Multiple

my wife always buys me a knife for our anniversary that she engraves herself with a joke or a saying or a cool verse.
They’re the only “safe queens” I have.
It’s kinda funny seeing the evolution of the quality over the years.

I always buy a 2nd knife that matches and carry those so I don’t tear up the ones she gives me.

I don’t want to derail G2’s thread, but I’d love to see some of those inscribed knives. Maybe in one of the picture threads?

I've bought multiples of a few knives so I have a spare for the inevitable day the first one is no longer servicable. Mostly for worry that the model is discontinued and hard to find the day that happens, hopefully many, many years later.

I have 6 or 7 SAK Soldiers and 3 or 4 Pioneers. All basically the same knife. My plan was to collect all major variants of the Pattern 61 Swiss Army knife. I have most of them. I only carry one or two out of the whole group.

The only other knife I own doubles of is a CRKT Prowler. One of my all-time favorite knives. Discontinued years ago.

I actually almost bought the CF version of this crazy thing. It was in the cart multiple times, but each time I decided to sleep on it, and managed to go one more day. I really don't know why, but I just groove it. Interesting to just sit and look at. Absolutely perfect action. Smooth throw, locks tight, no play, and falls shut. And the blade shape....Well it actually excelled at all of my office and warehouse duties. It is already very light, but tempted to see what the same thing would be like with an instant 25% weight cut. Not to mention that I really like carbon fiber also. But alas, I'm still in a one Eschaton camp.

Without even thinking too hard, I can come up with several that I bought multiples of, although none were meant to be safe queens. My TC & NF Barlows immediately come to mind, along with several old Case XX Barlows. Two Spyderco Manix 2s & the two PM 2s. Two #66 stockmans. Three SAK Alox Cadets, (different colors.) And the latest, a couple Churchills:

The hard thing would be to pick one, carry it and use it, as it is often said on this forum, life is pretty short...

OK, after some thought, you convinced me. I bought a second Les George Galvos dagger in CTS XHP, AND I ordered a Double Universal Blade Rig from Ben Tendick for the knives, which I will carry when I think I need the extra security. Also I'll go back to carrying my ZT 0900 when I don't feel the need for any security just to have a flipper on me.

I think about buying a backup for my favorites from time to time, but I've never done it. For some reason, knives I'm not putting to use -- or at the very least stashing somewhere specific against possible use, like in the glove compartment or my bugout bag -- make me sad.

This ties into why I've sold so many favorites over the last couple years: If I'm not using them, I want them to be in the hands of someone who will appreciate them (in whatever way they wish, including as safe queens or whatnot).

I don't really do safe queens much, I just have so many knives that a lot of them don't get carried much.

I do carry a Spyderco Southard frequently though, and I have seven or eight of them currently. I keep them all wearing different scales, and I have more scales than Southards so I rotate them occasionally. Here are a sampling:

It's a screwy knife. The blade is too thick, and the stupid hole in the blade annoys me--I love Spyderco, don't get me wrong, but why fugly up the blade on a flipper with a pointless hole? That said, it carries great and it makes me happy when I'm using it, so I have no shame about owning piles of them.

Alternative way of opening.

I have dozens of Spyderco knives, I get what the hole in the blade is for in general. I'm just saying it's not that useful on the Southard flipper. The smallish buried hole is pretty awkward compared to most Spyderco knives. I like the hole plenty on my Manix 2 knives, for example, but I think it's absolutely pointless on the Southard.

I sold all of my multiples. It was keeping me from trying other blades.
I might pick up another 940-1 if I run across a good deal.

It depends on what you mean by doubles. But I bought a Northwoods (GEC made) in Elephant ivory and a regular scale offering of the same knife with the intention of not using the ivory one. That is not a classic double, but it is a safe queen for all practical purposes. Will I ever sell it? Who knows.

Other than that, I have purchased two GEC Improved Trappers (#48) with different scales. Like that knife a lot, but they were purchased to use whether or not I do use them.

The only true double I have purchased is with Victorinox knives that I really like and have a spare ready to substitute for the one I regularly carry if something happens to it. I in fact have like 4 of my favorite model and all are the same.

Now, I only buy knives that I believe I may use and nothing is tucked away for some collector reason. I just have too many knives to use and probably 75% never get used to cut anything.

I don't think that any knife will be so nice I'll buy it twice. But if you told me that there's variations on the knife, whether in size or blade steel, I will hunt down the whole family lol. I have the Cold Steel Recon 1 series (regular, mini, micro), and I will probably fall down the PM2/3 rabbit hole, but until then, I will be happy picking up the s110v versions next year.
