Mystery GAW/Challenge

I'm in, Mike, and thanks for the great GAW. I have enough (well, close to enough) knives, so I'm playing for @Modoc ED . I am lucky to have plenty of Schatt & Morgan, Queen City, and Queen Cutlery knives, but I don't carry them a lot, tending more toward Cases and SAKs. So, I'm going to tote this Queen #31 large congress from 1961-1971, shown here with my tote for today, a red bone Canal Street Cutlery "Pinch". It's 4" closed and rides really well in the pocket (as I remember). Slim with 1 spring loading two handy blades. I happen to have 7 of these in Winterbottom (or Frontier, as Queen dubbed it later) bone, but I promise to carry only this one and not switch out, so as to hew to the rules.

First day with the Opinel #8 as my only cutter. Began the day by breaking down beer boxes after an impromptu Wiffle Ball tournament.

The Opinel sailed through it like butter. Next was preparing a couple of Sunday meals, a tradition for my girlfriend and I. First was smoked sausage with red potatoes and green beans (which is better as leftovers anyway :) ). No issues slicing.

Works as a butter knife too:

Next the main meal, ribeyes and garden salad. Effortless slicing for the salad:

And sailed through the steak:

None the worse for wear after that, and the patina is starting.

So far so good, it is an amazing slicer. Thanks Mike for the kick in the rump I needed to try this out. It is incredibly light weight too. I can already tell I am not going to be crazy about the patina, so I may force it during the week. It needs a lanyard.

As I started the day today carrying my Grohmman slimline I though that if I chose a nickname for it it would help the "bonding process" :D
I bought the knife in Nova Scotia where it is made in the small and picturesque town of Pictou.
Nova Scotians are sometimes called "Bluenosers" ..... so "Bluenose" it is :):D

So the first order of business today for Bluenose and I was to go out and say hi to our Canadian chickadee friends, we though it may amuse some CrazyCanuck out there :D

Well I took a look and the decision was really not hard, my decision may not have been the right one but it was easy to make :D

This Case 6208 was by far my most carried knife of 2018 in fact it was definitely my 2018 knife of the year.
Well It was unintentionally pushed out of my pocket last year by my Texas Jack if only for the CV blades and Amber jigged bone I fell so in love with.
It went from being my most carried knife to I can't remember the last time I've carried it, and that needs to change.
I just may give it more than a week.

Boy I tell ya, if case made one of these half whittler's in CV Amber jigged bone I think my brain might explode.

That's the question, Paul. Not an easy choice. :)

I've got mine picked out. I've been intrigued by the Case Small Texas Jack, but there was always another knife I wanted to get first, and I've never gotten around to it. Well, I figure it's time we get to know each other and see if we get along like I think we will.

Since Andy (@mqqn) has already entered with his choice, I'll join from now too. Case Small Texas Jack is sharpened up, joints are oiled, and in pocket it goes for the first time, and for the duration. Official start isn't until Monday morning, but I'm getting a head start ;)

Great interest so far, and I can't wait to see everyone's choices!

You'll definitely love that 62032 medium Texas Jack, it was my number one last year and still one of my all time favorites.
It inadvertently pushed the previous years number one out of my pocket so I don't even know the last time said knife was carried. ( Said knife was a 6208 half whittler which I chose for this GAW )

5K Qs 5K Qs you didn't tell us what you were going to be carrying. ;)
Thanks for the invitation to join in the fun of your creative and generous GAW, Mike! :):thumbsup:

As you probably know, I slavishly follow my weekly rotation schedule for which knives to carry each week. A major goal of my doing that is so that I avoid having knives that get "neglected"; every knife I own is on the schedule, so they all show up in my pockets periodically. I thought I might not even be eligible for the GAW! Of course, having a lot of knives, this schedule also means that most of my knives seldom are carried frequently. In that sense, ALL my knives (except my literal EDC quartet) are somewhat neglected, and how would I choose a knife to enter??

But Saturday was a pretty good day. I only had 4 loads of laundry to do instead of 5 or 6; the sun shone brightly all day, even though a stiff breeze still required that I keep my ears covered when I was outside; I went for an 8000+ step walk in the afternoon; and the walk took me to an antique store where I found a 1956-1988 Imperial USA Kamp-King in great shape for $8!

Suddenly I had a knife I'd NEVER carried just begging for a week of "getting to know you" activities! So I'm in after all, and I'd like to "play for" @Modoc ED as sort of a "get well soon card" to him from The Porch.
I cleaned up the Kamp-King a bit this afternoon, and sharpened the spearpoint main blade. Here's a photo of the knife I'll be carrying for the GAW:

For our first bonding activity, I sliced some apple and grapes to add to a left-over vegetable-and-ground-turkey casserole I had for supper tonight:
impKK.mark.main.apples&grapes.jpg

This should be fun, since my first knife (and only knife for 50+ years) was a Colonial Forest-Master that's almost identical to the Kamp-King. Old Home Week for me.

Thanks again for the cool GAW, Mike, and best wishes to all the participants!! :D:thumbsup::D

(I've also noticed that there are a LOT of knives that I think are fantastic being entered here, and I want to keep track of whom the week doesn't really lead to a renewed enjoyment of their knives. Maybe I can make a deal for some of them - kind of pick them up on the rebound, so to speak.)

Day one update carrying only the Buck 532. Nothing very strenuous for the 1st day just cutting up veggies for a salad and strawberries for desert. No red meat was tested as we had Lasagna for dinner. The Buck handled these duties quite easily, better than the knive my wife has in the kitchen drawer.

I’ve been participating in Jack’s Random Tuesday thread lately, and using it as a way to get out of my usual carry-a-GEC-everyday habit by carrying an infrequently-carried, non-GEC knife once a week. So, for this thread, I thought I would instead carry a GEC knives that I hasn’t had much pocket time.

I ended up chosing this Nifebrite #14 for the week. When these were first released back in 2016, I picked up several of ‘em (both the Boy’s Knife and TC Barlow), and while I’ll grab one every now and then, it’s usually paired with something bigger. So I thought this would be a good opportunity to carry one by itself and see how I feel about it. I went with the Nifebrite because it’s one of my favorite GEC cover materials, but I think I’ve only carried this knife a handful of times in the 3+ years I’ve owned it.

I’m looking forward to following along in this thread throughout the week!

Dan, your photos and comments make my day a bit more beautiful every time I see them. Thank you, so much. Bluenose is bodacious.

That's a winning winnowing process, GT, and (as a fellow Modoc Ed participant) I hope that it produces a winner for you.

If you get tired of carrying that one, I'll be happy to keep it warm for you. That's a mod, right?
Thank you, but I will try to shoulder the burden myself. Yes it’s a 77 barlow blade in a 77 Washington Punch frame with a caplifter added and then recovered in burl ironwood. It’s probably the closest to a grail I’ll get to for a while at least, but every time I get a new knife it gets sharpened and put in the pocket and this one ended up in the safe after sitting unused for a lot of months, so I’m glad this post came along and prompted me to get it back out.

That's a nice-looking knife Dan :) Great pics as always

Careful, Dan... That chickadee looks like he's staking a claim :D Awesome shots!

He's wondering where the darned Lambsfoot has gone! :D

My Sodbuster helped me out this morning by opening up a new pack of electrical tape, so I could repair my rapidly collapsing slingshot catch-box :D
