort zone and taken a look for myself. And if I can do that for someone else, I'm passing on the favor that someone passed to me. At the end of the day, it's the disagreements among us I find to be the most valuable, not the agreements.

I agree with this. Oh crap--I suppose I should have disagreed so that we could get more out of the discussion ;)

Jokes aside, I really do agree with this, though. When we have a civil discussion around something that people have strong opinions about, some of the best, most useful conversation happens in my limited experience here. Compared to "I love knife X", "I love it too", "look at my pretty picture of knife X" and a thread that seriously debates the merits of knife X versus knife Y or something of the like, IMO the latter produces much more useful conversation. I enjoy the picture threads and me too threads and so forth, but there isn't any reason to condemn frank discussions when they occur, at least not if we all try to behave like adults most of the time.

I guess I'd best shut the blast doors for this one, but I think the ZT-0777 is grossly over rated. I fondled the demo at BLADE 2012 - and last month, my local dealer got his 0777's in - I had to go look - and fondle. I returned with my Kershaw TILT! for a comparison - and left happy to have my knife, even if it cost, with s/t, significantly less than half the 0777's list price. All of the delays - the blade material change - the fact that there will be no spare parts when they are done with their still ongoing production - and the price - combined to nix my purchase. No matter, there were folks ready to grab it. It is a handsome knife... sort of. If I didn't have the TILT!... I might have been interested. No, too many negatives for me, sorry!

I agree wholeheartedly. The 0777 always struck me as a very pretty art knife, but a vastly over-hyped one. I don't really think that the lack of spares for these knives will be much of a problem, since the vast majority of the 0777s made won't actually be used.
