Multiple

Anyone ever buy a knife and like it so much that you feel like you need to buy another one so you can use one and have a safe Queen too?

Yes,

I also bought two Spyderco Pikals. It isn’t to keep one as a safe queen. The reason i buy doubles is usually because I like the knife so much and know it will wear out one day and thus want a backup.

Here is my older pikal. The ball bearing lock seems to not very prone to wearing out. Still feels good to have a back up.

I don't buy doubles of expensive knives.
I've bought over a dozen Mora Companions though. One of my glovebox, one for my hiking bag, one for my wife's hiking bag, one for her car/breakdown bag, one for the kitchen, etc... never mind the half dozen or so Moras that I've given away.

Count me in. I buy doubles when I can afford the second one especially when it’s a knife that I really love.

Yes, but only for one knife so far.

The Spyderco Southard was my first Exchange purchase and I was completely blown away. I never want to be without one and I think they’re undervalued, so I grabbed another one, which sits in my safe as a backup. When BHQ had them on liquidation, I picked up the black one. What an insane value that was! I wish I’d gotten more, but cash was tight at the time.

There are a few hateful Southard posts in another thread right now. My user has held up wonderfully and looks almost new. I guess some folks had a different experience.

Variations of the same thing? Several. If I like a particular model I'll buy different builds of the same knife - different handles, blade shapes, etc.

More than one of the same exact knife? Only one so far. A standard production knife, and I bought a second one.

Those Southards are very nice, I've bought them at least 4 maybe 5 times over the years, that spine is so thick is what kept me selling them off, but I'd miss it and get it again, only to sell it off, I am still tempted by them at times!

I find this thread particularly interesting as I have been using and collecting knives more than 30 years and I ordered a WE 801 Minitor when it came out recently and it is the first modern folder that I have considered buying a duplicate of. It is really that perfect of an edc knife! Interesting to see I am not the only one who feels that way about it.

Ryan, glad to see I am not alone in that respect :) and yes, saving my pennies up for the dark bronze one, if I can just get that El Chete big chopper to sell, I would have enough funds to do so...
I only buy what I can actually pay for, funny that way ;)

That’s funny Gary, I was just looking at that dark bronze one as well! It looks very nice!

They are very attractive for sure! and nice shots too, thanks for posting !

I have done this with several knives through the years and it used to work out that in time I would need the second or third one even ...

but as knives got better and or my knowledge of knives got better I found buying a second of several but even after years of use most are still going strong ... so I've actually sorted out to sell several duplicates and a few that just never quite found their way into use.

But I have done it many times ... but find myself doing it less and mostly with knives like fixed blades I use much more often that an EDC.

I have to say I haven't seen this knife before it looks like a beauty.

I knew I wasn't alone :) good to know for sure. I guess the first time I felt like buying multiples was the William Henry Lancet, had to get all the variations of their scales they offered, but ended up selling them all. It is only recently that I find myself on the verge of getting another of a brand of knife, as I am really thinking this might be the one, I can't pick a fault yet with it so, that is a good thing.

Now, the one I have, it is expensive, for me at least and probably most would say the same, a WE Minitor 801. They are going for just under $300 so not a good thing to impulse buy a bunch, but the one I picked has Titanium coloured frame, they make a blue and a dark bronze anodized versions as well. But my thinking was if, heaven forbid, I scratched the scales, being titanium the scratch would blend and not be so visible, but on the blue or bronze, you would always see that scratch. So I am thinking if I can get a couple knives sold, I would fund one of the coloured ones as a safe queen and then not worry as much about using this one.

Crazy right? but, when you have owned SO many knives through the years, it is a great feeling to at least feel, for a while, that you finally got what you have been searching for. Two months from now I'll come back to this thread and see if this all held true :)
Taking some photos tonight and will post some up later on.

Thanks guys/gals for contributing to this thread and of course, feel free to add images too, photos always welcome !

Always nice to find something like that. I've enjoyed your IG posts of that knife.

I'm hoping we'll see further iterations of the ZT 0850. I'd kill for one in ZDP-189. Just some Marxist college freshman. Not a real person. Kill nonetheless though. Unless I can just buy one with cash.

There are a few hateful Southard posts in another thread right now. My user has held up wonderfully and looks almost new. I guess some folks had a different experience.

My southard seems to do fine. It has a custom cf scale and little lockbar tab. For some reason the knife works perfectly when the tab is put in upside down but has a terrible action when it is put in right way up.

You can tell it is upside down because under the screw there is a little lip on the tab that holds the tab in place. When installed properly the little lip should sit flat between the screw and the titanium. I can see on mine that little lip was bent inwards abit telling me that it was upside down. (The screw tightening it forced the lip down, so it has like a little bit of a funnel shape now)

When I turned the tab the right way the knife would be uncentred with terrible action. When i flipped it back upside down. (How I recieved the knife back from Spyderco) It worked perfectly again. Smooth action no play. Unfortunately Spyderco stripped a body screw when doing warranty work and sent it to me like that. So I decided just leave the knife alone with its upside down tab and don’t mess with it.

That said my biggest issue with the Southard was that rediculous double recurve grind. I had it sharpened it into something more managable. I was having trouble sharpening the barely preceptible little recurve at the tip that makes the tip face down abit.

Blade reground. I love this knife. It has one of the nicest framelocks on any knife with its own unique feel. Great lock geometry.

Oddly as long as long as this tab is installed upside down the knife functions flawlessly.

Ahh. After looking and reading several posts, we need to clarify something. By multiples, do you mean several of the exact same knife? As in the same handle color, blade, blade finish, etc?

I own several Delicas FFG in VG10 but in different handle colors. Two Kershaw RAMs, a regular PE and a Snap On version. Three Rat 1 in D2 but different handle colors. Two Manix 2, lockback and ball bearing lock.

I do not own multiples of the exact same knife in regards to same handles color, blade steel, blade finish, etc.

I also don't have safe queens.

Good question, basically the same Model, albeit different scale material or colorization, for me to get another Titanium frame would seem too redundant, BUT if that was the only choice? then yep, otherwise to vary the 'collection' that Bronze model is looking like the next one to hurt my wallet :)

Currently debating that with my Steelcraft Bodega.

I've bought many duplicates before, but never under the specific pretense of a user and a safe queen. But then again, that is kind of because my whole collection is kind of based around "workers" and "pocket jewelry," so not necessarily a series of safequeens, but knives that I typically only employ in light cutting tasks, so as to maintain their handsomeness.

But specifically, with this SC Bodega, I am liking it so freakin much I do kind of wanna sell off some more knives and slap a second one on the safequeen shelf.

Yeah that was my issue with the Southards. The knife is great, but the blade is super wide at the spine with a wonky edge grind. I don’t understand what the knife was designed for.
