Native 5 - the perfect pocket knife?

i think i said this once before somewhere on the forum!one of my native 5's is always in my pocket,i have tried to carry the PM2 or manix 2 every day of the week, but my native 5 kicks them both out,as its a vary pocket friendly folder/lockback,still on the hunt for S110V/carbon fiber version though.:)

Mine (s110v and g10) arrived today!
No real verdict so far, the hole seems a bit hard to access and the edges of the lock bar a bit harsh, but still. Nice knife, excellent fit and finish as far as I can tell.
Looking forward to carrying it.

Dang...now I'm considering getting a Native 5! I really should stop reading these forums!:D

Now my quandary is whether to buy an S35VN or an S110V version. Whichever version, I prefer G10 over FRN or other handle material. I already have an S110V Military, but with the use it's getting I won't know personally know how it resharpens for quite a while. And if/when it ever needs a reprofiling, that would likely be beyond my sharpening capabilities. Now, S35VN I know I can deal with. I'm not certain if the S35VN Native 5 is still in production, or if it's the "standard" version while the S110V version is the upgraded alternate version; I would imagine so, since the S110V one has the "blurple" handle.

Anyone have any suggestions or experiences with one or both to compare the advantages/disadvantages of either? Particularly of the S35VN version.

I just picked up a PM2 this morning. I was considering going S110V but I decided against it because I've never thought "S30V doesn't hold up very well" and I can sharpen it. I have concerns with 110V.

I'm also considering a Native 5. If I do get one I'll go with the S35vn version. I love that steel; it's no slouch and I can sharpen it no issue.

Thanks, BMC. Yeah, I was already leaning heavily towards the S35VN Native 5. Now I've decided that's the one I'll go with, if I do pull the trigger and buy. I love my S110V Millie, but I think I'll use that as my sole knife in that steel, to see how I can handle that alloy.

The Native 5 in S35vn is high on my want list! :)

I recently acquired one of the S110V FRN lightweights. Had store credit at Midway that I could not redeem for cash and this seemed like a good use for it. I've had it about a month now and have not carried anything else since it arrived. I may need to get rid of a lot of other folders! The S110V has been interesting--I don't do much heavy cutting with it, but I do use it about 40X a day on food, boxes, zip ties, etc and it's been holding up remarkably. About once a week I give it 50-100 strokes on the medium Sharpmaker rods and that brings it back to that extreme factory sharpness, but I don't think it's ever gotten so dull that it would not shave arm hair.

I am curious about the difference between the Native 4 and 5. Can anyone help?

The LW serrated version is the backup folder in my work bag.

You have to give Spyderco credit for the improved back lock on both the G10 and LW versions, it is s-o-l-i-d.

I'm hoping a serrated Native 5 is under the Christmas Tree for me. :)

Haven't used a Native 5 yet, but I have the maxamet model on pre-order. Looks like a great knife.

I finally got around to getting a Native 5 in the blue FRN and CPM S110V blade.

I have been putting it to work opening packages and breaking down boxes.

It works really well. I plan on getting the gray FRN and Maxamet blade too.

I love my S110V Native and trying to resist the Maxamet version. I have the Maxamet Mule and love it to.

I run through the hills, arms spread wide, singing the Native 5's praise. I was worried about the FRN handle, but supposedly Spyderco puts more glass fibre in their matrix, and the only failure stories I could find online were a) Native meets a lawnmower; b) Native gets buried beneath a Bobcat; c) someone tries to pry their roof apart with one; and d) a guy who torture-tested the Spyderco FRN handle to failure, freezing it at progressively lower 10 degree increments and then wailing on it with a hammer - it finally failed at -27C. I had some truly bad knife accidents as an apprentice (right before the red fountain started, I discovered that we are in fact made of chicken mince), so for me, it's all about controllability, which means a finger choil and a shorter blade. Love it love it love it.

We need a compression lock Native 6 with G-10 handles and DLC coated blade :) please please pretty please

When I first got my Native 5 FRN, I was a little hesitant to take it to work. The size felt perfectly suited for office carry and small EDC tasks, but I felt my Manix was a better fit for warehouse work. Well I decided "What the heck?" and took it with me on a whim.

It has now become my main work carry. It is just a monster at the warehouse. Thick tape, industrial zip ties, tearing down boxes; it does it all. And the fact that it's smaller and "less threatening" is the icing on the cake. Consider me a believer in the Native 5!

Edited to add obligatory knife pic:

Barman suggested that I get one when I first found bf, took a while to get to it. But boy, what a solid, solid all arounder. What I really enjoy about the natives back lock is that it has this positive "click" very much like how a Sebenza or other Ti Framelocks have that click. The only difference is that the Ti o escape sort of reverberate a bit during the locking motion where the Native is a solid thud.
