My new shop! coming soon...

Worried about snowload, brotherMan. Based on KY experience! and from helping Dad & my B'rers build pole barns, from age 8 to age 30.

At least every other rafter needs at least a 2 X 4 from top of one wall plate to the other ,at ceiling height, to prevent spraddling out under load.

That would form a 'truss', and anything triangulated is exponentially stronger.

Plus, you could use your scrap lumber to "floor" your new "loft".

JMO,

looking good mang.
Thanks, I'm psyched!

Great point! I'm not doing the framing but I know what you mean, the guy building it knows about our snow load and priced it accordingly so I'll have to see what he does. I used to do some construction but this one has to be inspected and I don't really know building code that well so I hired a guy to do it... he is amazing and has done all you see in 2 days by himself! I think I just caught him before the trusses are getting put in. (lol I hope)

Our snow load here is pretty nuts, every few years when we get a really bad winter my entire house gets covered to the top! So far the weather has been great considering it is December.

Thanks for watching out for me Gnarly!

Please post total cost of this build when you are done. I am very interested in having something like this done in the future when I can get my own land.

It's looking like a shop!

Looks like a shop to me. What will you be using for lighting? And how much power are you running out to it?

This thread needs a freakin LIKE button!
Thanks Gnarly!

Much appreciated, I am very happy so far.

Not sure as far as amperage goes but I will have an electrician out next week to see. I am capable of doing almost all the wiring but not too sure about the exact construction code details. I'm hoping for at least 50 amps. I have to run the 2350 watt 230 volt kiln and the KMG which has a 66# 2hp motor!

For lighting I will have a lot of mixed lighting. It will be bright in there! If I can I'll have bulbs and tubes in the ceiling as well as side lighting in the grinding room and finishing area (to see scratches easier) I will also have a dedicated light for each piece of equipment. Currently I have a halogen outdoor style floodlight /spotlight setup above my grinder, it is super bright and between the 2 bulbs I get great focused and diffused light. I believe great shop lighting is important.

Looking great Dan.
I can just hear Mrs. Fairly yelling "Daniel!Get your butt in the house!" cuz you're not gonna want to leave your new shop.
I'm thinking you better save some room for the Mrs. leather working too.

Lol good advice! She has a desk for lampworking, leatherwork and making sterling silver jewelry inside that we will move out there... it may stay inside for a while because of our baby on the way (lol someone must be inside) but eventually we need the room inside for our kiddo. That is one reason we have the shop going up, we need the room in our house too. My place is only about 900 square feet and it is filled with knifemaking and lapidary gear. :D

It's going to rock!

Lighting sure is important and it sounds like you have that covered. I ran 100 amps to my set-up. However, i needed that much because I have a bunch of woodworking equipment (its a full cabinet shop). I put ten 8 ft. flourescent fixtures as well as individual lamps on the tools. I am out there more than I am in the house. We built the shop because we ran out of room in the house and filled up a 8x12 storage shed after our daughter was born. With the shop and all the covered areas I have attached to it, for the forge and storage, its now bigger than my house lol. It works out though because the family always hangs out there with me. I have a fully stocked fridge, surround sound for the stereo and the 32 in. TV, heat for the winter and a crap load of fans for the summer. If I had a cot and a bathroom I probably wouldn't leave ever. Can't wait to see yours man.

Wow that sounds killer! I'm putting in a stereo and my old TV for entertainment, I need a place for the TV and a good stereo is a must! Right now my next big purchases will be a dust collector and metal cutting band saw. I have an oil heater but will need a couple, one for each room.

I'm going to see on the amperage, 100 amps would be killer!

I don't recommend much from Harbor Freight but their dust collector is great. I can even send you a 20% off coupon for it. Its 2 hp and takes a 20 amp breaker and is 110 volt. The only negative is it can't be run on 220 ( that's what I try to run all my tools on). I understand from another site that it is made in the same plant as Jet tools and they look the same. I can also attest to the HF 4x6 horizontal/verticle bandsaw. Its 1 hp and with good blades it is awesome. I picked mine up about 6 months ago on sale and with a coupon for $183. For heat I use an old dearborn gas heater. I just connect it to the propane from the forge and its nice and toasty in no time.
Mitch Wilkins uses the same bandsaw as mentioned above and he even cuts his handle material with it. I have a 14 in. Jet with a riser for resawing wood, so my other bandsaw only sees metal. And make sure you get good cutting fluid (mike-o-cut is what I recommend). It will extend the life of the blade and drill bits more than just oil.
Well I will check in later. Its time to go shape handles and watch football.

Daniel, she does sterling silver? I have a weakness for sterling silver ;) Man, you guys are going to end up taking all my money!

Football... that's the one reason I wish we got a tv signal here! Football rules...

Cool you mentioned that dust collector, I was looking at that one and the big one from Grizzly. I don't know much about them, do they work well with metal? I think dust collection is crucial. Even with my full face respirator a long day of grinding g10 really gets to me.

Nice to hear on the saw too, I have heard they sometimes need initial adjustment but can't be beat for the money.

I'll have to try that fluid, I just use the tapping fluid from the local hardware store and wasn't too impressed. (lol usually use water for drilling!)

Glad you mentioned the 20 amp outlet, I should do all 20 amp for the 120. I usually do when I wire stuff myself, lol I wired my last shop with 10 gauge to the outlets!

Thanks for the help! I'm always looking for the best deals on good equipment. I'd take you up on that coupon but it will be a while before I can use it.

Yes, we need to get the jewelers bench back up and running but will soon, she makes earrings and lots of wire jewelry. We used to sell sterling jewelry and stones we cut for a living. We are still learning to solder for bezel set jewelry, it would be great to be able to set the stones we cut. With the new shop we will finally have the room to really get going on it all!

Morning. I get those coupons every month. If I have more than one large item I need, I go in buy one with the coupon, then put it in he car, go back and buy the other one right after. They have never said no, so I figure it is done a lot. Let me know when your getting close to the time and I can send a couple out to you. The dust collector works fine for metal, you just can't use the bags that come with it. I have set it up to go through a metal trash can. There are plenty of examples online about how to do it. I guess I got lucky on my saw. The only adjustment I had to do is the table it comes with. It is pretty flimsy.

I ran 15 amp for a good amount in my shop, I put in 20 amp on a couple of circuits that see more tool use. I actually wired my entire shop with 12 gauge, because an electrician friend brought me some off a large job. That saved a ton of money there.

I really am excited about your shop. I can talk about them all the time, and tools, don't get me started. I think it is as addictive as knifemaking. I always tell my friends that the key to a good marriage is the guy has to have a shop. It can be a garage, a shed, a carport , or anything that allows him to get out of the house. I let the wife and daughter have the house and they can do what they want (except floral sheets, I hate those things), I have my shop. Its a great arrangement.

Hey Thanks I'll have to let you know. I'll look into the trash can for the filter, I must get one!

I think you are right about the shop, it is great to have an outlet. Lol floral sheets!!!

I hope to have an electrician over tomorrow, we need to figure out where the power will come from then it's wiring time!
