This is a double barreled giveaway!
Open to anyone who owns a knife in a Tube, and has at least 100 posts in the Traditionals forum! Two posts only, one for A, and one for B, and your post numbers are your entry numbers.
I will close the thread late Wednesday night when I leave for Oregon, and award the winners when I get back a week from Monday!
So much buzz flies around Great Eastern's knives, and many of us have more than a few - too many to carry. As a result, I am sure many are stored in their Tubes.
I made and posted one of these thingies for an old friend, and then decided I needed one too, so I got out my trusty Barlow, and a scrap piece of oak molding (~1/4" X 3/4") 8 1/2" long (6" will do), and went to work.
Really simple, I shaped the end to get under one of the "bump-outs" in the lid, then decorated it so I could find it in the morass that is my computer/knife desk!

The Giveaway!
Two parts: A) Think up a Different or Better Name for this thing, ahem - if there is one! And post the name with a pic of 2 or more traditional knives!
B) Make one of these Thingies, and Regale us with its attributes, and a picture of course!

A) gets a new GEC knife!
B) gets a new GEC knife!

Great idea Charlie, I will have a crack at this, and then edit this-but I cant go in for the knives - I have been Way too fortunate so theres more room for others, see you in a bit.....

Great idea Charlie, gives me something to do tomorrow :)

My name for the lever will be Archimedes (Archie for short)! :D

Edit - There's been some serious development work going on this morning at Chez Noir! :D (If only my internet connection had been so efficient :( )

First things first though, here's a pic of a couple of my favourite traditional knives.

Super-brainy ancient Greek Archimedes famously said that if he had a lever long enough he could move the world, and when I originally started thinking of this design I simply had in mind a long lever. However, while developing the device, I found that a point was quickly reached where extra leverage was no longer required, rather what was needed was a greater element of control. I have therefore kept my Archimedes 1 relatively short, for greater control and pocketability. The crucial design aspect (patent pending) is the subtle curve to the end of the lever, which assists leverage while reducing the need for excessive length. I had also originally intended to add a coloured fob for much the same reason as Charlie, but I wanted to double the efficiency and longevity of the device, as well as making it more versatile. To this end I added a more conventional flat rounded end, which is also wider than the other as the stem of the device has a subtle taper throughout its length. The material used is birch, which gives a good strength to weight ratio, while being easily combustible in case of emergency, allowing the Archimedes 1 to be turned into vital tinder :D

Thanks for this generous and fun giveaway Charlie and good luck everyone

A quick proto I just whipped up. I started with Popsicle sticks but they kept breaking so I moved on to cardboard. My new Charlow worked great for this task with both materials :D.

I wanted to make it key chain friendly as a design feature. I have labeled the key areas in my first photo.

1. The end is curved to match the top of the tube, this is the end mainly designed to pop the tube open.
2. Key chain/Lanyard hole.
3. Cap lifter
4. Area for scale material to dress it up and individualize each release.
5. Screw driver end

Here are a few pics simulating use :)

I will come up with a new name in a bit, have to run for now.

How's about "Proto Rooter" for the name.

You could shape the business end like a pig's snout, put a couple nostrils on it, and have it flair out as it comes back to the handle, so it would look like a pig's head when viewed from above.

Here's a couple of my favorite traditionals.

Seems to me that the best way to pop the top off the tube of a new GEC knife is to use an old GEC knife.

Since the prototype was made using one of the TC barlows, I would like to give credit where credit is due and propose renaming the GEC Tube Topper Popper to -

Tom's Contrivance

A handy little gadget, it is just the thing for those times when you have recently cut your fingernails. No special tools required, all that is needed is a scrap piece of wood and one of those nice, sharp knives you keep in your pockets.

My suggestion is "tube key" taken from the "church key" terminology.

Photos after church today. Working on a design and will post a prototype as soon as I can get the model shop started on it. Probably tomorrow.

Actually Jack has already posted a tool that works perfectly as tested on some tubes here in my desk drawer:

Just need the correct tool open to do it.

A TL-29 is also a perfect tool for the job.

But why stop there, let's get it on!!

Great idea Charlie! Not an entry, just a thanks!

Thanks for the chance, though no entry for me - since I´m almost the receiver of your generosity.

But I would have a name for it in mind ... but I won´t say it to take someone´s idea :D :p
