"net to me" - wtf!!

As a relative newcomer to BF [I began my membership years ago] I am an infrequent poster though a vociferous reader. I also belong to a myriad of other on-line forums reflecting my interests; blade ware, musical instruments, watches.

I've spent thousands, buying from various SELLERS listing their items in various ways with varying language. I have spent a lot of money on internet sales and have only been disappointed once in all of those transactions, this from an unscrupulous BUYER.

My conclusion after reading every word of every post in this thread is that Gizmoman has distilled the issue perfectly on page one; if you don't like a SELLERS terms, if you don't like the language of the listing, if PayPal is an issue, if TYD is a problem.. simply move on. Move. On.

Your ability to simply walk away is the ultimate arbiter. I don't ever remember being angered or annoyed by a SELLERS verbiage, no matter what it is. If it's an item I really want I'll pm said SELLER to strike a deal workable for me. If not, I simply move on and don't give it a second thought. Unless the item is a Unicorn chances are another will come along.

I'm much more inclined to communicate with a SELLER privately, come to a assessment as to whether I want to transact with that person or not. I'm also not shy about making an offer slightly lower than the SELLERS asking price, should that be appropriate. But being annoyed by the verbiage of the listing ? That dosen't even enter into it.

To quote Gizmoman;

What are you getting your panties in a bunch for??
If you are not comfortable with """NET TO ME""
You close out that thread youre looking at and move along

YOU contact the owner-seller- PRIVATELY and
see if there is any wiggle room in price.

THIS is a selling-trading arena for all.
YOU dont like the TERMS of the sellers deals.
MOVE along..

And if you don't like people complaining about it, you can... simply move on.

Ha! No, I don't mind the complaining, I'm obviously enjoying it as I'm participating in this thread. I'm only expressing mild puzzlement at investing any energy into a thing you can just walk away from. As Gizmoman expressed better than I.
By all means carry on, am with you all the way. And no snark intended.

I'm just being a little snarky myself, no worries.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in this social experiment/thread. you have all shown your true colors-- from those who offer advice but cannot follow it - to those who know everything and TRY to illustrate it- and special thanks to the people who came here merely to insult-
thank you all again- for showing everyone what and who you are!

If you don't like "net to me" don't buy from threads that do that. In the meantime, its a quick way for me to convey that Paypal charges fees, some don't realize or are ignorant to the fact. I like the "net to me" clause and will continue to use it!

As well as being a quick way to show the buyer that YES there IS a Paypal fee, I don't like giving money to companies that have terrible policies, Paypal has cut funding and payment to companies due to political pressure before. They have their own agenda and I for one would rather NOT give PAYPAL ANY of my funds. I'd rather have YOU or I take that 3.5% for ourselves, no?

If you don't agree with their policies, that is fine, but using that as an excuse to rip them off of the reasonable fees to use their service is poor form IMHO.

Then simply use checks or money orders, no?

Your logic is a bit flawed. When you sell something, that fee is yours due to the fact you are receiving money. If you pass that on to someone else, it will eventually come around and bite you. That is what starts bad reputations.

I don't necessarily care for Paypal, but they should be paid their cut. Render unto Caesar...

Thank you, for running another one of these thread's, Bigjonhoss!:thumbup:My buying/selling/trading ignore list, just keeps growing & growing. It's unreal, just how many greedy seller's there are, who would cut off their own nose to spite their face...just to make a couple of bucks.

One of thee most insulting, oxymoronic, hypocritical statements, that I've read here in a long time.

Thank you very much, for letting us know where you stand on this issue, Subietuner;...this has to be one of thee biggest F.Y's. that I've had the pleasure of reading here on this forum.

.

This is good advice. You should listen. Especially for a new member who has 71 post, all of which but two have something to do with buying, selling, or trading.

I don't see anything wrong with using this forum only for business. I discuss my knife hobby on r/knifeclub. Not here as I find it a bit slow to respond to threads and the people are usually less fun to be around, older, and more conservative. Nothing wrong with that, its just not for me. I have more fun discussing knives elsewhere.

As for the "ethics" of paypal getting their cut. Paypal itself has few ethics, they just cut MEGA's (file sharing site) funds that were payed to them by customers, simply because they use encryption... and there are many other cases where paypal simply wont do business with companies based on political and religous stances. I don't care if you like it or not, Paypal has a terrible reputation for ethics.

I believe that companies that host transactions and offer buyer and seller protection should get a cut, they have to to survive since they provide a service and will need to be compensated and make money, BUT I also believe that if Paypal wishes to unethically cut funding to project and companies who are operating legally, then I do not feel bad pretending you guys are my family and selling money through a service that rakes in millions in profit.

Paypal is doing just fine raking in profits with me and plenty of other people "abusing" their "gift" option.

If they can make so much profit in one year, are their transaction fees really a fair representation of what their costs are to provide that transaction and buyer protection? Probably not...
