Name the sharpest knives out of the box

My Spyderco's have definitely been the sharpest out of the box being followed by Benchmade ( I know but I guess I got lucky). Maybe my Benchmades were very sharp because I got the Skirmish, Rukus, Grip, and 210 which were all hair popping sharp.

Murray Carter!!! HOLY COW they are sharp! Sharpest knives I've seen in ages.

Last year I was visiting with a couple of tactical knife makers at a local show. Our conversation turned to outdoor interests so I asked what they carried for camp cooking. At first I thought my question was out of line as both broke up in laughter, then I was accused of having been coached to ask that question. It turned out that they were camping together and Knife Make 1 had just purchased a Murray Carter knife and handed it to Knife Maker 2 saying that it was the sharpest knife that he had ever seen. Knife Maker 2 proceeded to test the edge and sliced open his thumb in the process. It turns out the rest of the campers are not letting Knife Maker 2 live down that mishap.

Cold Steel and Spyderco are the sharpest mass-produced knives.

Ontario seems to be the dullest . . . couldn't even sharpen the damn things (after wasting half an hour trying) . . . had a professional regrind the edges.

Spyderco hands down

The sharpest Spyders right of the box were my: FRN Calypso VG10/SE and my SS Cricket/SE;)

Spyderco's have always been nice and sharp right out of the box.

Also, even though its not the typical knife that comes up in conversation around here, but I just bought a Flexcut "Carvin' Jack" knife / tool, and it was crazy sharp, probably the single sharpest knife out of the package that I have ever bought.

Lots of Benchmade haters out there:jerkit: . I personally haven't had any problems with any of mine.

The dullest by far was Sog Trident

Nobody hates Benchmade, but their sharpening is hit or miss. I've had good luck with them so far, though.

Spydercos are the most consistently sharp knives right out of the box, though Bark River has been good to me. That convex edge is what does it.

They need more cowbell damnit.

Could Chuck Norris get a knife so sharp, that Chuck Norris himself could not roundhouse kick it without sustaining damage to himself?

Its a thinker.

Spyderco Calipso Jr. with ZDP-189 - sharpest knife I ever see. In general Spyderco knives are sharpest out of the box - well they famous in sharpening devices and they start making knives after they got famous in sharpeners.

Buck top models are very sharp out of the box also.

Thanks, Vassili.

I don't agree that Benchmades are dull.Just they are not so sharp.I don't think that Benchmade can't razor sharp their knives, they just don't because they want to!Personally I don't like razor sharp knives, they are too dangerous and they don't offer much more. And even a razor sharp knife will lose its extreme sharpness after a while of use.

I can't believe that there has only been one kershaw post! :o

I've had Benchmades and Spydies also, but by far the most wickedly sharp knife I ever took out of the box was a Kershaw Blackout. Man that thing was sharp.

If that knife was a person I'd have to classify it as insane. :D

Who cares how sharp it is out of the box?
Don't most of us sharpen our knives anyway?
When I get a new knife, one of the first things I do is put an edge on it that works to my specifications. Maybe that's old-fashioned.

spyderco gets my edge at the right edge angle...15deg per side. I don't understand why there is a need for 20deg per side on folders. Choppers, yes...folders? And with all the new-fangled steels?

sharpest - spyderco calypso jr & rick hinderer firetac

dullest - oh...a lot of customs :o , my 635 (although benchmade resharpened it for me for free + paid for the reshipping to me - ), emersons (only my first emerson which I got in 2000 shaved. the other 3 I had thereafter never did so)

Sharpest : Benchmade 921

(Maybe I got lucky. Other BMs not as sharp as 921. My Spydecos' not as sharp as that BM 921, either.)

Sharpest by far have been Spydercos. I only own two (an Endura and a Native) but the edges were ground so flawlessly that when it was time to sharpen it took no effort at all.

The dullest out of the box has been my Benchmade 710. I love the knife (it's my EDC) but I was very disappointed by the out of the box dullness. Didn't take a lot of time to get it popping hairs though. I've also had a few less than sharp experiences with Buck lately... two 110s came out of the box not able to slice paper. But with the Bucks, the edge geometery was perfect so they were sharp in no time.

As of today I'm going to have to re-issue my vote.

I just got a 556 Mini-Griptilian today in 154CM. This is THE sharpest knife I've ever had EVER. It's amazing. I shaved my arm a little and the hairs were running away ahead of the blade. :D

If this is "the new Benchmade way" they done real good.

This knife blew me away. I've had many Benchmade's in the past but they have all been dull or semi-sharp.

WOW!

Spydercos:thumbup:

All of my knifes are sharp but my kids always pick the cricket SS serrated edge or the new Spyker to shred post-it note:D, maybe its the look also.

Dullest : many SAK except Leatherman.
