Yaaaaaaay! A separate grinding room is surely going to be a time saver. Having to clean an area every time you want to do some clean work is totally frustrating. I know because I make fishing lures and when I am all done profiling and such (balsa/cedar dust everywhere) I have to spend about half an hour to forty five minutes cleaning my workspace... uggghhh.

I bet you've walked that deck a ton, planning where everything will go. What type of roof will it have? I ask because when we built mine I made sure I could use the space up there to store wood and leather, and other misc. stuff. Also when or if you do get into forging you can add a lean-to on a side to house the forge and anvil. Plus it makes a great place to store steel. Leave the floor space in your shop more open and safer. I will try to get pics this week of mine and post them for you if you want. I found looking at others set-ups to be a big help in arranging the space. Although if you are like most that have shops you will arrange and rearrange and do it several times before you are satisfied. But its just so much fun to be able to do it. I am real excited for you.

Please....frequent WIP pix,as this grows!

Really,really proud for you,Daniel.

Right on Daniel. Pease keep the WIP pics coming.

One question - are you so over the outdoors you don't want windows?

Nice! I like progress pics like this, looks like a great start.
Thanks! I'll keep you guys posted, we got snowed out today but it will be up soon!

Looks like your new shop is gonna be fantastic. Love the work in progress shop pics
Much appreciated! It will rock.

Thanks Kaleb! The separate room will be excellent, I plan on hooking up a dust collector to everything... it will be much cleaner especially where it needs to be.

I was thinking of making lures, I tied flies as a kid. I used to have all the cool old school wooden lures, the Hula Popper even! Lol I lost 'em fishing! Cool stuff...

Looking good.you won't know how to act when you can work and not freeze
Thanks! It will be nice being warm! My machinery will appreciate it as well. :D

You know I have! I have places layed out for everything in my head and on paper, it is cool seeing it come together. 12x24 seems big to me! I do plan on a porch/smithy area for sure. I may heat treat outside as well to keep the oily smoke down. Post up some pics of your shop, I want to see them!

man cave!
Exactly! I need a mini fridge! I may have my drums.amps/guitar gear in the corner and some comfy chairs... a stereo and maybe a TV, lol I can live there!

Much appreciated Gnarly! I'll be sure to get pics each day of progress! :D

Thanks! I will have a big window on the sunnier side of the shop. More would be nicer but it will be easier to heat this way. I also want a porch, lol maybe with a couch or outdoor furniture and a table on it. I may modify it later with more doors or windows, it won't be too bad being stick built.

Actually most if not all modern windows are better insulators than the walls around them...

Southernmost exposure!

Exactly! I don't get any direct sun most of the winter because I live on the north face of a steep mountain but I noticed somehow my shop gets a bit of direct sunlight around mid day, I was super excited to see this! I have cut plenty of massive pine trees in effort to get some sun but I'd have to blast the top of the mountain off to get any, lol!!! :D On the other hand I own 10 acres of the mountain, my land starts about 100 feet up it and goes to the very top, you have to climb a steep hill next to a sheer rock cliff face then you hit the National Forest!

skylights?

also I might be wrong about the windows being better insulators... I think a better statement would have been "some windows are better than the wall around them." I haven't looked at windows much, but I do believe it is a function of their price....

Makes sense to me, a sticker on it mentioned the window improved heating efficiency. We freeze in the place I have now but I rented a passive solar house for a while here and we barely even had to heat the place.

Y'all may need to stay in the shop while you re-fit your house, lol.

Lol, exactly! Actually it's not too bad, just in a really bad spot for winter weather. My next place will be on the south face if it is on a mountain!

It has been snowing non-stop for maybe 3 days now and the storm is supposed to be about over with, hopefully the contractor will be out tomorrow. We got a bunch of snow, then huge hail, then rain so the snow was as heavy as could be, I bet there will be plenty of avalanches this year... that icy base just sets them up. Yesterday I plowed our road so the neighbors must be happy! I do a lot of the plowing and snowblowing and they pay for the front end loader if we get a bad snow.

I'm so excited!
