My damn RTAK broke!

Beg to differ, rather thought this represented some good, educational reading. Again, as I've said before: avail yourself of an axe when you want some real chopping/splitting power and you won't have to shed tears over an obliterated blade.

If you just insist on smacking your knife, get something akin to post #33. Also, Ontario is a superb company and should stand by any product they make. Not sure what action to take with the RAT line.

It is certainly possible to break a perfectly made knife by improper batoning !!! For that type of break a strike with the baton that is not centered to the blade will put great stresses in the blade --BANG !
The baton must be perpendicular to the blade !!

batoning is abuse of a knife, and rarely needs to be done. If you think you'll need to be chopping, take an axe. Better yet, have a saw and save the danger, pointless work and noise of chopping.

I don't consider it abuse. I have never broken a blade batoning and a baton hundreds of rounds a year. I feel safer doing that than swinging an axe around all the kids that come to our camps. Obviously we use blood circle but small kids run around and I can keep an eye on what I am doing and be all to respond quickly easier batoning than swinging an axe where I have to focus more on what I am doing.

I swing an axe a lot also. But usually I do that at home in the yard and split all the big stuff before going to camp.

But I see each will have preference based on experience and what is successful for him or her

No you can't borrow my knife. That said, many people baton for enjoyment, skills practice and out of necessity. I respect that. But you still can't borrow my knife.

I have pounded my D2 steel RAT 7 through a lot of wood, with no issues. Stuff does happen though.
