Most Overrated Folder

spyderco southard was the most overrated knife I've ever owned. cared not for that knife one iota.

There are some knives on the market that are being overhyped. Sometimes it's because of the manufacturer, the price, the designer. etc.. One example is the Cryo. Designed by Rick Hinderer for Kershaw. Sounds great until you get to the made in China detail. Not that the Chinese can't manufacture a good knife, they can. Unfortunately they don't. The Cryo and Cryo II are decent cheap knives. A little more attention to detail and a better than "value" grade steel and they might have had something worth buying.

What is a knife if not the blade? You can have a beautifully crafted knife with a mediocre steel blade and all you have is a mediocre knife. 8Cr13MoV is a mediocre steel. That's why Kershaw is selling knives with 8Cr13MoV blades for under $20. The Cryo is a small, heavy, cheap knife that won't hold an edge nearly as well as a knife with a good quality blade. Yet they're selling like hotcakes simply because of a designer label.

These knives are meant to be beater knives. The good thing about the Cryo is that its a beater with good looks too. EDC it for a week, its pretty awesome despite its weight.

Hinderer by far, just too expensive. For that price I can get a custom with every feature I could ever want

I think Kershaw as a brand is overrated. Their products tend to be quality and i own a few, but there is nothing special about them all of the designs tend to blend together they dont really do anything for me.
Zero tolerence is another story.

It's a personal thing obviously. Right about now I'd say the P2 was not overrated but surely over-hyped. People paying several hundred dollars for a CTS-204p knife with green G10 scales? I'll take the Southard with the same steel, fantastic F&F and a great blade shape for far less $$.

My personal opinion are the Emersons. Never owned one admit-tingly, but have handled them at the shop. Those screws, liner lock and shape to me are just ugly, but they sell and folks like them so how can anyone judge.

Couldn't agree more!
Every Hinderer is "designed for hard use" and "rock solid" yet 99% of the sale specimen has "never cut a thing".

Have you ever owned one? I'm guessing no by this response. Hinderers are far from overrated. Mine is my favorite folder and its seen plenty of use

I think alot of Jason Brous's work is overrated, although that is more true with his fixed blades than his folders. The Division Flipper is pretty nice.

Hinderer Xm is the most overrated folder by far.

There's a big difference between overrated and overpriced. At MSRP, the Hinderer XM is both rated properly and priced properly. At secondary market prices, the Hinderer XM is still rated properly. But in my opinion, it's no longer priced properly. It hasn't lost its rating because the price has doubled. It's still worth exactly what the manufacturer says it's worth. But at secondary market prices, an XM has to compete against products that were designed from the ground up to cost twice as much as it does. If some people honestly believe that a product designed to sell for $385.00 can hold its own against products designed to sell for upwards of twice as much, more power to them.

Exactly!

Question, If a bunch of people share very positive feedback on a knife does that make it over-rated? Or does it mean many people find it to be a superior product worth talking about?

Well, one can really only speak real on what they've used and since I'm not into expensive knives, I'll toss in the Leek. Something about that weak tip bothers me and I've never cared for the way it felt in my hand. Good knife but I have to say it's overrated.

Now if I were to to guess on knives I don't own and have never used, I'd say: Sebenza, CRKT M16s, Blur, Delica, Tenacious (though I hope when I get my hands on a Delica that I'll feel differently.) My basis is mainly gut on those (except the Sebenza, I really only say that because I've heard the word Perfect mentioned with it too many times) so my opinion's pretty much worth nothing to anyone here but it's honest.

but they don't sell at that price. Because we're not "active duty first responders" rick thinks we suck and hates us.

Hinderers. I just got my first XM-18 today, and I love it, but it's not worth the $600 I paid for it. Beautiful knife, great ergonomics, it looks great, and it's beefy. I really love my XM-18, but if it is not worth the secondary market value. If I paid MSRP price I would be happy with it, but I don't know why people jack the price up so much. My ZT 0560CBCF feels better than my XM-18

I don't know that I'd go quite that far. If he really hated us and thought we sucked, I doubt he'd have bothered to contract with ZT to build the 0550 and 0560 series.

There's a simple answer to that one. People jack up the price so much because other people are willing to pay it.

Also, regarding the Hinderer XMs, it depends if you're the fly or the windshield . The guy who buys it for $400 and sells it for $1000 certainly can't say it was over priced...but the one who buys it for $1000 may end up feeling that way. I have a prodo XM-18 and it's F&F is very nice. I don't feel I overpaid, but I can see where some would feel that way.
