Neva and Shadowynn: An Alaskan Tale of Two Tails

Those are going to be some sexy knives. I really love this design.

And I will say again, that I really hope someone will raffle one of them off. Because I can't afford to buy one, but I could afford some tickets for a chance.

But in any case, this is a great project. And I think these knives will be something special

Ryan will start shipping these out next week to participants. Please send me your mailing addresses to lorien(@)loriendesign.ca, even if you've sent it to me already. I'm not very organized these days.

There are three sets left

Email sent. Look forward to working on this project.

Ryan's got your info now, Ben. He'll get yours out to you on Monday.

As for the remaining sets....I seriously cannot believe they haven't been spoken for yet!

So...I need to start hearing from people who've expressed an interest in participating. So far, I've only gotten two mailing addresses.

Lorien,

I was wondering what the status of this blade project was, but, now that I know they are ready to go, I have sent you my mailing address.

Remind me: What's the steel being used?
Was there a project heat treater lined up?
Were there handle material preferences or donors?

I look forward to it. Thanks again,

Schuyler

hey Schuyler, the steel is 1095, and there is no one lined up to heat treat the work.

The field is wide open for you to take these blanks and do what you want to do with them, vis a vis materials.

Selling the work is up to each maker. Whether you choose to present the project to a specific patron, or open it up to all through an online auction is completely up to you. All I ask is that; 1. makers post up their finished blades in this thread, (WiP photos would be an added bonus) and, 2. that the lion's share of the proceeds go to Adam and Haley.

If there are some costs to recover, such as heat treat services, it's totally fine to recoup them when it comes time to sell.

Have fun!

I have started working on my set... Quick update

I have the blades Normalized, Thermal Cycled, Rough Ground, Tapered the Tang, Clayed, Heat Treated and Just finishing up the Temper cycles as I type this...

To keep STeven happy I paid close attention to get some distal taper in the blade :D

Rough ground the Swedge / Clip

Shere the blades are Clayed up and ready for Heat Treat

Post Heat Treat, Nice and Ugly!!

thanks Ryan! Those are looking great :)
I hope Steven likes em ;)

I sent a pm because I read the thread from back to front. I included my mailing address there. I'll be out of pocket in Africa for the next 4 weeks, but can make some progress after. Looking forward to this. If anyone needs the logo or anything, let me know...

Alright, we're cookin!
The following list of makers sent in their mailing addresses, and if they haven't already gotten the goods, they'll be on their way.

Ryan Weeks
Peter and Aldo Bruno
Peter McKinley
Travis Fry
Schuyler Lovestrand
Ben Seward
Matt Lane

If anyone knows any female cutlers who'd be interested in taking this on, please get them in touch with me. We've got a bit of a sausage party going on, and in the spirit of this project, I think it a little more yin would be a good thing.

Schuyler Lovestrand sent me some in progress photos last night;

Hey, there wouldn't happen to be anyone out there willing to contribute heat treating services, would there? If so, please get in touch!

very cool project! I had not seen this before. I agree a raffle would be great for atleast one set!

I'm at a loss, nothing really new there, but this time concerning the addition of maker's marks to these blade sets. I'm not familiar with the protocol or custom pertaining to collaborations, especially of this sort. Do I add my mark? It's not entirely my work. If I should, where? What about the designer, and test builder, and Aldo? I understand there might be a etching stencil of the two dogs? What are other makers doing in this regard?

Thanks,

-Peter

Ryan's grinding and heat treat looks awesome so far, and how about those Lovestrand grinds!!!!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

My package of blades arrived yesterday. Very nice pieces. Time to get at it.

-Peter

Peter- I'm STOKED on your interpretation! A sub hilt looks like it would fit right in on this.

Wrt your questions about marking the blades, personally I don't feel the need to have my mark anywhere on anyone's knife.
It makes sense to me that the maker puts their mark on there, and maybe one way to approach this is to include a certificate of provenance or somesuch which describes that project, and makes the origins of the knife clear (?).

there was some talk about this project at Blade this year; peeps asking if it was still moving forward and whatnot.

The answer is 'yup'! Schuyler Lovestrand is keen to get his knives completed, and asked me about the stencil today. Did anyone get stencils made for this? If so, drop me a line and I'll get you Schuyler's mailing info.

It would be really great to start seeing these knives finished, so if you've made any progress, please post up your pics or send em to me so I can post em up for ya.

I never did receive the blades. Maybe they got lost in the mail? Not sure. Anyway, I'll send the stencil graphics to anyone who needs them.
