Thanks brother. What's the problem with it?

guh :(

So basically, the haft sides are entirely parallel up until the last 3/8 inch, where there's finally a flare outward. And, of course, the parallel width up to that last little bit is smaller than the eye, so even though the top little bit of the eye can get some purchase if I file the haft end enough, the bottom part of the eye will never have anything to grab onto. Perma-rattle is apparently in my future, so I guess I have to shim it up with some tape after all like 1066vik suggested.

I used a chainsaw file and sandpaper to put a smooth chamfer around the top edge of the eye, to make it grip instead of shaving the wood as it slides up.

If there's that much of a gap at the bottom, I'd just buy a new handle. You can find them online for about 4 bucks. Just Google it, you'll find some.

Ok good suggestion, thanks. I'll monkey with some sort of wrap underneath to wedge it in place while I'm waiting for a new handle to arrive.

Hopefully the eye socket's not too big. That would suck.

BRL,

go custom man and make your own handle, ohh or better yet... have your kids whittle you one :D... (i seen your contest pics :thumbup:)

Just looking at the picture, you've got a sharp edge at the top of the eye and it's digging into the handle. It also looks like it's plowing grooves as you slide it up. These things come very rough inside the eye. Unless you smooth it out, it will just keep cutting up handles. It needs to be smooth inside for a good friction fit and no sharp edge at the top. There are some good tutorials floating around about doing it.

Got my Wetterlings large hunter's axe in yesterday. Been without one that size since somebody lifted my old 20" swedish at a campsite a couple of years ago. The wetterlings is pretty nice. Couple coats of linseed oil on the handle and a finish sharpening and I think it will serve just fine. I'm trying to fight off the urge for a Gransfors mini. Since I played with the one Jeff Randall carries at the gathering I keep thinking how handy it would be. Might get a Vaughan sub zero and mod it instead.

Here's my stable, two GB's and two Wetterlings. The Mini is durn handy, and oh-so packable.
I still want a Wildlife Hatchet for some reason. Have almost pulled the trigger several times.

I'm still upset I can't make my username purple.

I think that's right. Gold gets a signature. Platinum gets custom title and signature.

Platinum gets more PMs. For a brief period, between Platinum and Moderator, I was Gold again for a while. The thing I really missed was all that extra PM storage.

PM= Pimp Moose.

Just sayin'. :D

I can't take it. I'm ordering a mini. I don't know how I've made it this long without one..

Nice stable by the way. Needs a wildlife hatchet though.
