My BOTM

I see you got the wifes bath towel out again.... :D

Cool knife, I see it is one of those -110- or "double dash" 110's.

Knifeschmied,

That is the towel of my li'l doughter. She sometimes give it to me when I take pic's of my knives.

I'm lucky to get my second doble dash knife jet.

Haebbie,
Nice looking 124. What are those scales made of? Are they a 2nd cut stag or some kind of synthetic like micarta?
Mike

Mike, yes, I like that knife too. The Handle is synthetic, but I don't know what. It is no corian and I don't believe that it is micarta, because it has no structure. I hope that Joe knows what it is.

FWIW, Blades says that for a time Buck offered handles made of white Melamine resin material. They discontinued that option when they found that the handles tended to crack in cold climates.

However, it's unclear whether this applied to the 124.

Knifeschmied, my li'l daughter ist nearly vour (4!) jears old an she slices her bread with a razorsharp 15 inch butcher knife. She has a lot of understanding for my knife fever and a lot of fun when I use her towel for the pic's. So it is well done to retract your jab, otherwise she will become angry with you. :D :D  :) :)

Haebbie

Haebbie, I have 4 and 6 yr old daughters and it is a wicked thing when they are angry! I don't need your daughter angry at me too! Must be that Bavarian blood in them.... :D

Bavarian???? My daughter has no bavarian blood. Yours have?

Melamin, that's possible. Aganist that: The handle material is more softish than the melamine I know for coating funitures. Also the handle colors tends clear to yellow.

That Buck discontinued that option when they found, that the handles tended to crack in cold climates. I don't think that it applies to the 124. A long Time ago Joe posts about the white handle 124, that Buck made appx. 250 of them, delivered to the European market. I don't believe that they send knives overseas when they know that they crack.

Best,
Haebbie

I was refering to my ancestry and made an assumption on yours....

:D :D Knifeschmied, that's an idea! Text out of a Russian encyclopedia: The Bavarians are dark-haired, short statured, predatious mountain people. I grew up in Bavaria and I can't confirm that. How are your experiences?

Best,
Haebbie

I'm sure that you're correct Haebbie. As I look into it further I believe the white melamine handles date from the early to mid 60's. And I'm not sure that Buck even made the 124 during that period?

Also, once aware of the problem I believe Buck was quick to discontinue the option. Which makes finding a knife with those handles pretty difficult. And this usually translates into pretty valuable.

I wish I could find one. :(

Mike, it is not impossible to find one. In the meantime I have two of them and I don't need two. But I like to have a red handle 124. The red ones were sold in U.S. and not in Europe. So it is nearly impossible to find one here. Just otherwise to the white one in the U.S. If you find a red one for me, you can have one of the whites - if you like.

Best Regards,
Haebbie

I'm not a really up to speed on the 124's. I only have 2, a pre-86 nib cocobolo(?) and a 2006 stag. Is the red one that you're referring to, the burgundy micarta?

Yes, Mike, burgundy micarta, that is it. Except the white ones I have the 2006 stag, the coconut ;) and, may be, that I get it, the black phenolic. Now I'm missing the red one.
