Most Overrated Folder

I don't feel any knives are overrated. If people are buying them its because they like the knife.
Doesn't matter what others think. Just buy what you want.

I see no reason to say bad things about knives I don't happen to like, and I don't see why others feel the need to either.

More like can't afford, won't afford as the higher end stuff is always a target and likely always will be.

We always see things like this (enter cheap knife here) will do anything that (enter expensive knife here) will do..... And that's usually utter complete BS 99% of the time...

Comments like just as good are key statements followed by complete BS after....

I will say it again, the sweet spot is the $125 - $225 range.

It really comes down to real use and needs because if the knives aren't really used it doesn't matter what knife it is as they are all the exact same if they are just play toys or pocket ornaments.

I think Spyderco isn't the top contender in terms of asthetics, but... upon using them that's when you just smile at least that's my experience.

Sebbies are very overrated to me. I do own two: an Insingo and a classic. Sure the fit and finish is phenomenal, but when I buy a knife the performance of the blade is the most important aspect. I think I ruined myself by buying a Southard first then get the Sebbies... My Southard easily out performed either Sebbie. It was a big let down for me. I'm not hating on CRKs by any means. I still enjoy my two Sebbies because I still appreciate what a Sebenza represents and the amount of work that Mr. Reeve puts into it. I just don't think that they are as amazing as most forum members claim.

I know for sure I am going to need to put a fire suit on for this one, the Spyderco Southard. Not because I think its a bad product but because it is the ugliest folder I have seen in a very long time.

I'm assuming that you've never used one. It's such a nice knife, not in just terms of fit and finish, but the ergo and performance. For the price of it, it's easily my favorite. I wasn't too fond of the look at first, but upon obtaining it and using it that look just grew on me. If you've never held one then you definitely need to get that fixed. If you had one and traded/sold it without using it, then you should give it another chance.

My $30 Buck Vantage is just as good as a Chris Reeve Sebenza FOR MY USES. Most of my EDC tasks consist of opening packaging, cutting up food, and maybe whittling a stick. While my primary concerns with my EDC knife are cutting performance and lock reliability, I also care about aesthetics. Cheaper knives are sufficient for most of my applications, but I still like my expensive folders. I have no problems criticizing knives that I don't feel are worth the price (I.E. EKI) or have other issues, but I don't bash knives simply because I cannot afford them.

I'm not a fan of the XM either, but I see no reason to infer people may be dumb for paying aftermarket price for one.

Because, don't you know, that this is what we do on the interwebs. Mock and insult people who have different opinions that we do—especially about very subjective issues like knife preferences.

Sounds like you could get by with a $5 gas station knife then or a $10 SAK? ;)

Some of us here use our knives a lot harder than that and on a daily basis so yes that's why real use and or needs do matter and that will vary depending on the person.

I'd agree on the southard. Too much money and crazy ugly (but looks are a taste thing)

Kershaw tilt. Traded for one and I hated it, maybe my least fav knife ever because I really wanted to like it

Zt0550 a lot of people love them but the heavy/fat/stubby profile is just no good for me

I am downright insulted by such a suggestion!!! :p

I wish I actually needed to use my knives hard enough to use D2 or S110V, unfortunately I do not. I still like higher performance knives, but it can be a little hard for me to justify sometimes.

LOL :D

It wasn't an insult. :)

I was just pointing out for that type of use something like an SAK would be fine... I use an SAK to open mail with for example.

Perception is a powerful thing and that's why I always point out real use.

I actually carry a SAK as my PC knife. Does the job for some stuff, I prefer larger blades for things like food prep and cutting boxes.

Anyway, I think some of ZT's folders are overrated, at least the ZT200 is. You'd expect better cutting performance from a knife with such a heavy recurve. The edge is fairly thin, but the blade stock is too damn thick to cut well. I love the knife, feels really solid in my hand, but I would have preferred better cutting performance.

Don't get me started on those tactical type knives.... They for me are boat anchors. :D

Personally I find the Spyderco Military to be the best EDC work knife, that's for my use after testing and using a lot of different knives.

Yep, and I'll never understand why people do this.
Even when they don't insult a person by saying things like "I'm simply not dumb enough to buy it", they are still insulting them in a way(IMO) by saying bad things about knives that they know alot of people here love.

I also don't see why the OP named the thread "most overrated", when the one he mentioned never even gets talked about, and is far from overrated:confused:

I think he knew what this would start, and just wanted to get a heated thread going.
His thread title should have been "Haters come on out":p

Just because one might not the looks of a knife or feel that it is overpriced does not mean that it is overrated. It is overrated if it doesn't measure up to the manufacturers claims or user's reviews (ratings). The most overrated folders in my opinion are Emersons and Cold Steel.

CRK Sebenza.... I was't thrilled to own one. I don't understand what the big deal was.

For me the most overrated is the Sebenza. I was so happy when I got one, and quickly lost interest due to poor F&F. The knife does not get very sharp, and it is just not that comfortable to hold on to. I would never buy another.

Ok, I have never been one to use someone elses quote in my signature line, but if there ever was a post that is "sig-worthy", this is it!

For me personally I mention bad lock-up because it is one of those things nobody likes - even on a slipjoint. Brands and models specific features find a way to appeal to some and/or do well at certain tasks. If it's not a model with repetitve defects how can it really be over-rated.
