My damn RTAK broke!

any knife can have flaws. production, custom, popular and unpopular *coughCS* (J/K :D ).

why wait until you really need it to find out? test and check your steel! (unless it's a safe queen).

I finally got around to calling Ontario and the lady told me to ship it back. She didn`t ask how it broke, although I volunteered the information, she just said it shouldn`t have broken.
The Becker Brute is still cherry. I have been using my Ontario RAT7 for batoning, as I have been using smaller diameter logs.
The Cold Steel Shovel continues to amaze me. It is so damn sharp that when chopping small (1 inch or less) branches off of trees that it just sails right through them.
When I went looking for dead wood for the fire this week, I only took my bow saw and the shovel with me. It makes short work of branches.

My grandfather would laugh at you. If he had purchased the knife, he'd probably put you over his knee and warm your behind.

My grandfathers and all of my uncles abused knives far, far worse than this. They all see them as disposable tools on the farm, and couldn't care less about them. All they cared about was getting the job done, and that was it.

I just saw this post. Sorry to hear about your RTAK. It shouldn't have happened, period. Wished I could say more, but it's best that I don't comment on any of the issues surrounding this.

I can say this about RAT Cutlery Company (For those who don't know, RAT Cutlery is a different company than those who build the RTAK, RAT-7, RAT-5, TAK, RAT-3, etc. that we designed): At RAT Cutlery we have a no questions asked warranty. Period. That means no matter what happens if you break it or screw it up, we replace it. No need for a warranty card, proof of purchase, etc. Warranty goes with the knife so it is transferable for as long as the knife is in existence. We've sold thousands of knives since we began a little over a a year ago. We have replaced 3 knives total since we started RAT Cutlery. Of those 3, only one of them was a broken knife. Shon Rowen's heat treat of 1095 is the best in the industry. Not saying you can't break our knives... you can, but they will take a lot of stress before going into meltdown. Take a look at our video on our site for more about our heat treating process.

As I said before, I have no problem with Ontario,....yet.
The lady I talked to just said to send it in.
It sounded like they were standing behind it.
Time will tell.
It wasn`t my intention to start an anti Ontario thread and I would appreciate it not turn into one.
BTW, I had no idea RAT Cutlery was producing an RTAK, or I would have bought one.

Dave

RAT Cutlery is not producing an RTAK as of right now. I don't think anybody is saying anything anti Ontario, Jeff was merely stating that his company was not responsible for the production of that knife, despite his name on it.

I am sure Ontario will do the right thing.

Neither of MY Grandfathers were like that, although I have an uncle we`re not sure about.

Man, I really did break out laughing with that one! :D

As a grandfather myself, I would say, " Looks like a p##s poor heat treat. Best you be sending that one back!"

Seasoned Ironwood is tough! I chipped out an Ontario machete trying to clear out an Ironwood limb next to my deer stand one time, and the hatchet that I also had with me that was chopping well on sapplings seemed to almost just bounce off the Ironwood limb!I ended up sawing it off!

New RTAK or not, I still want a blade I can depend on for batoning. Wadda ya`ll thing of the Ontario SP8?
I believe it`s thicker than the RTAK, made of 1095, and I don`t need the pointed blade that the RTAK features.
Plus the price is right.
Any SP8 owners help me out here?

Dave

I thought they were both 1/4”. Now I understand the RTAK II is 4.7625mm whereas the RTAK I is 6.35mm. Making the RTAK II thinner by 1.5875mm.

Pure speculation –

The SP8 / SPAX has a saw back that I don't imagine will do your baton any good. The SP8/SPAX has a pronounced bevel that I would expect to drive through less well. The actual cutting edge of the SP8/SPAX is very estranged from the handle.Compared to the RTAK I suspect that would make it much harder to control. Last, despite being rubber rather than micarta the handle of the SP8/SPAX is a kind of ovoid in section which I'd bet is much worse for control than the RTAK too. Finally, and I'm very uncertain of this, but the SP8/SPAX seems so have much less stock at the tang.

Long overdue update alert.
(I was computerless through most of the winter)
Ontario replaced my busted RTAK II quickly and painlessly, and I'm ashamed to say that my Becker Brute's virtue is still intact.

Sorry for bringing back an old thread, but I wanted to let those know who were curious that Ontario stood by their product.

Dave

That is good to hear and glad you have a new knife! I personally will never by an Ontario produced product with the RAT name on it, but I will consider buying other Ontario products. The new partnership between Justin (Ranger Knives) and Ontario is providing a ready source of the infamous ranger knives. The RD-9 will provide a bomb-proof large chopper knife that, having the same quality as Justin's own ones did, will survive anything.

You might as well give that new RTAK some hell and let us know how it works too. No point in babying a big chopper knife is there?
