Need your help

I generally carry a 3" and a 4" folder for utility purposes. The 3" is handier for more precision cutting, and the 4" works better for larger tasks. Usually I end up using both for something or other every day. This past week I have cut up boxes, garden hose, opened packages, shaved some woodworking joinery - they get used alot.

My Dad gave me my first "jack knife" when I was about 8 years old and I have been carrying a folder ever since, except when they got lost for some reason.

Let's see.

1. approx. 3.5 to 4"...today is a Kershaw Whirlwind and a Spyderco Ladybug on a keychain.

2. Used to cut open boxes and letters. Trim tubing at work and today at lunch I used it to cut a Snickers in half to share.

3. Approx. 12-13 yrs old. Had the Boy Scout thing going on.

1. Anywhere between 1-5" but usually a Spyderco Police.

2. I use it for cutting packing tape, cardboard boxes, wire, food, dressing small game, and just about any one of a million tasks.

3. I got my first pocket knife for my 5th birthday. I've been carrying since. It used to be OK to carry a knife at school. In fact, my teachers used to borrow it all the time. I've never once considered it a weapon, it's just a sharp tool.

1) My normal out of the house EDC is a 91mm Victorinox SAK - so the main blade is about 2 3/4" total with 2 3/8" sharpened edge.

At home I carry the Kershaw Leek (black Tungsten DLC coated) which has a 2 7/8" blade.

2) the SAK tools get as much use as the blade - the knife blade is used for general purpose cutting - foods, cutting/scoring paper - opening boxes, cutting string etc.

3) not until about 34 on a regular EDC basis

FWIW - I carry a SAK, not just because I like them and find the tools versatile - but also because it's one of the few knives that is almost universally recognized, and pretty unlikely to be mistaken as an offensive weapon.

Hope that helps,

i) 3" or less, more is illegal here.

ii) General use - today I have shaved down some splintered timber and cut some string.

iii) This year (I'm 22) - I've only just discovered the joys of knives with clips; I cycle a lot and things fall out of pockets when cycling, so I never carried my old penknife because it was too nice to lose.

I always carry a knife between 3 and 4" in blade length. Right now, it is primarily a 3.5" blade folder.

I use mine on a daily basis to open packages, cut things for science experiments at school, cut tape and equipment in football practices and games, etc... etc...

I was given my first knife was I was 5. I have been carrying pocket knives since I was 6.

1. 4" blade length most every day

2. General utility - opening mail/packages, breaking down boxes, cutting string, etc...

3. Approx. 12 years-old

1. Never without a 3"-4" blade, but prefer a 6"-7" fixed blade for general use around the farm. Regularly carry a 24" (overall) knife for chopping, etc.

2. Mmmm.... Too numerous to really cover, Hunting, brush clearing, cutting twine off bales, opening sacks of feed & seed, food prep, scraping, opening packages, stripping wire, etc., etc., etc. Defense may linger in the back of my mind.

3. Since the second grade. (rural community)

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, though. Hope when the smoke clears, you'll be able to share the story? Or at least let us know if our answers made a difference?

On an unrelated note, have you spoken with Tommy Matasko (sp?) lately? He mentioned you a while back, and my ears perked up. He's a family friend of ours.

1. What size (blade length) knife do you normally carry?

2. What do you use your knife for?

3. At what age did you begin carrying a knife?

1) I normally carry at least two knives: an SAK (usually one of the Victorinox Cyber Tool models) and a 3 - 4" blade folder.

2) I carry the SAK more for its tools than for its blades; I find the scissors and the screwdrivers to be particularly useful. The larger folder is used for utility purposes: opening mail and packaging, food preparation, etc.

3) I've been carrying a knife since childhood.

Best of luck for your court case.

1. What size (blade length) knife do you normally carry?

usually around 4 - 5" long...

2. What do you use your knife for?

anything I can, cutting ties off metal that comes into the shop, opening boxes, pretty much as a full utilitarian piece...

3. At what age did you begin carrying a knife?

like 7 or 8 years of age, only a small folder but i thought the world of it :D

Best of luck in the court case...
