To answer the original question, maybe, just maybe, they were trying to avoid setting off a feeding frenzy among the flippers until actual forumites had a chance to buy theirs. There have been some ugly incidents in past years.

Went to pull the trigger on one, but due to living in upstate New York Spyderco will not ship any locking folders or fixed blades over 4 inches. Because NYC.......

Dear Spyderco,
What do upstate New Yorkers have to do to prove NY laws allow folding blades up to 4 inches in their county?

Until then, I'll leave you with a picture of my swick 4. Bought from Spyderco's site, shipped to NY. (Tell me the Native 5 is more volatile then the swick 4...)

Try paying a $285,000 fine for violating interstate shipping laws that others have ignored for years and see how eager you are to risk shipping to New York.

I hadn't heard a thing about this, and now I know why. :) But will probably be all over the Forum Traditional Knife.

I understand Spyderco's need to protect them selfs. And respect that. But trying to compare it to violating a Federal Act. (Switchblade knife act) by shipping "illegal" knife components internationally to the states is a stretch. This is a state restriction, based on county. Currently the Burrows of NYC have strict knife acts. Leaving all of central and upstate NY safe from said restrictions. There for, no law (or act) broken.
I don't intend this to be an attack, so I'll go back to my initial question in my first post.

Spyderco,
What, if anything, can be done to rectify the shipping issue to New York?

I went to buy one as well, but no shipping to NY. Bummer, I've sworn off other retailers who do that, I'd hate to do it to spyderco too. Why not say no shipping to the zip codes in the five boroughs, and not punish the entire state where these knives are perfectly legal?

The information we have from our legal team (both here and in NY State) are that the laws are NY State laws. We haven't seen anything to the contrary. The best thing that any consumer can do is to speak to your state representatives about changing or clarifying the laws that exist in your state. Support organizations like http://kniferights.org/ who can assist in making an impact. We honestly don't enjoy restricting sales, but until the laws there are clarified or changed we're left with little choice.

Thanks Kristi, I know the company doesn't like it anymore then the consumer.

You know the old saying, "If there's a will there's a way." I look forward to this new Native in the family. I should of known better then to sidetrack this topic so early. I now find my first post as a knee jerk action, based on inability to click that good ol' "buy" button. Carry on.

This horse has been beaten to death, over and over and over, for years.

I have the black version and I believe a blue S110V version that will match the lightweight Manix is coming out so I passed.

Maroon? I'm moderately colorblind, but that Native looks chocolate brown to me. I'll have to take your guyz' word for it.
