Native 5 - the perfect pocket knife?

I'll have to get my hands on a Native to try one out. I'm quite fond of the Stretch line. Any comparison from someone who's had both?

The ergos of both lock into your grip. Whether you are synching up with the choil or regular grip.

They're the perfect compliment to each other!

Fair warning: the Stretch and Native are both favorites of mine… I had the Stretch first. I typically wear a size medium glove, sometimes large. With that in mind, here are a few observations (beyond the obvious blade length and other differences):

On the Stretch, I use it in both a ‘regular’ grip (not using the 50/50 choil), and choked up. I tend to use it choked up on the choil more, though.

On the Native, I always use it choked up. (To be honest, I don’t get a very good grip unless I use it in that position.) That is not a criticism or drawback, in my view – just something to be aware of. And the grip in that choked up position is… flawless for me.

The Stretch’s blade is perfectly thin & slicy for its size. The Native’s blade, for its size, is a little more on the thick side… which I thought might bug me. It hasn’t -- it’ll slice just fine, too.

If you’re rounding out your collection of Spyderco FRN knives, I’d say a Stretch/Native combo is perfect. (The Delica could also compliment the Stretch, but feels a little more similar… and I prefer the Native to the Delica.)

I wear an XL size glove, but I had pretty much known from the stats that the choil would be my only way of getting a full grip on the Native. A slightly thicker blade doesn't mean much to me. I actually kind of prefer that to the ultra thin Delica.
Guess i'll have to keep my eyes open for one on the Exchange.

This is a tough thread to read. Like many guys, I have a limit to what I can collect, and so I kinda have to one-in-one-out in a category. Got a N5LW late last year, got to carry it a bit, and do enjoy it (local legal carry restrictions and work guidelines kept it from being an EDC) And I just grabbed a PM3, so the 5 is on the sale docket. aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh. The PM3 is tougher, heavier, but for the days I can carry it, just seems that little bit more my speed. But the N5 is going to be hard to let go... Honestly its the first time I've struggled with that decision.

I have a lot of respect for guys with self imposed guidelines on the number of knives they will keep.
I haven t had that willpower. If I like a knife, I keep it. And my number grows. Probably one day I ll change my mind and arrange a big sale. But I often I will change my edc rotation and include a knife for a few months that I may not have carried for a long time. Part of the fun of the hobby.

I havent wanted a Native until reading this thread and like gadgetgeek I somewhat limit my stable. My limit is to knives that will get used. Its less restrictive that setting a certain number but still keep you reasonable. Everything gets a fair shot in the pocket for about a month. At that point it gets evaluated and then either makes it into the regular rotation or is put aside for a while. After a few months, if I never think about it again it gets moved along.

The FFG native 5 LW has really caught my attention though and I think Inam going to pick one up.

Riz! I also keep my collection pared down to regular users. Since getting a Native 5 LW (S110V) my other knives have gone pretty much untouched and I'm starting to sell them off.

I sold my 2013 forum native to a friend and regretted it ever since. i wanted to try a hap40 delica and couldn't justify having both, so i sold the native. This thread amplified those regrets every time it popped up. I made a trade for a s110v LW yesterday and it arrived today. All is right in my world.

I dont know if anything can bump the military from my pocket, but its worth a try!

If you could only have 2 spyderco, you could do a heck of a lot worse than a milli and a native5, IMO.
pretty much the perfect companion to the milli, especially in spyderedge.

I too like to keep a ceiling on # of knives I keep.

It's been about a three year journey from an eBay $3.56 shipped Frost made in Pakistan special to vintage Benchmades like the Pinnacle 750, GEC, Rough Rider, Chris Reeves, and it was a really hard realization as I still have gear acquisition syndrome (gas). But what that ive come to accept is that I like small traditionals and basically pretty much just Spydercos.

So with that in mind things become pretty simple. Outside of a mnandi I don't have a whole lot of other to gets or to try's after trying a 100+ knives. You like what you like and you shouldn't fight it. The Cara Cara 2 I bought twice after I gave away my first one. It's like an in between size between an endura and delica and with its chisel grind punches above its weight! Love the other Spydies in the photo.

If they do a Manix 2 lw in a fun steel like Elmax I'm pulling the trigger. That's like my one exception currently. The manix 2 lw and native 5 lw are like my two most favorite modern edc's.

PS I would hang onto to the native until that shiny new knife thst came in the mail feeling wears off. You might end up just rebuying it.

The native is way too easy to pocket and is a superb all arounder. It's that fact that it's not heavier, stouter, stronger, longer than other edc's is what makes it so frigging great at times! It's just stupid easy to throw it in the jeans and forget about it. Most of the time when I'm out my edc doesn't get used anyhow. Lol

I just got mine I got the combo edge version
It looks very good with a combo edge
Mine is s35vn native rules!!!!!!!

I am so sad that I have waited for so long to try a Native. The Never Summer is definitely a keeper!
