hey folks,
well, I'm gonna call this one finally.

I know some knives got made, but all the air's escaped from this project. I'm pretty disappointed, (not with anyone) because I had hoped this thing would have gone over better given its rousing start. It's all good, I'm not complaining as I was glad to feel like I was able to contribute in my own way, in the moment. Maybe the moment's passed.

I'll chalk it all up to experience. If no responses, I'll let this thread be and allow it to trail off into obscurity.

If any of these knives are finished and have been photographed, I would love to see them, and hear the story related to them if you care to share.

Otherwise, I really appreciate your interest and involvement. Hopefully we aren't given another 'opportunity' to be of service to our fellows in a scenario such as this!

Don't give up yet Lorien. I've finished the pair and need to get them to Paul for the sheaths and to someone for the project logo, if they are still up for that. I'll try and get a couple of quick photos up here later. Thanks again.

Schuyler

Don't give up yet Lorien. Many of the makers that jumped on have many obligations in addition. Also life has a way of getting terribly complicated at times. Don't be surprised if you see some getting done here and there. I applaud your efforts and those of the folks that volunteered. Keep the faith, this is a good thing, good things have a way of coming around.

Chris

okay, Pappy Long's helped me get my head straight, and Schuyler is inches away from having a completed set of knives available, and I must say that from what I've seen they are totally badass!

I will now transmogrify my defeated attitude into a whip cracking attitude, aka, if you've made a commitment to this project and have yet to fulfill it I will be getting in touch!

It is summer, and time is precious, but WINTER IS COMING, and it gets cold up in Alaska so let's send some cashola up there to keep the forges burning!

When it comes to selling your knife set, if you can't find a ready buyer please let me know if I can help.

Schuyler's the first outta the gate, and his knives have been snuggled up nice and cozy into some Paul Long leathers!

I don't know whether or not these knives are spoken for, but if you're interested, drop me a pm and I'll help make the arrangements

Wow! Those look awesome!
Huge thank you to all of you involved in this project!
Sorry we've been so quiet on here lately. We've been very lucky with all the perfect timing and generosity of friends and family that have helped us get the rediculous freight logistics and all the groundwork finished for the shop building. It has taken all our time and attention, but it's paying off now. The good news is that construction has begun. The first bit of framing of the new building is erected.
As Lorien said, winter is coming, but thanks to you all, it looks like we will have a roof over us before the first snow flies!

You rock!

A.

glad to hear the construction is well underway- I'm sure you can't wait till the roof goes up and you can get back to full time smithin'

May the weather hold out....

Bill

Im really impressed by the workmanship of these knives. I was wondering what grit is the finish on these knives. And do you have some close ups of the finish?

What an awesome project ,I love it. I have no knife building skills so I can't help there. But, if along the way the project needs a cash infusion let me know. I'm sure I can help some for such a fine cause.

Schuyler will provide more pics when the knives return to him from Paul Long's shop in Texas.

As for sales of these knives, it's totally up to the maker. My feeling is that auctions are the best way to raise the most cash, but I also don't think it hurts to try and buy the knives directly from each maker when they are posted. For example, if you like Schuyler's set, feel free to drop him or me a line with an offer, (I'm totally willing to be a middle man so as to save Schuyler's time). Paul's leather work is worth $300, so that has to be taken into account.

I have an etching stencil exposing setup and make my own stencils. That is not a problem for me and I'd be happy to expose a sheet for the project.

I also have a suggested "rule". I think it would be nice if a printout of the background story behind the name of each pattern was included in the package. The eventual customer may not get to read the OP but I feel it would be a good thing for them to know the story behind.

Edit: To make things easy I'll volunteer to supply stencils as necessary as well as printed story card(s) for each blade/maker. I just need the artwork, desired sizes, and list of addresses and a deadline.

are you still down for stencil making, Ian?

Sorry everyone... Life has severely gotten in the way of extra shop time. I will finish my blades and get photos up and get them sold I just don't know when that will be!

Did not know this was happening, but if there are still slots to join, i'd love the opportunity to help.

Spencer

Lorien, let me know if you need a backup maker for a set. This is too cool a project not to push through! Good on ya for rallying.

I received an incredibly satisfying email from Schuyler 'Skyman' Lovestrand;

Lorien's design for the large knife lent itself well to a fighter application, so I went that way, as opposed to a flat grind chopper style. The steel is 1095 with a working satin finish. It will patinate rather quickly with normal use and care. Double hollow ground blade with a fully sharpened clip. Both knives have tapered tangs. The handles are black canvas micarta, also with a satin finish. The fighter is 16" overall with a 10 1/2" blade, and the small knife is 8" overall, with a 3 1/4" blade.

Credit goes to Brad Stallworth at Peter's Heat Treating for providing the professional hardening and tempering to RC 59 - 60 for these two blades. Thank you Brad for your participation in this effort.

Of course the professional sheaths are recognizable as the work of sheath maker extraordinaire Paul Long who generously lent his expertise to this project.

If you are interested in purchasing this set of knives by Schuyler, please PM me with an expression of interest. I will accept PMs for this until August 15. Payment will be sent directly to the Desrosiers' paypal account, and once funds have cleared, Schuyler will send the kit directly.

I never got the blade blanks, and thus never made mine. Still willing to do it, though my work schedule (28/28 out of West Africa) may push it into next year.

If you have extra blanks,Please send some to Mr Clark and Mr Straub. I would absolutely love to see what they could do with this. I would be a player on their knives. Just a thought.
