Most Overrated Folder

Also, regarding the Hinderer XMs, it depends if you're the fly or the windshield . The guy who buys it for $400 and sells it for $1000 certainly can't say it was over priced...but the one who buys it for $1000 may end up feeling that way. I have a prodo XM-18 and it's F&F is very nice. I don't feel I overpaid, but I can see where some would feel that way.
When you bought your proto XM-18, were you the fly or the windshield? If you were the windshield, you had no reason to feel like you overpaid for it knowing what you could sell it for on the secondary market. If I you were the fly, on the other hand, you may have been blinded by the light and not even had the sense to know what hit you. ;)

Here's what I'd like to know from folks (particularly first-time buyers) who purchased an XM on the secondary market:

1. How many of you actually took the time to find out what else was out there for the money before you made your purchase decision?
2. If you didn't do the research, why not?
3. If you did do the research and you knew what else you could have bought, why did you buy the XM instead and do you now feel like you got your money's worth?

These knives are meant to be beater knives. The good thing about the Cryo is that its a beater with good looks too. EDC it for a week, its pretty awesome despite its weight.

That's kind of my point. To me it's a toolbox knife, not a knife I'd want to EDC. Of my less expensive knives I could EDC my Mini-Grip or Delica 4 and be assured that I was carrying a knife with a good quality blade. If I carry my 930 Kulgera I have a 3.6" S30V blade and I'm just barely at 3 oz.

Again, the only reason it's popular is that it's a Hinderer design, not Hinderer quality.

I believe the same can be said for the upcoming ZT 0566. Advertised as "the answer to many folks asking for a smaller version of the popular 0560/0561", the 0566 has nowhere near the build quality of an 0560/0561. In fact, it appears to be little more than a Cryo II on steroids (i.e., better blade steel and G10 handle). Compare the specs of a Cryo II versus an 0566 and judge for yourself:

Kershaw Cryo II:

Overall Length: 7.75"
Blade Length: 3.25"
Blade Material: 8Cr13MoV (Stainless)
Opening Mechanism: Assisted Opening
Lock: Frame Lock
Closed Length: 4.50"
Handle Material: Stainless Steel
Clip: Stainless Steel
Weight: 5.38 oz.

ZT 0566:

Overall Length: 7.70"
Blade Length: 3.25"
Blade Material: Elmax (Stainless)
Opening Mechanism: Assisted Opening
Lock: Frame Lock
Closed Length: 4.45"
Handle Material: G10 and Stainless Steel
Liner(s): Stainless Steel
Clip: Stainless Steel
Weight: 5.3 ounces

The biggest difference between these two models appears to be price . . . less than $40 street for the Cryo II and over $140 street for the 0566.

IMO, the 0566 should have been called the Cryo III, kept in the Kershaw line, and manufactured in China along with the rest of the Cryo family to keep the street price under $100.00. To my way of thinking, it isn't worth any more than that regardless of where it's made and whose logo is on it. As a ZT offering that ought to embody Hinderer quality the way an 0560/0561 does, it's a swing and a miss in my book. And it's poised to win my "Most Overrated Knife of the Year" award the moment it hits dealer shelves.

I have to say Hinderer knives... Never owned one but I have handled an XM18... I find the Reate folders do flip better.

Hinderers are designed to open, by thumb stud, inertia and flipper. If you know what you are doing they will open very well all three methods. Reates are designed to open by flipper only and they're bearing flippers. Big difference.

I would say the most overrated folder is the one with a 3 to 3.75 inch blade (almost all of them it seems), considering what it offers over a 4 to 5 inch blade.

Apparently this is due to laws as to what you can carry/display, but I simply don't find that argument convincing. The utility and versatility of the design are what matters. I find it amusing that in a country with the most liberal gun laws in the world, people that actually carry guns are concerned about exceeding some local laws by a quarter to half an inch of blade...

Spydercos because of their prices.Have a few ,have not bought any in yrs.But I am just about ready to get a Matriarch 2,go figure?

I have to agree! Great knives, but with the ridiculous prices they have lost their value completely.

Question, If a bunch of people share very positive feedback on a knife does that make it over-rated? Or does it mean many people find it to be a superior product worth talking about?

It depends. They're reasonable people or fanatic fanboys?

Emerson - I own CQC-7A, and I like that knife but seriously, $180 for rough fit and finish, late linerlock and simple materials? Fortunately I bought my piece for less than $180, something around $115 and that is fair price.

Not on this forum, they aren't. I think QM is pretty universal unloved here.
I'm with you there Wade but what's mind boggling is some of my favorite retailers still sell them even after the deseption has been brought to their attention. :(

I'd also say Emersons because of their prices. They are good knives, and the ergonomic ar excellent, but for the price there are simply so many better choices. Feels like we are paying the premium just for the name..

We choose to live in restricted cities, counties and states within the United States of America in spite of ridiculous gun and knife regulations.

It's about responsibility. Us knife folks need to obey the law to set an example and to show people that not everyone that carries a knife carries it as a weapon.

This is kind of off topic but regarding guns a man in my state was open carrying his firearm , he went into a bank and the officer at the bank asked him to take the gun off , man refused 2 times .

The officer told the guy just take the gun off and go about your business and 2 times he refused . He was arrested etc. He ended up taking it to the Supreme Court and won his case that yes he was allowed to open carry.

The more time goes on the more the population thinks that anyone carrying a gun or a knife has bad intentions . I'd say most of us here are good honest people that don't carry guns and or knives with intent to do harm, but rather a knife as a tool and a gun as a defensive weapon not offensive . Laws are laws and agree with them or not disobeying the law does more harm than good.

Back on topic as far as overrated folders I'd say any folder that doesn't cut well. I don't have a need for a knife with a quarter inch thick blade or overly thick blade with a edge on it at 35 dps.

I use my knives to cut so I prefer them thin and sharp . I do have some overbuilt folders but in use there's always a tool for the job . The job I use my knives for is cutting so I want the most efficient cutter.

I have no need for a knife that can handle 300lbs of weight at the handle or that I can pry with . Nothings more frustrating than trying to break down a box or some other cutting task with a thick blade "hard use " knife.

+1 first and foremost, buy knives that cut.

Medford knives.

100% agree. And to me, Greg Medford, the YouTube persona, is so off-putting. Granted I don't know him personally. I'm sure I never will, but if he's anything like he portrays himself in his videos, I don't want to. WARNING: This is an opinion. You've been warned.
