My ideal carry knife...

; I just find a sharp edge indispensable. I can make do with most anything, so I favor single blade slipjoints for their reduced bulk and weight. Give it natural covers too, I dislike synthetics on old-timey knives.
I subscribe to this philosophy. Single blade and natural materials. I do like a good stainless steel though.
My most carried is this 4" John Lloyd trapper in CPM-154. I found this on the secondary market. I could have easily commissioned this exact knife.

Welcome! :D

I can't say that only one is my "ideal" carry.
My EDC is a Buck 110 or 112 or 877 on my belt, along with a Stockman, and a 4 blade Scout knife in my pocket.
OH YEAH!!!! I almost forgot! I put an Old Timer 12OT in the pocket inside my Army field/baseball cap, so I have that as part of my EDC now, too. :)

I'd say the awl/punch on the Scout knife is my most used "blade" lately. There is a bumper crop of sandburrs to dig out of my bicycle, trike, and trailer tires this year. :(
I hate to think how many of those daRn things I'd be digging out if I actually left the pavement.

A square end stockmen, 4” or just under, with clip main, wharncliff and pen secondaries. And the wharncliff and pen reversed ends from normal (kinda like buck has done) to make them both open right handed. I actually had it built (with the added lockback main blade, which I am glad I did!).

Yeah....this. Followed by a Case Bose cattle knife or the new stockman recently released. I'm looking forward to the forum knife because that's about as close as I'm going to get...plus it's made by my favorite manufacturer. There's also Peregrin's amber stag Lanny's clip that I wouldn't mind having....

Of the knives I currently own, my custom Buck 501 is probably on the top of my list.

I've been carrying this knife almost exclusively for a couple of years now. This one was an experiment and I hollow ground the blade, all the others are flat ground. I think flat ground is better in this blade shape. 5.25" oal with a 2 inch blade, AEB-L stainless @62RC. AEB-L at this hardness will give you a screaming sharp edge that ya'll have for a long time and is very easy to resharpen. I can and often do use my knives hard and have not found it wanting. I mean I have a hammer, I have a screwdriver, I have an axe, I have a chainsaw when I want to slice something and its often throughout the day, I use this guy. The wife has one too. Horizontal crossdraw is how we both carry.

My ideal would be a GEC #38 with a clip main and pen secondary in CPM154 or better steel. Unfortunately it does not and never will exist. I'm hoping the BF 2018 knife will come close for me after my disappointment with the BF 2015 knife to fill that role.

I love the Beer Scout. A sheepsfoot blade is my favorite EDC shape, the caplifter/screwdriver/scraper/prybar/etc is super handy, the easy open notch is convenient, and various other things about it that work. My only issue is it feels ever so slightly bulky in my watch pocket. If there was a Beer Scout on a GEC 14 frame I think it would be my ideal knife.

Dang did you do all that leather work?

I keep coming back to look at this knife. I am smitten. I couldnt carry that everyday its just to beautiful.

Welcome to the porch. After all the knives I have tried through the years I have settled on the peanut for most of my cutting needs. My peanut has been everywhere I have in the almost 2 years I have had it and I love it more each day I use it.

Yes sir. Its what we do, besides making knives. The wife did the flower carving on the leggings and her belt. Ya might like this one over in Sheaths and Such:

And they are very good at what they do. I have a knife, sheath and holster from Dave and they are all top notch. One of my favorite knives and my favorite holster. After I make a little extra, I want him to make a sheath for my most carried fixed and a mag pouch.

I almost NEVER carry just one knife, but if I absolutely had to keep just one, it would be a GEC #53 Cuban Stockman with their regular clip, sheepfoot and pen blades in M390 stainless @ 61 HRc, with bark ram's horn covers.

Wow.
Looks like 'THE' perfect knife in my eyes as well!
...we I guess the quest is on.
Thanks for posting it.

I like the stockman pattern and specifically the case 6375. One of the Bose premium Stockmans with Elmax 20CV or M390 with some nice barky stag would be perfect. Also like the GEC #81 natural stag Stockman would carry one of those everyday if I ever spot one idc how much it costs it will be mine.

I could spend forever going on with asthetics and preferences, so I'll just throw those out the window and go simply with what works for me

For that it would have to be the Victorinox recruit.

There's a great deal of capability in this compact package, and it gets a lot done.
If I had to pick just one ideal knife this could be it, though I love other knives I own and hope that never happens.

Pretty much what I yearn for too! Or a slightly smaller Pen type knife with 154 or Sandvik, no brass either except perhaps the pins.

A single blade Barehead 92 Talon with long pull Spear, Rat-Tail bolster, propeller shield or bowtie/gimp. Smooth Bone, peachseed if jigged, Ram's Horn alternatively. Again, all stainless.

GEC has the patterns, imagination, certainly the skill/high finish, all they need to do is buy a new machine that can cut out modern stainless without any anxiety....plus the will :D

Here's an old Hoffritz Serp Pen, about 3.5" with sunk joints. Forget about the Sabre grind I dislike them, add perhaps Rat-Tails or Tip bolsters.. but this comes close. Can I find anybody to make it for me? Not so far...
