Name the sharpest knives out of the box

The knife that gets my award for best "out of the box" sharpness is my little Spyderco Bill Moran, trailing point version. It is my first (and only) VG-10 blade, and I am truly impressed with it's performance.

The irony of the situation is that the knife never came with a box... or a sheath, for that matter. I suppose I should refer to it as "out of the display" sharpness.

I still haven't gotten around to making a sheath for it, either. The poor thing - it just lies there like a foot without a boot. So sad.

I've never seen any brand that's consistently sharp NIB. Spyderco however would probably get my vote.

Personally, Cold Steel knives have been the sharpest straight from the box.
My OSS was scary sharp on both edges when I got it. Almost too sharp.
However, the becker CU-7 I purchased a year or so ago was able to shave hair, both before and after I chopped through a 2x4 with it.

Sharpest : Spyderco's definitly, because every Spyderco in my collection is scary sharp ( but I only have 32 ...). Both my Microtech OTF are nice too. MCUSTA folder (TAKE) is as sharp as Microtech's. Just received the Bradley Mayhem, it is perfectly sharp (First Production #31).

Dullest : A few years ago, the first Boker Bud Nealy collaboration, I've never been able to put an edge on this one.
Surprisingly, both Benchmade's butterfly knives I bought last year were dull out of the box (41MC and 46MC). They were both bought through a well known dealer, so they seem to come dull from factory. As they are D2, I have hard time getting a proper edge on them using my sharpmaker...

My Benchmade Skirmish is the only knife out of the box that really did scare me.
It drew blood and I swear I didn't touch it!;)

I have noticed one problem with some of benchmade knives and some other brands, as Cliff Stamp rightly pointed out, it is the edge geo. When I got my BM AFCK it was not all that sharp out of the box, I had to lower the angle of the grind. Then add a hard steel like D2 and that only compounds the problem.

My sharpest ever was a Benchmade Snipe that would remove hair from my
arm like electric clippers. Yes, it's Red Class but I've always been surprised
that this knife doesn't have more enthusiasts.

I'v had a few kershaws that were sharp as could be out of the box

I was wondering when somebody would mention the legendary Kershaw sharpness here!
The sharpest I've seen has been the Spyder Kiwi though, the Wharnie design may have sth to do with it I guess.
Boker Applegate is indeed very dull, esp. the Combat folder is more like a field knife w/o even an intention of sharpness.
As for Sebs, I've always been disappointed with S30V, and am sorry to have missed the higher HRC'd BG-42.
But then, out-of-the-box is supposed to be a lame criterion, the question for hardliners (no pun intended) is not how sharp do you get it, but how sharp do you get to getting it :)
That was an interesting observation on customers getting the knife sharpened for them in person... the Japanese have that, called sth like honba-zuke, and unfortunately that means you hardly ever get the real sharpness since there's few people who can do that final 'insanely skilled' sharpening of what are after all high end Japanese carbon blades.

Sharpest out of the box was a kershaw whirlwind! even sharper than a $160.00 ats55 spyderco! My cold steel mini hunter was only okay in the sharp department as with all 10 of my cold steels but they hold an edge very well! bucks are as sharp as any spyderco too if they are straight edged bucks! the next sharpest thing to that kershaw was an old model leatherman super tool, I took it from the sheath and opened the blade and touched it and started bleeding then handed it to my boss and he simply touched it and then we both went for band aids. I have had about every type of knife from manufacturers and any knife from a reputable manufacturer made in U.S.A. or germany, japan, sweden, italy, spain. and a few others will take a straight razor edge and hold it well whether cheap stainless, carbon or top of the line modern alloys If you know how to sharpen a knife you will soon learn which ones are quality cause you can shave with any of them!

Burgundy Calypso in ZDP. Then a Buck 110. Then a bunch of Doziers, Cold Steels, and other Spyderco's and Beckers.

The Spyderco Mini Manix that I recently received and now have as my EDC is by far, the sharpest knife I have ever received!

Big Kudos to Sal and the folks in Golden!
