Name YOUR Steels!

Benchmade 860 bedlam- 154cm
Benchmade 805 tsek- m390
CRK Tanto Large Sebenza- s30v
Burger LEXK- Bohler N690

listed from least to most preferred, top to bottom respectively

1095CV--2
1095--3 (2 custom)
1085--1
L6--1 (guess on this one, it's custom made from a circular saw blade)
13c26--2
12c27--2
Aus8--2
1.4116 (416 Krupp)--2
420HC--1
440A--1
420J2--1

That's not including kitchen knives, I'm sure all of them are either 420 or 1.4116 stainless. None are carbon steel.

1095 is definitely my favorite. I guess my 2nd favorite would be 13c26 since two my two EDC are that, but I carry them for the design more than the steel. Show me a good one hand folder in carbon steel for a decent price and that's probably what I'd be EDC'ing.

lets see
1 154cm
1 vg10
2 victorinox stainless
1 420hc
3 1095
1 Boker carbon steel
2 13c26
1 d2
8 s30v
1 1082
1 12c27
2 aus8

and once it arrives
1 A2

My favorite steel for modern folders is s30v and for traditionals and fixed blades its 1095. But my favorite fixed blade is my one in 1082

Very nice and good job on the upgrade!! ;)

Sure. Its being made by Jason Howard. He is a newer maker here on BF I think. I like the look of his work though and his prices on the Knifemakers section were good I thought. So I contacted him. Initially he suggested 440c I think, but I said I wanted D2 or 154CM. I then decided on a stainless super steel 154. He contacted me later and said for a little more he could upgrade me to CPM 154 I was like lets do it. Here is a pic.

Here's the set I've used:

A2
VG10
S30V
AUS-8
154CM
1095

I'm feel'n the A2 in convex grind, the edge is just invisible head on: excellent slicer, edge retention and easy to resharpen.

Why no love for S30V?

Uh... S30V was the first steel I said. But as for every steel I own, I don't know about counts but I own the following steels:

AUS8
S30V
ATS-34
154CM
1095
1075
8cr13mov
14C28N
13C26
CPM M4
440C
440A

That includes folders, fixed blades, and kitchen knives. I need to get more exotic steels though! I have a ZT 0550 pre-ordered and a ZT0560 pre-ordered so when those come in I can add Vanax 35 and Elmax to my collection.

Sorry, brain fart!

s30v and 154cm only right now. 1095 and SR-101 as well, but don't have any with that steel currently. I'll add a2 and Elmax to that list whenever my customs get here.

What's the Elmax custom you've got coming?

It's a DDR Gunhammer. I was gonna get it in s30v at first. Then the s35vn craze came out and I set out to change it to that initially. After more research, I concluded s35vn, while great on paper, is not that much different from s30v to the end user. Elmax is supposed to be just that much better than 30 or 35vn.

And if you want to get into the nitty gritty, comparing both spec sheets, Elmax blows 30 and 35vn out of the water.

Yeah, that Dozier is a nice knife, but they aren't reasonable by my standard...

I found a stag handle for $1050 and saw one with Paper Micarta sell for $600.....

Wow, had no idea they were that much more than the fixed blades.

My personal favorite is VG-10. For me, it's the perfect balance between ease of sharpening and edge holding. It holds an edge well enough for my uses, and I can easily get a wicked edge on it. Oddly, I don't have many knives in this steel. Only 2 in fact, a Rescue 93mm blue, which i rarely carry, and my Endura Wave SE, which I carry every day, but hope I never use (if you know what I mean).

3 in s30v (2 sebenzas and leatherman charge tti)

1 in sleipner (sr-1)

The sleipner blows the pants off the s30v!

And I have some CTS20CP waiting for me when I get back to my house next week.
