Mules are in

WOW, I really need to learn to cord wrap!

I know its not great, but it works. I don't see any big changes in the sharpness after cutting a bunch of boxes today, but I didn't expect any with the hardness rating this steel has.

I started wondering today though, since this is a "mule" knife for testing, is there anywhere to report results to spyderco yet? I know there isn't a need for it yet, but maybe in a few months it would be nice to have something setup specially to send comments to.

Here's mine with a fresh cord wrap handle:

You can find instructions for this style cord wrap on Strider's site. I find it creates a filling and comfortable handle, but slides around a little more than a straight wrap like schiesz's. The handle shape itself seems very comfortable too.

It's a very light, slim knife that I imagine will be an incredible slicer and a perfect light use knife. I'll probably test it against my Mini Manix or Paramilitary this weekend and post up my thoughts.

Now only if Spyderco would do a quick run of scale/sheath kits for those of us interested, but not wanting to send it off for custom jobs. :D

I got mine a couple days ago, but can't post it yet. I'm putting some dyed box elder burl handles on it. I'll post when finished!! If this turns out as well as it looks like it's going to I'm going to have to go for that second one!

Just ordered mine and look forward to getting it. The 52100 steel knives I have owned have taken and kept a wicked edge.

Thanks for the mac-cheese-tuna recipe. After spending so much on knives in the last year, I may have to develop a nifty recipe for dog chow :)

Here is my first attempt at cord wrapping any knife.

After looking at it, I'm not sure the colors match the character of the knife, but what the heck.

And one with a spare Marbles zipper pouch :) (Need to learn kydex making)

Eric, I'm not fond of the handle paracord color, but for a first attempt at cordwrapping, that looks great!
You should get even better results after a bit of practice, like better aligned wrapping and neater ends (you could have concealed the bit of paracord we can see on the first pic near the spyderhole).
I don't think my first try was as good as that, even if I tried easier wrappings at first.

I received my mule today, but I will only be able to open the parcel in about an hour. I may post pics of my wrapping tomorrow, if I get something cool.

Mine just arrived today. I noticed that some are numbered and others aren't, anyone know why?

Are yours numbered ?

I think I remember reading the ones the collector guys got were gonna be numbered....
....."think I remember" being the key words .....
:D

I just ordered mine and can't wait to have it arrive in the mail!!!

BTW - I tried to order the quantity of 2 limit, but the system restricted me to only 1.
Is the limit now reduced to 1 for everyone?

Got mine today. Man this thing cuts! I put a quick and dirty strider style wrap on it. I guess now I could call it a...Stryderco? :D

Does anyone else feel like the thumb ramp is a little too agressive for their taste? I may round it off a little to get a feel I like better.

Well here's a pic. I left a little room at the end of the handle for the Kydex sheath I'm going to make for it.

The first 200 are numbered and go to the collectors. Every new Spyderco run has 200 numbered pieces for the collectors.

If you show up at the Outlet sometimes they have numbered pieces that collectors have elected not to purchase. I got a numbered Mule this way.

Finally, I couldn't go to bed before doing the wrapping.
here's the result, what do you think about this freestyle asymmetrical wrapping?

(and sorry for the bad pictures, all I had handy was my phone)

Love the Evil Dead 2 backdrop! Can you do another with Army of Darkness?

BTW - Nice wrapping job, too!

Regards,
Mike

Mine should be coming soon and I hope to put a wrap handle on them (at least one). I was wondering if there was anyone out there who would be willing to maybe make and sell a kydex sheeth for these things? I am about to move in a few months and don't want to get into learning/setting up for Kydex just yet.

I think Sal mentioned on the Spyderco board that someone was going to make a run of sheathes. I'm going to jump over there to see if there has been any follow up on that front.

thanks for the comments!
If I had a proper version of Army of Darkness, that would be the one on the pic, but all I have is a 2 movies bargain bin DVD of it (with "Return of the living dead" in the same box). Not the most artistic looking background IMHO. When (and if) I make either a kydex sheath or micarta slabs, I'll post a picture with the DVD's of the trilogy out of their box.
That last part of the trilogy is one of my favorite movies. (I also love the moment in Evil Dead 2 when he modifies the chainsaw and shortens his rifle... "groovy!")

now back to the mule discussion, I was at first very surprised with the thinness of the knife, I expected a blade as thin as the caly III (and that's a good point IMO), but a handle that thin is something I didn't think about. The knife is very light, and it cuts very well out of the box.
Scott Gere (spyderco forum member, I don't know if he's here too) seems to make boltaron sheaths for the mule team knife. There are some kydex sheath makers on BFC, but if they don't have a mule too, you'll have to send it to them.

eswartz.....

If I send you mine will you wrap it ? :D :D

That looks great man, I think the best I have ever seen......
