NEW 4.7 Thread

It's a traaaaaaaaaap!!!!

Oh Grog, I love starting my day with a string of unexpected posts from you :D

I'm glad all it was is that tiny admiral. Seeing the first few pics, I was concerned a finger or two would stay in the glove when you took it off!

I know it was silly but that was just too funny. It looked like someone was murdered in my kitchen sink. Glad I oil it regularly so it cleaned up easy.

I was handling a 4.7 Cru that a friend had. I noticed some inconstant jimping on it. The jimping appeared to be slightly inconsistent depth and spacing. Has anyone else noticed this? It was not a factory 2nd.Is this normal or is it a slight flaw from Survive?

I've never noticed anything like that, not that it couldn't happen. My 2nds and Ugly Betty's have all been obsessively well done. Pics?

Is that a steel problem or a coating problem?

Pics would be helpful. I'm sure it's possible something left the shop by accident, but if the seconds are coming out as flawless then this sounds like a mistake.

The price of S!K blades is not a problem. Availability is the problem!

As for imperfect jimping, I'll believe it when I see proof. Until then, I call trolling.

^yup. Sounds a bit spurious especially considering how my UB came.

Wanted to add: That little fleck about a third of the way down is just some schmutz, not an imperfection in the coating.

Really!?! it was a honest question. Give me some time to get a picture uploaded.

Here is the thing. I feel that if you have a problem or question about a product the best thing is to contact the manufacturer before you post pictures and complain in a public forum. I did email them but since it is the weekend i had not received a reply yet. I dont mind one bit about that. I am happy to wait. they have been a great company to deal with and quick to reply to my questions. I have no ill will to them at all. My post here simply wanted to know if the inconsistency is normal and maybe my expectations were unrealistic to have it all perfect.

But since the forum cant believe that there could possibly be something less than perfect from Survive and instead decides i am trolling i will be glad to post up pictures at your request.

Believe me i have no hard feeling toward Survive, this is a minor thing. I was just trying to figure out if it normal or not. The knife feels great in my hand and is razor sharp.

I looked at my paperwork. I cant see anything indicating a 2nd but price was $189 if that helps determine a 2nd or not. I emailed then the order numbers o i ma sure they will know if it was a 2nd. It is not marked a 2nd in any way.

PS ignore the other blade condition, i was cooking with a cheap kitchen knife.

Hi rc51kid. I haven't seen any other reports of inconsistent jimping on firsts. I can't remember at what point S!K went over to the laser engraved 'factory 2nd' but you could pull the scales to make sure. If it's a second that was produced before they went over to the laser etch, it will have a small divot under the scale. The fact that you don't see it designated as a second on the paperwork, though, would seem that it's a first. Certainly things can get past quality control, even S!K's strict control.

Sorry, man. That was not cool of us. SURVIVE! has stepped up their QC from high to ridiculously high, so it was just a surprise to hear your comment and see your pic. I definitely see what you mean and I stand by my earlier post, I feel like it is a rare blemish that just slipped out unnoticed. $189 is indeed full price.

I think you're having a great attitude about the whole thing. Thanks for the pic.

I pulled mine and the jimping looks the same, but mine is an Ugly Betty 4.7 CFV.
To me it looks like the machining of the notches is not completely consistent.
I will say that I could not feel the difference and I had to use a hand lens to see the irregularity.
Interesting information, please keep us posted.
Edit: I just also checked my 5.1 20CV UB and the notches are much more consistent on it.

I dont really care enough about it to pull the scales. I like the knife. I ordered it but it was supposed to go to a friend. He and i are doing lots of swapping around so i think it will stay with me. Honestly that is kind of part of the problem. I dont want to fall in love with it as keeper and have the little things nag at me. So i just figured i would see if this was normal. If Survive has another to swap it out i would probably do something like that. But i do not think i would return it for a refund if that was offered. I like it too much.

For the price you paid and the quality if knife you are getting this is a minor thing
Take it out and use it hard. Safequeens are useless

I previously asserted that my jimps were perfect, but after looking at the photo and rechecking my knife, I need to correct that: I have one slightly shallower jimp right in the middle of the notch sequence. Nifty. Maybe that's the one blem that kicked it back to factory 2nd?

Fortunately, I care not one whit about it.
