Moving away from folders towards fixed blades

I'm trying to get the hang of the pocket sheath but I'd rather just hang it off my belt.

I made the one in oil tan specifically for front right pocket and that plastic one can be set up for anything...
Something like this is most enjoyable and easy…FA18EABE-0304-4922-818F-98EBFC4C11AA.jpeg67FEA6A4-21DE-426C-8915-336045788FC5.jpegthe combo of a high retention clip and it being centered on the sheath allow drawing and resheathing a dream. The sheath won’t move around on you. It also helps to have the top of the sheath level or just above the lip of the pocket.

Joe Watson Magni rules the small fixed blades for me (top and bottom knives).

I currently prefer small folders to fixed blades for EDC, but I recommend checking out the Hot Metal Knives scalpel if you are looking for a small EDC fixed blade with a full length handle.

That looks like a perfect design there. Thanks for the suggestions!

My clip sucks. It looked nice and was easy to rivet to the sheath, but the retention isnt the best.

Oil tan is nice for a comfortable sheath, but you can't mindlessly sheath the blade like you can with harder veg tan. It does have a thick veg tan welt which kinda saves it. Without that it wouldn't be good.

Overall it's functional and not bad for a throw together prototype but I'd like to make some changes on a new one. This one would work fine for normal day to day stuff but at work it would get to be a pain if I was using the knife often.

Yours is def a nice looking sheath. Mine looks like it was thrown together in a prison cell lol. I actually have leather on the back of mine for comfort, and I put Kydex on the front to mold the shape I needed

I just picked up a Benchmade Intersect, which could be a good EDC fixed blade option for people who want a small yet stocky fixed blade. I have medium sized male hands and can just barely get a full four finger grip on the handle, without using a lanyard.

The stock sheath works well enough for front pocket or vertical belt carry, without the retention strap. The retention strap is removable. The retention strap is necessary for situations where you are potentially going to invert the sheath. If you prefer horizontal belt carry, you will probably want to get another sheath.

The blade grind is thick, so better suited to light prying than fine slicing. The edges on the spine are slightly rounded, so if you you will need to a little bit of grinding if you want crisp edges on the spine.

While this one has a bit long blade, at 4 1/2", it handles great and the blade is fairly thin as well. The guard is extended out more than most but serves to protect you during use. The sheath is one I made that has a copper rivet belt loop that allows the sheath to swivel so when you go to sit down, you can swivel the sheath forward.

Those are really nice.
I handled one in a store some months ago, and I keep thinking about it.

I believe you have posted about that knife in the past, and I thought you sold it.
👍

Thanks, I would highly recommend it if you have the opportunity to pick one up, so well designed. And yes a while back it was sold but I was able to get it back home again, just put a convex edge on the blade this morning and that makes it a very slicey cutter indeed. The sheath, kinda looks like a gun holster a bit, but with that extended guard design it was required to allow it to fit, the guard slides down on a curved welt so it snaps the knife into the sheath securely with a nice thunk as it reaches the shelf the guard rests upon.

I've tried several times over the years to carry a smaller fixed blade. Smaller just because I've always worked a job that limits what I can carry. The most recent attempts were an Esee Izula and Xancudo both in S35VN and a Mora Eldris and light duty version. Both Esee knives have the hard plastic high retention sheaths that will pull right out the pocket before they ever let the knife go. Popping them loose with a thumb of course works but they are just too crazy tight for my taste. I did find a Kydex option for the Izula that works so I need to give that one a few more chances. Just didn't like a belt knife being so visible and can't find a pocket carry option for the Eldris twins.

We have several excellent leather workers on the site that I'm sure could figure out a pocket sheath that will fulfill your needs.

Definitely thought about it to the point of trying to mock up some drawings and such on paper. Was also looking hard one of the smaller Mora carving knives or the BPS Finn Lite. Overwhelmed by options I suppose.

I imagine most makers would just have you mail them the blade so the sheath would be exact. For such a task, Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery would be my pick ☺️

Over explanation inbound:

Sorry, I meant more along the line of doodling up designs I might like. For instance, I don't care to have so much handle out the pocket for the world to see and catch on everything, I like the tight clamping ulticlips, but most designs I see either sink the whole knife and sheath into the pocket making putting the blade back a chore. The Mora options are basically tiny puukko knives which means a small lanyard at the end would mean easier removal and if the top of the sheath were at the top of the pocket that would mean minimal knife exposed. So I keep going round and round.
