Mule ZDP189?

Sal, please, please hold these up for at least Two Weeks!

Considering I am without the funds necessary to purchase 4 of them, I will add my voice to his. What's the harm in holding onto them for a couple more weeks? :D

I've got my funds ready...but for some reason would kinda like to see these held up two more weeks:confused:
This could get really funny by then:p

+1 to all of the above............ :D

Wonder if the Spyderco Factory Outlet can be set up to reject purchases based on the first name of the buyer?

Just asking :)

I really like the look of the mule, looks very functional and not too big. I am wondering about the characteristics of the ZDP189 steel. I have no experience with it. I am assuming it is stainless. I think I recall hearing that it is durable though somewhat hard to put an edge on. Are my assumptions correct? and what is the price range?

It's stainless qualities have come into some question. There have been reports of easy staining, probably due to all the chromium being formed into carbides in conjunction with the massive amounts of carbon.

It's extremely hard, in the 62-63 range, so yes, it's hard to put an edge on. It's not as durable as say S90V or 3V. It's not a tough kind of steel.

Third week of June - no Mule ZDP189.

Vassili.

They have been working on getting the Sage II and Manix 2 out this month as well, and those two are now shipping to Spyderco dealers, so hopefully the ZDP Mule isn't too far behind. Either way, with those other two major new releases, I'm sure Spyderco QC has been slightly overwhelmed and will be getting to the Mule as soon as they have a chance.

I don't know if this may also be related, but recently U.S. Customs has been trying to get new laws approved that would adversely affect Spyderco's ability to sell the knives they currently do. Since there was only a 30 advance notice on this, Spyderco has probably focused their time on fighting this legislation before the deadline. The time spent on this effort may have left them with less time to get the Mules prepped for shipment. It is better to make sure they can sell knives in the long term then get out this one knife exactly on time in the short term.

That's my 2 cents.

I like to hear Sal comments on this.

Thanks, Vassili.

Why ???
It sound like a "joke" to me......... :D
And yes you appear to be the butt of the joke..... however, you did that to yourself. ;)
Oh well ..................

Before I hear from Sal clearification on their Factory Store policy and that they or anyone from Spyderco have nothing to do with this person and this comment made on Spyderco subforum - so far this is not clear in my opinion.

It is not kindergarden playground here, even you guys turning it into something like this. However time to time when kids goes too far someone need to put things back to normal.

However, I do not see this knife in Store anyway...

Thanks, Vassili.

so your telling me it is the rc 62-63 range and its a bitch to put an edge on AND its not that tuff...... ......hmmmm. I guess I'm not sold on this one. If it was hard to sharpen but kept an edge forever and was tuff like D2 I might have been interested.

Let me make it clear for you: it was a joke. I don't work for Spyderco and I have no relationship to the Spyderco Company Store. I made a joke because it would be ironic and funny for someone who wants a knife as badly as you seem to want this one to be denied.

Have you ever been in the store when a little kid is holding a candy bar and pulling on his mother's leg screaming "MOMMY MOMMY I WANT IT I WANT IT"? I always think it's funny when the kid doesn't get the candy.

D2 isn't all that "tough" either. It's a tool steel, and when thinned down to a knife edge, it's not like 1095 where you can put a 45 degree bend in it and have it come back true.

I'm saying that it's a bitch, initially, to put an edge on, but if you maintain the edge with a couple strokes on the white rods every day or so, you'll have an extremely sharp, very long lasting, edge.

Aren't hardness and toughness mutually exclusive to some degree? The harder you make a steel the more brittle it is (compared to the same stuff at lower hardnesses) so toughness is probably higher at lower hardnesses.

A bar of 1018 from the hardware store is almighty tough, but it's not very hard and not very wear resistant.

D2 isn't all that tough compared to a number of other common cutlery steels, but it does have good edge holding.

Actually ZDP is 64-65 RC as Spyderco heat treats it as I remember Sal saying. To me it isn't hard to put an edge on at all, but I use diamonds for my coarse stones to set the bevel (between 5-9 degrees per side on my ZDP 189 knives) and I get great sharpness with excellent edge retention from it. The key is grinding in an acute back bevel and using microbevels, and then sharpening almost any steel becomes a fairly short process. If you are trying to rebevel ZDP 189 with an 800 grit ceramic rod you will be frustrated, but using the proper tools for the job will really help.

As for the toughness issue, ZDP 189 is no S7 in toughness, but it sides makes a great steel for serious cutting. It won't make a good chopper, but if you want OK stain resistance with serious edge retention for extended slicing sessions you will love ZDP 189. It gets very sharp and takes very thin high performance edges, and most people that enjoy high sharpness that lasts a long time like ZDP 189.

Was it stupid joke or not - it compromises Spyderco Factory Store for me and it is Sal or other known Spyderco representative to make it clear and to assure that it is still OK.

Personally, I am not buying anything from there until it is cleared.

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. Anyway there is nothing to buy up to he fourth week...

As Pope Julius II was told when he asked, "When will you make an end?"

Michelangelo told him, "When I'm finished!" :)

Patience is a virtue

Really?

You mean to say that you are threatening not to buy another Spyderco product until Sal comes here and explains to you that someone else's comments were a joke, even after that person themself said it was a joke?

Are you related to Brownshoe?

Grow up, Vassili.

Or better yet, go away. You are a disgrace to this entire forum.

Nozh, profit makers like the Manix 2 and Sage II seem to be the proper higher priority knives right now on Golden as they are money makers and are being released. The whole 1000 piece run with the ZDP Mule seems to make it a money loser if anything and a lot of knives to QC with other new releases and the federal customs issues going on. The knife will be out soon enough, and the more you complain won't make it get released any faster. Taking facetious comments of other forum members as official policy statements on the part of the Outlet Store seems way over the top too. I'm sure Sal will alleviate your concerns when he gets his chance, his day job seems to be pretty hectic right now to preclude him from babysitting every thread on all of the forums he frequents. Soon enough you will have your ZDP Mules and be happy.
