Ok so after reading much info in here on what makes a good wilderness knife and making some personal choices on what I do and do not want my knife to do I made a deal for this lovely gem. I took the advise that a good wilderness knife need not have a finger guard. I'm gonna give this idea a try and see what I think. Many prefer a knife that is around 1/8th... I can't do that... I need a little more meat... but I've decided that carving fine intricate wood crafts is just not something I need my knife to do. But doing basic wilderness survival task is something I want... so I decided on a blade that is 3/16ths and about 5" long. It's a Busse of course. Just wanted to see if anyone else has used one of these in the wilderness and to see how it performed. I haven't even gotten mine yet... but I'm looking forward to it.

IMO that is the best of all the Busse's for all general outdoor use. Nice score.

Looks good & hope it serves you well. As for me Busse ar way out of my price range for a knife :p I like my Breedens just fine, they are sharp as a lightsaber & tough as Superman :D & bryan will do what he can to make the knife to your needs

Nice score you got there mate, now the tough bit is to not buy more Busse blades. All mine are users and i'm up to about a dozen! Just can't say no it seems.

I've got a SAR5 and it's a great feeling having this knife when i'm in the woods. Very sturdy feeling blade as with all Busses. I did need to spend a couple of hours getting the edge to a decent sharpness.

My only negative, and it is a personal thing not a reflection of the knife, is that it is handle heavy. I would have preferred the balance point to be further forward of the handle. I am at this point considering removing the handle slabs to allow me to skeletonize the handle.

Have you checked out all the mods that have been done to the SAR5 Steel-Junky? Do a quick search over on the Busse forum and you'll quickly see a few options.

That seems to have an accidental similarity to the below offering from Tops. I wonder which came first.

I care for neither company but I'll admit I did think the Busse below looked like a practical handful. Vivi thinned it out and convexed it. As depicted it is the most useful looking knife I've seen from that stable.

The SAR5 is a solid knife (I bought 2 during Busse's 'ganza), but the edge that it came with is more for chopping than cutting/slicing. You won't be able to do many standard chores with that until you thin the edge down a bit. That huge grip may also need a bit of reprofiling before it becomes comfortable.

That knife is the exact basic pattern that I would like to get ahold of. I prefer a dropped edge design as well.

My only problem with the Busse's so far is cost. The nly SAR5's I've run accross on the forum so far have averaged around 270.00 which is more than I can swing right now.

My only problem with the Tops Pasayten Light is the steel used. The 154cm is from what I understand a copy of ATS34. Which is a steel which never really impressed me.

You've got a great knife there which should be a blast to use in the woods.

I sanded the handle down on mine with some wet/dry sandpaper. I think it helped. A convex edge would also really aid in the performance of the knife.

Great knife. I really like mine.

I would like to own a Busse one day. If that ever happens it will be that one you posted and a FBM.

I would convex it and strip the coating off.

Either way, I think you got a great knife there!

Check out the knife mods thread bro. Theres a SAR5 in there that is freakin amazing!!!!

I had one a while back, and they re great knives. I prefer my BATAC, but the SAR is an awesome blade. Id strip her down, thin and convex the edge, and beat the crap out of it!

They aren't cheap... but what I've made solid in my mind is that though pricey they are the last knife of a particular type you'll ever need. Busse has the most solid warranty of any knife company I've ever dealt with. If it tears up.. they fix it... no matter what. I think they even replaced a knife once for someone that broke his Busse trying to see what it would take to break the dang thing. I've met Jerry in past dealings and at Blade in Atlanta and he's a man's man. Good guy, good company, bullet proof warranty.

I've been admiring that design from afar for a while. Weren't there plans to make a SAR4? or did I make that up?
A 4" blade is more my speed.

Oh trust me... I'm there with ya... I got a stack of Busse Knives... I just got this one to fit that wilderness only need. When I get it I'm gonna go ahead and strip that coating. I find the Busse coating to be VERY durable... but it causes a little drag on the blade when cutting through wood and stuff... almost like tires getting traction. But I think a strip and light polish will have this thing zipping through wood and vegetation.

The coating will come off... I've never been a big fan of convex edges though. I like something I can sharpen with just my ceramic sticks in the field. If I'm not mistaken you gotta strop a convex edge with varying grits of media. Too much gear to drag around.
